Climate Control and Heated/Cooled Seat Operation during a Remote Start
postdateicon.pngJanuary 14, 2014

The following systems on the 2014 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 may operate during a remote vehicle start:

• Climate controls
• Rear window defogger
• Heated seats
• Cooled seats
• Heated steering wheel

Climate Control (HVAC) Settings

During a remote start, the HVAC settings will operate at the previous HVAC settings when the vehicle was last turned off. If the owner desires a certain HVAC setting during a remote start, the HVAC mode, blower and temperature should be set prior to turning off the truck.

Rear Window Defogger

During a remote start, the rear window defogger will turn on if the outside temperature is 44° F (7° C) or below. It will stay on for 10 minutes when the key is turned to Run/On. The rear window defogger indicator will not be illuminated until the key is turned to Run/On.

Heated Seats

During a remote start, the heated seats will turn on (if enabled) to the high setting when the ambient temperature is below 50° F (10° C). They will turn off when the key is turned to Run/On. The heated seat indicators will not be illuminated when the heated seats are on during a remote start. To enable the heated seats to operate during a remote start, go to the Vehicle Settings menu. (Fig. 16)

Cooled Seats

During a remote start, the cooled seats will turn on (if enabled) to the high setting when the ambient temperature is above 80° F (27° C). They will turn off when the key is turned to Run/On. The cooled seat indicators will not be illuminated when the cooled seats are on during a remote start. To enable the cooled seats to operate during a remote start, go to the Vehicle Settings menu.

Heated Steering Wheel

During a remote start the heated steering wheel does not turn on.

Lets the comments begin... :lurk:

Regional Customer Service rep had Dealership call me to bring the truck in so they could check the heated seats with remote start function. Well, they said it is working properly and heating but at a reduced level (kinda pre-heating). Not sure how they tested it, Seats are ice cold when I get in on those cold morning :(. Even after running for two 10 min remote cycles. I felt the seat with my hand and the drivers side seat feels that same temp as the back seat - cold.

Just indicates to me that they do not have a fix for it, and not really that interested in pursuing one.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... if the customer can't even tell if they are working (without putting a towel over the seat), then they AREN'T working! Are you listening GM???

My 2011 had warm seats... my 2009 Z06 had warm seats.... this prepackaged response from the dealers is a joke.

The last time I remote started my truck it was about 10 degrees. It ran for about 10 minutes before I got out. The seats weren't as hot as they would normally be if the truck was running and I had them on the HIGH setting, but they were not as cold as the back seats without the seat heaters.

So it works in my truck....

I have a 2014 LTZ with the same issue. My dealer has already replaced one seat bottom heater.....but says there is nothing wrong. My 2007 worked perfectly. C'mon GM you guys are better than this.

I bought my truck a week ago today. It was 18 degrees this morning and I noticed after nearly 10 minutes, my seats were cool to the touch. No heat present at all. I have the correct settings selected to heat or cool with remote starting. After reading this thread, I realized mine are not adequately working either, so I called my dealership today. I spoke to Jeff at Vestal GMC in Kernersville, NC. I'm hoping the information he provided with help you guys out that are having the same issue. He told me the seats after 10 minutes should be noticeably warm to the touch. He said if they are not, he needs to "Flash" the computer program that controls the heated seats under the remote starting feature again. He said other 2014 trucks have had a computer glitch that reprogramming this module will resolve. It's covered under warranty and takes about 15 minutes.

I plan on taking mine in next Monday for the spray in liner and the DuPont interior/exterior protection done. He said he would take care of it then. I will let you know next week if I can tell the difference and feel the heat. Colder temps are in the forecast for next week.

Hope this info helps.

Doesn't GM usually use the term "if equipped" when mentioning an option that may or may not be present?

Could the usage of the term "enabled" means that those with problems simply have vehicles that GM improperly programmed? Not saying they do... just thinking of possible reasons for the heating issues.

I just copied the words from the post above mine and commented to see what people would say since it states the seats would come on at a high setting. It seems this is an incorrect statement in an official GM posting since mine barely heat just like everyone else here. Unless they have changed it on the newer trucks being made now.

There is absolutely a problem with remote start feature climate control and heated seats on the 2014 GMC Sierra's. Mine is a 2014 GMC Crew Cab SLT Z71 4x4 heated and cooled seats nav etc etc. The heated seats do come on when you remote start but are at such a VERY LOW level that it barely does anything at all and the climate control does not defrost the windshield as it should. I traded in a 2009 GMC Sierra SLT and the remote start kicked butt on it. Everything would be on properly (defrost etc) and the heated seats were a beautiful thing. The 2014 trucks have taken a step backwards with there remote start system! I called my dealer today and they have had a LOT of complaints. I assume that GM has a plan to reprogram the system to make it work better? I understand that there is a control module so it probably has some software that they can adjust maybe. Maybe one of the GM reps can chime in here and let us know what the plans are? I find the issue to be unacceptable on a 50k plus truck.

redwnjr do you have a 2014? I think the 2007 through 2013 all had great remote start heated seats and climate control. SOMETHING IS DIFFERENT ON THE 2014's and yes I do have the heated seat option with remote start selected.

Lee Downey Thanks so much for the information. I have a 2014 GMC Sierra SLT (less than a week old) with heated and cooled seats that is really annoying me with cold seats on remote start (9f here this morning) they seem to just BARELY heat at all. I am going to push my dealership to check into this. Did your guy mention a certain bulletin or TSB or anything that I might need to mention so that my service guy can access the information quickly??? My 2009 Sierra had a kick arse remote start heated seat feature and I hate to think that my 2014 50k plus truck is not at least as good LOL

I have a 2014 Denali black on black with the 6.2 motor. I have checked the correct setting for the remote start heated seats. My heated seats do not work at all with the remote start. I asked the dealer to check them on my first service. They said they were working fine. However, I did noticed that the rear defrost was on. It gave me an idea. When I remoted started the truck this morning (9 degrees this morning) I took my multi meter and back probed the heated seat wire. It was not hot. If the heated seat doesn't have power it not working. I will point this out to the dealer on the next service to see what they say.
