Remove OEM Badges?

Took ours off with dental floss. Then got the goo off with turtle wax adhesive remover.

Well, looks like I have a new project. I need to get some fishing line and adhesive remover tomorrow.

Well, crap. I went and got the 3M adhesive remover and took the bowtie off. It was on there good. I removed the emblem using the floss/fishing line method and then removed the residue with my thumb and the 3M cleaner.

After I was done, the clear coat under the emblem is orange peeled. At first I thought the 3M stuff did it but then I realized that I had it sprayed outside the edges of the bowtie and the orange peel effect leaves a perfect outline of the emblem and only under the emblem.

So now my options are to drive a truck with a ghost orange peel bowtie on the tailgate, see if the local body shop can buff it out of the clear coat, or buy another bowtie to cover the horrible paint job back up.

I really like the debadged tailgates. I started on mine the other night and a couple minutes into it I was second guessing my decision. Talk about a pain in the butt. I was using dental floss and a hair drier and in a little over an hour I only got off the Sierra badge. The leftover tape is on there good to say the least. I didn't want to risk burning the paint with one of the eraser wheels. So just patience and a gas soaked rag is all I used. I will get the GMC badge next.

My Technique was fishing line and my thumb, and a plastic credit card to force some of the 3m tape off. The tiny amount of glue that was leftover I got off with 3m adhesive remover - it had some alcohol in it. The only badge I hard trouble with was the GMC on the tailgate, the rest peeled right off.

Do not use any adhesive remover until you are down to the slightest but of tape/glue. You will regret it believe me, it softens the tape and glue and makes it near impossible to peel or push off

I had a similar thing happen when I did mine, I believe it is caused from the heat created forcing the line back and forth. I used a bit of polishing compound on that area and then used some carnuba hard wax and it went away. Hope that helps

Off to a slow start on my bowtie Plastidip

I planned on plasti Dipping my tailgate bowtie today got all my "chores" done so i could take my time. I had everything masked off shaking my trusty can of Plasti Dip throughout. I closed the garage door to block the wind and am ready to go I take the top off the can and NO nozzle.Hmmmm So I have unmasked my bowtie (not driving to the store with masking on my tailgate) to exchange my can and.... get another roll of tape. I guess its a lesson learned.

It's Not Hiding It's Removing The Logos. We Do It Because Most Of Us Like The Clean LooK.
