Vibration in Front End

I have 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 Navada Edition 4.8L with 55500 km. In the summer I was getting around 19 MPG, now I getting between 12-14 MPG. 2 months ago I started feeling a slight drag in the front end, and sometimes when I turn right the left front tire would chirp around the corner. When I'm on the highway it feels like I am constantly driving into a headwind. Lately I can feel a vibrating buzz at 40 km/h. I am stuck, I've had it into the dealership 5 times in the last 6 weeks, 4 licensed mechanics have taken it for a test drive. Nothing. I thought it was a bearing in the front diff so yesterday I got then to change the front diff fluid expecting to find metal shards on the plug, Nothing. (There goes $80) At first I thought it was the breaks, can't seem to find anything wrong with them.

Well Im dealing with almost the same thing, But mine made a whining noise also. Took to the dealer and ended up being a pionion bearing as they got deaper into the diff the metal got into the case and trashed the ring and pinion gears. Should be getting my truck back today. 2012 Silverado CC 4x4 6.2L

I only have a 2wd, but when I hear humming I instantly think hub bearing. The chirping has me baffled thoug because normally you would find that when you have a broken sway bar link.

Was there metal shaving stuck to the plug? What made them go ahead and tear it apart

Well they had to tear it done to do the bearing I guess and thats when they looked it all over and found the rest of the issue. Still havent gotten it back due to parts got delayed in the back weather. So hoping to get it back somtime soon

Thanks for the feed back. I have done a little bit of searching, when a pinion bearing goes u can see fluid on the diff where the drive shaft connects. I think, can someone please confirm? If pinion goes, will u find metal shavings on the diff drain plug? Thanks

Hold on a sec. The only thing they found in the rear diff was a bad pinion seal. WTF My fuel mileage is only getting worse. I think I'm around 9 - 10 MPG. Now that it's cold, u can really feel the vibration. The guys at the dealership are starting to get mad at me, I've had it in there 8 times in 3 months. They keep tilling me there is nothing with my truck. Whatever it is they don't want to fix it.

At this point I'd be taking it to another dealer or calling GM. 10MPG is absolutely insane for them to be telling you nothing wrong. Your dealer just doesn't want to take the time to diagnose the issue apparently.

I don't think it's in the drivetrain anymore. I've got 58000 km. My warranty runs out at 60000 km. On Oct 25/13 after driving 100 km I could feel a sudden lack of power, and a slight vibration, witch I can still feel today. Since then I have been getting between 11-14 MPG, it feels like I'm constantly driving into a headwind, the exhaust smells rich and it idles funny. I took it to a different dealship last week, they changed my alcohol content from 17% to 3% and what a difference. The vibration was still there but I had almost all the hourspower back, but that only lasted for a day. Any ideas?

With a vibration and lack of power it seems like you are drivetrain related now vs something like a ball joint or control arm. I would take it right back as you need to document the problems before the warranty expires AND make sure that GM doesn't place you in the "fixed" category.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
