"Service Trailer brake" Warning in DIC

My truck does this off on as well. Dealer says no codes 

so nothing done.

I had this happen a month or so ago for the first time. It was right after a very hard driving rain. I found that the gasket on the cover doesn't fully seal out rain. I dried everything  out with a heat gun and brushed silicone grease on the terminals. So far so good. I put some of that grease on the gasket as well.

GM makes the biggest POS anymore. A little about me: I’m 41, born and raised in Idaho, now live in Seattle. Been towing, working, driving trucks since I was 10! So a) I’m old enough to know what trucks used to be like, and b) not a city slicker that doesn’t know how to use one. I USE my truck EVERY SINGLE DAY. I purchased my truck off the show room floor with 12 miles on it. It has been the biggest POS I’ve ever owned. There’s ALWAYS a problem with it. To which the dealership will happily inspect for $200 (that’s $200 per item). I have a $400 diagnostic machine and can do that crap myself. The battery lasted 13 months, the injectors lasted the first 2 years, and I CONSTANTLY get the trailer brake control module error msg; which 99% doesn’t mean anything. Despite what they may say on here. I’ve replaced the control module TWICE myself, and it’ll come back. Again, I’ve been towing trailers for nearly 30 years. I’ve wired trailer brakes onto 8 trucks over the years myself. NOW GM believes their customers are too stupid to tow anything. Today, yes today, I received a service engine report that there’s an emissions system problem, that I need to have serviced within 1 DAY! The funny thing is, I also received a message from my wife, which read: “Sell that f’n pile of crap and NEVER buy another GM product”. I think my wife’s msg has more relevancy than the money sucking trucks GM make. I WILL NEVER, EVER purchase another GM vehicle, and neither will my 5 brother and father who’ve seen what GM makes now!

I understand where you're at, I'm ready for a change myself. Toyota's looking good. Argh

Hey KJS, I haven’t installed one on my truck (‘15 Silverado), as I’m afraid of what error message I’ll receive if I do. I own and tow 3 different types of trailers (12’ dump trailer, 20’ equipment trailer, & 16’ enclosed trailer), so I’ve trouble shot the “service tow module” issue over and over again. Also used 4 flat, 7 way RV plug, you name it to see if it changes anything. My error message goes off for 1-3 days every 3 weeks or so. It serves as a reminder to not buy another GM product.

I just put in my new brake controller and it's still doing the same thing. Next I guess I will check how clean my connections are. When we removed the module everything looked beautiful clean, maybe I'm missing something else. 1 bulletins I saw said check the brake fluid to make sure it's topped off I printed that off from another site I am going to try it. If I have any luck I will certainly post what I accomplished. Maybe I'll be posting pictures of my new Toyota or Nissan or other vehicle LOL. This really sucks because my replacement price of my vehicle for 2018 is $75,000. That's money GM will not be getting for me next time around.

Well as stated above I replace my trailer controller and appeared to have the same problem with the service trailer message coming up. Then after a day or two I realized I took the fuse out the 30 amp fuse to see if that would stop the message from coming on. I put the fuse back in, ( my error) with the new controller on and I made sure my brake fluid was topped off, everything is functioning as it should.

I've had the service trailer brakes message a few times.  It was always a result of dirty connections so far in my experience.  A helpful warning.  I understand others are likely having more in-depth problems though.

Mine has done it a few times. Squeeze the 2 tabs it quits. Takes about 2 seconds.

its dirty connections at the two modules above the spare tire and/or that plug into the receptacle that you plug your trailer wiring harness into. Take the spare tire out, find the black module closest to the drivers side. Remove the 10mm bolts holding it in and then unplug, clean connection. Apply dielectric grease and plug back in. There is a second module above the first one. Remove it and clean, re-grease the connector for it as well. If this does not work then it is the dash mounted controller which is AC Delco part number 15926102 for $23.79 on Amazon.

Post above yours is the true way to fix it.

Mine does it, mostly when its wet and cold out so its probably dirty connections.

 

I was wondering if there is a fuse for this? I never towed a trailer with a braking system nor will i ever so this is useless to me. If i could disable it with a fuse i would love that!
