Caught my truck bed on fire, liner is junk now, help!

Another reason to quit smoking...

Someone threw a butt out the window and it landed in my bed as I was going down the interstate. It ignited some old garage door operator boxes and blazed up to my rack where it caught the stuff up there on fire too. Ruined a lot of tools, including the handle on my welder, etc.

What's really got my stumped though is how to get the liner off now...it's ruined, but it's also hardened or something now because of the fire. I need to get this junk off because I'm going to get a new liner and need a new rack. Tried chiseling at it with a paint scrapper and I swear it's laughing at me. I wish I had some pictures because it's gross, but I'm probably the only person alive without a camera phone.

Also looking at getting a Dualliner this time since it's cheaper than having the respray --- http://www.dualliner.com/shoppingcart/DualLiner-Bed-Liner-Chevy-Silverado-1500-1500HD-2500HD-3500-1999-to-2007-CLASSIC-Long-8-foot-Bed.html

Do you guys think I could just put it on top of the damaged spray-on?

You cant get it off without grinding it off. Honestly your best bet would be go back to the place that applied it and see if they could possibly grind melted spots and respray over it to touch up..

If not, go to the junk yard and get a new box. Are you putting in a claim to your insurance? I would imagine a new rack and respray will not be cheap.. But ins going up might be worse.. tough call

I'm not claiming it with insurance. The deductible is too high, they won't cover the tools and whatnot, or the rack I don't think. The structure of the truck held up pretty good through fortunately.

Well I am glad you only destroyed your own stuff. I have had inconsiderate smokers throw their still lit butts out and catch my convertible seat on fire. I have also seen the destruction they cause when they catch the brush on the side of the road on fire and burn down acres of forest and people's homes in the way. I never understood throwing out lit butts. When I smoked I kept that crap to myself.

Often, you can get bed take offs, I watch on Craigslist.. I want a bed that matches the truck I have for a trailer. They have been as cheap as $800 for complete brand new bed with tailgate and lights. I would have that one if I had the money when it was available.

Well don't I feel like an ass. I read the title where it says you destroyed it then missed the word someone in the beginning. So some jackass caught it on fire with their lit cigarette. Happened to me in a convertible years ago.

OK I just reread the origional notification I got. HE DID THROW IT OUT. So I am not the ass, he is. Here is the quote

"Another reason to quit smoking...

So dont jump all over me. Then he went and changed it hoping nobody would notice. Well I have the origional post in my email, and he did throw it out himself, so he got what he deserved. Just glad nobody lost a home or a convertible becuase of it.

I have it set up to send new topics in this forum and when I got the very first message that a new topic was posted it had "I" and not "someone". So yes it was edited. When I replied I didn't even read what was edited I just replied to what I had read in my email.
