Handgun Advice

For HD, I'd go with a 12GA pump, especially if you're not going to practice practice practice to become proficient.

Another thing to consider:

When your life is in danger, will you have time to unlock the storage unit, take out, and load the gun before you or your loved ones are dead?

Agreed.. A gun for home defense is useless unless it's easily accessible IMO

.40 is a great mid caliber .....XD is a great gun....

Mid caliber?

The .40 S&W is probably the snappiest "common caliber" there is and is very unconfortable for many people to shoot. That's why you see many police departments getting rid of the .40 and going with either 9mm or .45ACP because they are softer shooting. The high pressure of the .40 round is just too much for many people to handle comfortably and that affects accuracy and follow up shots. Mostly all departments that switched over to 9mm or .45 have seen higher qualification scores tha nthey did whe nusing the .40S&W.

I prefer the 930 spx for my home defense 12 gauge (no risk of short stroking and easy to keep full). I also have the xd 45 tactical with 185 gr +p ammo... Closest I could get to 10mm performance without buying a 10. Be careful about ported barrels or anything that hangs off the pistol (grip lasers)...

I agree. Although I love my XDm I wish I would have gone with either 45 or 9mm. My gun lifts the barrel up and my sisters 45 is super smooth and her boyfriends 9 mm it feels like nothing is there. Next pistol for me will be a 45

I stuck with 9mm for ease of finding ammo. And now im reloading so its even easier to keep ammo around.

My XDS .45ACP is one of the softest shooting pistols that I own. For a little lightweight pistol, it's impressive how smooth it runs. It's very comparable in recoil to my heavier 1911's. Springfield really did their homework when it came to the balance of the pistol. Hard to tell the difference between my XDs and my wife's XDs9. They feel almost identical when shooting. Just a little stronger push- back from the .45.

My sisters boyfriend got her a Kimber 1911 .45ACP for Christmas. I love how it fills my hand up and how it shoots. That's what I want next lol

The xds45 is one of my favorite guns, it's so easy to be accurate with then but I personally think the best 45 is the HK45c... I also might like it because I'm a lefty (not politically) and the HK45's are ambidextrous!

I highly recommend a double action revolver. Before all you auto guys start throwing tomatoes and eggs, think about the issue and the fact that you want your wife to be able to use this device as well.

Hey I like autos as much as the next guy. I'm a particularly big fan of 1911 guns. But you had better be proficient as possible with that design. Frankly, I no longer am. I haven't fired a handgun in a few years and haven't shot one more than 25 -30 rounds in the past 10 years. My wife has shot less than that, although she does have handgun shooting experience.

The reality is that we don't stay proficient and if we are so unfortunate enough to be in a life threatening situation, and if we can get to our firearm, we will be pumped full of adrenaline and, likely, in fear of your life like you've never been before.

Double action revolvers are stored in one of two conditions: Loaded or unloaded.

Firing a loaded double action revolver is purely instinctive and no preparatory actions are required.

Trying to remember safety positions, "did I leave it with a round chambered?", keep your (wife's) second hand out of the way of the slide (so you don't malfunction mainly), are all contributing factors toward a less reliable outcome. And outcome is all that matters. Nobody will give a crap if your wife used a sexy, cool gun to shoot an intruder bent on your demise. You won't either.

Your gun is a defensive weapon. You aren't assaulting "the Wolf's Lair". A 19 round magazine of armor penetrating, mach 3 projectiles is not going to be required.

Here's a good read
