Article about slow 2014 Silverado/Sierra sales

Like I've said in before, I'm sure the trucks are functionally great but they just aren't very attractive. The design is polarizing. You either really like the new look or you hate it. For me its not horrible looking, its just not nice enough for me to upgrade from my 2010. Espescially if its going to cost me $25K to trade. It only cost me $9K to trade my 2007 up to a 2010 but now I really have to like it to want to spend about $12,000 more to trade for a 2014.

Guys relax, the first yr the 6.2 came out in the silverados 09 they were only available with the LTZ trim. In 2010 they offered them in the LT trim.

Ok ok I concede complain about it not being available in a reg cab now :)

Also, GM has devised certain marketing tricks to force people to buy a fully loaded LTZ trim if they desire the 6.2 liter engine. This engine was available with LT or even lower trim before. To give you some perspective on price increases, few years ago I stumbled upon a new 2010 GMC Sierra extended cab, 2 WD, LT trim with the 6.2 liter non-AFM engine, 3.73 gears, 6 speed automatic, and the max tow package. With my $2,500 GM card rebate and all available to me incentives and rebates, I could have bought that truck for $ 26k and some change. Compare that to what you have to pay for a similar 6.2 liter engine truck today.

2014 Chevy Impala marketing scheme is even worse. First time in history, they put a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder engine in Impala as the standard engine in the low end LS trim. This trim level came standard with the 3.6 liter V6 engine in 2013. Now, the same 3.6 liter engine is optional and cannot be had with the LS trim, so you must go to the LT trim to get it and now a car so equipped is about $ 4k more than the base LS car with the 4 cylinder engine. Of course, even the base 4 cylinder car is now priced much higher than the V6 2013 LS model was.

I use these examples because I own both a Silverado and Impala. Both are a few years old now and to upgrade to new ones is simply too expensive with these devious marketing schemes. To replace my $ 31,100 original sticker price '09 Impala LTZ , which I bought for $ 21k even with all incentives and my 2,400 GM card rebate, would cost me now about $ 35k ($ 39k sticker) with meager incentives offered on that car. And to get into a new 2014 Silverado equipped like my truck I am looking at at least $ 42k.($48k sticker) My Silverado and Impala are worth maybe $ 16k and $ 10k, respectively on trade. So to upgrade them to comparably equipped 2014 vehicles, I am looking at $ 51k difference plus 6% tax which is over $ 54k!

Considering that I have not got any pay raise in the last four years, I consider these kinds of price increases absolutely unfounded, given the state of the economy today.

The issue with your comparison on the Impala is that even the base model 2014 is a much, much better car than even the top trim 2013. Engine advantage aside, the old Impala was reliable and could be had for cheap but it was in no way competitive with anything sold today. It looked the same as the Impala that came out in 2005.

The basic chassis architecture on the 9th gen (2000-2013) Impala/ (2014-15) Impala Limited dates back to 1988 W body GM midsizers. These are being sold along side the new 10th gen Impala only to fleet, rental and police agencies. The Impala Limited will be available until 2016.

Not that I want to see GM do poorly but I only hope they're desperate when it comes time for me to get my new truck next year.

I agree.

I hope there's some really good incentives in the next few months since I plan on getting one in the not too distant future.

In what way is my '09 Impala LTZ "not even competitive" with a base model 2014 Impala? Mine has a 3.9 liter V6, the base 2014 has a 2.5 liter inline 4. I have heated leather seats, sunroof, power passenger seat, homelink transmitter, Bose stereo, sport tuned suspension with high speed tires (same as Impala SS). A base 2014 Impala LS has none of these things. It has a bit more refined chassis but with that 4 cylinder engine it is a ho-hum appliance car.

I drove dozens and dozens of Impalas over the years as rentals of every trim. From a bare bones LS to an SS surprisingly. The 3.5 and 3.9 can trace their roots to the 3.8 which in turn dates to like the 60s. It's an old, inefficient design as evidenced by the 3.6 which makes like 60 more HP. As for suspension and tires, whatever, the only newer W body to get any attention to those was the GXP Grand Prix, the other V8s and lesser trims were all run of the mill. And I'm sure the base model Impala has at least a power driver seat and sunroof option. At for leather, meaningless since GM doesn't use real leather aside from the high line stuff. But none of that matters. What matters is the crap interior. The fact that GM sold any of those in 2013 to anyone but fleet owners or people who just don't care is a miracle. No USB input, no nav, nothing. They run forever, are good on gas but that's where it ends. The new Impala looks great, has an interior that is modern and a chassis that isn't older than I am.

sounds about right. dodge has 10k rebates off msrp right now... on the website with no haggling or anything.

i've been watching the gm canada site for more incentives since i'm thinking about trading up, but only 3500 off msrp? the only way to get a bit more off sticker is to haggle with them for trucks on the lots. I have yet to see one with the options i want. i don't want to 'settle' spending that amount of cash, you should get what you want.

if they want to increase sales, offer more competitive pricing up front. If i could get 10k off sticker on a custom build like ram offers, i would order tomorrow and trade up. but until that happens i'll be driving my 12 for now...

$4250 off, plus the more truck promotion that gives another $1600 off if it has option code PDU or $1000 off if it doesn't, and then truck loyalty, you get $1000 for a 0% deal or $2000 for a cash deal.

That totals $7850 off and you still get the 2 year 40K oil change program. Rebates are good. I'll sell you one, I'm a GM dealer lol

GM, especially Chevy, is just being too conservative. Their marketing and advertising sucks cow balls, and they're afraid to take bold steps with their bread and butter trucks. The SUVs look like they may be a tad better than the trucks, but GM needs to think more outside the box. Ram has the best fuel economy and added the diesel. Ford's marketing is awesome and they're not going to give up the top spot easily. What did GM do that makes people take notice and remember them? Nothing, they went conservative, took baby steps, and made sure to not create any wake.

The only thing outstanding about the GM twins is the 6.2L and you can't even get it on most models. WTF? Grow a pair GM. Offer some good special edition trucks and put the 6.2L in more trucks. Ford has the off-road market cornered with the Raptor, but the sport truck market is really weak. Offer the 6.2L with 3.73L gears, lowered suspension, every cab, 22" rims, color matched everything, put some SS badges on it and watch the people come. Do the same with the 4.3L or 5.3L in the Colorado.

Then make even mild attempts at an off-road edition and small diesel and watch people come. Like somebody said, they might not sell lot, but it'll get people thinking more about GM and get them into dealerships.

Ram only boasts best fuel economy in their 2wd reg cab XFE truck that has the charger's v6 car engine. Every other model gets a truck engine and then doesn't win the best fuel economy rating. That's like if GM put a bicycle crank in 1 truck for advertising, then it would get excellent mileage lol

Down in Texas, check on line, before the real haggling starts 4door Texas package goes from the high 30S to mid 40s. These trucks are loaded pretty good. I got one 12/31/13 out the door for 32xxx. I think they are good looking fun to drive trucks. Drove them all, sure they can all ways make them better, for my money these are the best.

So? They're still the champ. GM did the same thing a few years back with an XFE model. And don't forget the new Ram diesel that gets 28mpg on the highway. What's GM's response to that?

GM curently barely has the most fuel efficient V8, but Ford EB sales show that people aren't concered with cylinders, just HP. GM needs to step their game up in some way to win customers.

Consider popcorn sales at the movies. A small popcorn is $2.50 and the Large is $6.75, which one are you going to buy? More than likely you are going to buy the small. Now add in the option of a medium at $5.50? What is your choice now? Offer a free refill on your coke if you buy the large popcorn? Which one are you going to buy? How many go back for the free re-fill? How much more margin does this generate? The goal is to sell more larges, the medium and free re-fill are only their to drive to to buy the more expensive item. GM is doing such with the current model plan. There is more markup and margin on the 2LZ LTZ.....

Incorrect. The 3500 and 3900 engines are Chevrolet 60 degree pushrod V6's that trace their roots to the 2.8 litre engine introduced in the craptastic Citation in the spring of 1979. The 3800 V6 was designed by Buick in the early 60's, and shares absolutely nothing with the Chevrolet V6's.

honeslty i havent been impressed with the new 1500s. everyone iv seen looks like crap. there are not many high countries on the road probably because of the price tag. havent seen hardly any z's. the wheels look atrocious on every model but the high country. and yall are right. dont put the 6.2 in the highest package.

A 1.3 liter 3 cylinder Kubota tractor diesel?

    • Diesel $5.42 at the truck stop on the hi-way
    • I'm not sure if this should be a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - AC Delco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles, 119k total miles.  When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so I did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out, it could've been the wrong fluid. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material, scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance. I had a panic stop prior to this issue which may have contributed from what I read. And on the first attempt to bleed and hydraulic test the scanner listed things to look for and one was any gaps between the pad and rotors which I did notice on the RF corner and I removed the outer pad (where the gap was) cleaned it and the hardware and didn't see a gap after that but will re-check it. I read that if pushing the caliper pistons back then you're supposed to open the bleeder so as to not push fluid backwards into the abs module or it will damage it. If that's true then that's also a possibility from the previous owner having the brakes changed before I got it. I'm using an XTool ip500 scanner. Any suggestions, questions and comments welcome.
    • Next Friday will be my 6 week point from my right knee replacement.  The surgeon says it will be fine if I choose to drive after this checkup.  I know I could drive now but best to do as my surgeon (and my wife) tell me.  Richard compared being 62 to 72.  I remember when I was in my early 60's I was experiencing slow but regular decline in my mobility.  Thanks to good medical support,  i continued to fight the speed and spread of this decline. During my 60's I worked on non-surgical methods and just when I turned 70, my orthopedic surgeon recommended joint replacements.  In a little over a year, I had one shoulder and both knees replaced.  This hasn't been a terribly fun experience, but worth the discomfort as my future mobility health trajectory has reversed.  It is a treat to now be watching my mobility. balance and confidence steadily improve!
