Hard vs. Soft Tonneau Cover

Trying to justify one over the other. Needed maybe once a month for cargo protection while traveling only, with no valuables left in bed overnight.

 

I'm thinking soft (extang trifecta) would suit me well with ease of removal and no permanent rail system mounted to the bed.

 

My main concern is vandals or thieves with soft cover. Most vulnerable places would be hotel or hospital parking lots overnight.

 

How often do you think this occurs with guys having soft covers slashed for spite or curious thieves cutting them open for a look around the bed?

 

Also, did some of you think you would use the cover sparingly only to like it well enough to just leave it on all the time?

I would not worry about what might happen and concern yourself with the definite.

 

The soft can be easily rolled out of the way if needed but the hard cover is not so easy (if at all). Nothing worse then buying a large package only to run home first to remove the hard cover.

This is why I have a hard, folding model. I leave it on all of the time, it folds to where I can use the entire bed if needed and more secure than soft.

I'd get one of the tonno pro hard covers if your budget is tight. I really like my undercover flex. To me soft covers are only good for keeping stuff dry it adds no security level.

I can't justify the cost of a hard cover. I've had three soft cover, one was a trip fold and the others a roll up. So far no issues with anyone bothering the covers. I just installed a truxedo duece on my new Silverado. The GM trifold has a hard liner under the toneau material. Looks like a nice cover.

My ONLY concern is damage to the soft cover.

 

Maybe I should check to see if damage occurs, can another vinyl cover be bought for the frame and at what cost.

 

Just hate to spend an extra roughly $400 for a hard cover that will only be used maybe 20-30 days a year. Plus having to have rails and drain tubes mounted in the bed.

I can't see doing a soft cover... I had one on my old S10 and I remember putting armor all or some other type of vinyl protectant on it and just hating the fact that it runs down your paint when it rains. It's just my personal opinion but I'm sure if you ask the guys with soft covers they may agree with me.

Why even consider buying a soft cover? Look into a retractable I have a pace edwards switchblade that works well for me. Here is an interesting video to consider.

you have to put rails on with any cover anyways...otherwise how does it attach to the bed, besides a snap cover

Afraid it wouldn't hold up well with a 4wheeler bumper strapped against it going down rough roads.

 

May have to spend the extra money on a removable hard cover for peace of mind and to avoid second guessing a soft cover purchase.

 

I guess an extra $400 isn't too bad if you say it fast.

Look at the folding covers, the removable under cover classic is pretty easy to break into with a simple crow bar. The undercover flex seems to be a little more theft deterrent than some of the BAK covers plus it has a 3 yr warranty. Locally here you can get one for around $800 out the door. If you have basic hand tools you can save the $30-50 dealers want to install it.

I have had Truxedo LoPro's for nearly 10 years. Lifetime warranty and excellent quality.

 

Yes....they keep honest people out of the bed, but then again, I have seen many hard covers tore up as people break into the beds of trucks.

 

The Truxedo is light weight, rolls completely out of the way and I never take it off.

 

If you are concerned at certain locations, and there is nothing in the bed anyway, roll it up and leave the bed open.

 

BTW the a truxedo was half the cost of the hard folding covers.
