Clay barring is like sanding your paint. Do it too often and you will ruin your paint. Professional detailer will tell you (if he's not trying to sell you a detail job) the only time you need to claybar is if you have alot of tar, sap, or other build up on your paint. It was actually invented to remove paint overspray....

Clay barring is like sanding your paint. Do it too often and you will ruin your paint. Professional detailer will tell you (if he's not trying to sell you a detail job) the only time you need to claybar is if you have alot of tar, sap, or other build up on your paint. It was actually invented to remove paint overspray....

^^^lol!! Claying is NOT like sanding your paint. It removes contaminates bonded to the paint. It doesn't remove clear coat, like wet sanding or buffing would do. It does not hurt anything. Just do a google search. I've been doing it for years. Claying twice a year is recommended.

yes and no. if you are claying way too often not using a detailing spray while doing it, as well and not working the clay and using fresh clay as you go along you can absolutly marr the crap out of your paint. As you say it pulls you contaminants and if all you are doing is dragging these around that is bad.

like anything it takes some practice to do well and most people would be best off to buy a junk door panel from a yard and take it from a 20 year old dull crappy paint to having it shine and smooth before touching a $50,000 truck if it like your first new car ever. maybe others have had many and done more auto stuff growing up like me or you but most have not.

Detailing is way too much work... lol... but I agree claying is just a non intrusive cleaning process. Clean clay is key though... don't just reuse tge contaminated crap over and damage tge paint... then you are sanding. It does work well and I have done it myself... nowdays I will just pay someone to do it lol. I had an entire car covered in overspray and clay ed it back to decency again.

I would have to disagree and say that clay baring requires zero practice. It's stupid easy. Either one of two things happen. First, you're using enough liquid and it glides like butter. Or your not using enough liquid and it sticks like mud unlike you lube and get the clay back together.

^^lol. Using toilet paper is easy, yet some people screw that up with disastrous results. It's harmless and super easy to do. Watch a YouTube video first and you'll be a pro.
