Yep, I am going to have to take my truck in for this repair. I take it will take 2-3 days to complete. Add paint repair to the insider driver's door that bubbled up and is exposing the primer. Guess I will be driving a rental for about a week. The sad thing is that I have to drive 160 miles to get this repaired. The good news is that I will be in a city where the repairs can be done for a couple of weeks. The scary part is that they have to remove the bed and other parts in order to make this repair.

Edit: the strange thing is, I haven't been able to find this same info about the 2014 Sierra. On GM's media site I could only find it on the Silverado.

Well took my truck in today

Dealer just pealed some of the flake off and spray painted some of the rust.

Not very happy!!!

What can I do now??!!

I just traded my perfectly good 2013 Avalanche for this exact reason. Every time I changed the oil and looked at the undercarrige I got sick to my stomach. Not just the frame but EVERYTHING under there looked like it was 75 years old. I saw the results of the "fix" on other trucks, it was a mess.

They did the same thing to me. I'm just living with it at this point. I don't have time to keep fighting with the dealer over it and taking my truck back in for service. I'll probably end up trading this truck before it becomes a problem but rest assured GM, I will strongly be looking at other manufacturers.

My 2007 did not have an issue with this so sometime between 2007 and 2013 there was a production change in the quality of the wax coating process.

 

Does anyone think this issue from the factory may have stopped after certain build dates?

 

Not really unless you want to pinpoint a year between 2007 and 2013 where basically every truck, Suburban, and Tahoe after that date will have rust issues like this. Unfortunately this just seems to be the new standard of quality on these trucks. It's not just GM though look under an F150 when you get a chance...they have just as much rust in some cases but they paint their frames, not coat them in wax.

 

In my opinion this is something to keep a close eye on going forward with ALL make and model trucks, not just GM.

Is this an actual recall or whatever in Canada?

 

Some trucks have the wax falling off in sheets and there's a recall of sorts for these trucks. However, all of them from what I've seen will exhibit early signs of rust over previous generations of these trucks.

    • Howdy folks,   Recently I pulled a heated steering wheel and clock spring out of a 2015 Sierra All Terrain (part numbers coming soon - will have to disassemble), and just installed it on my 2016 Sierra WT (as base model as it gets).   On install, I noticed that I’m missing the connector often tucked behind the dash for the heating element.     No problem… or so I thought.   I used an “Add-A-Fuse” at my heated steering wheel fuse location, which has voltage, but no wires. I ran it to the positive of the heated steering wheel (Violet/White), and took black to ground.   Hooked up the battery, turned the truck on - no heated steering wheel. No button backlights. Was pleased to see that my cruise control was working though.   Read a post suggesting reversing polarity, so I gave it a shot. Violet and White to ground, Black to power.    Aha! Heat! But I seemingly can’t turn it off AND still no backlights on any of the buttons.    Checked all fuses, everything is still in good order. I’m stumped.   Does anyone have any insight? If so, please share!
    • I'm about 1800 miles into my last oil change, and yesterday a message appeared saying oil life was at 77%. Not sure why it popped up but I think all of these electronics could be susceptible to solar flares or somesuch. I change my oil right at 3K each time, and that was the first time in 10870 miles that message came up. Strange thing is that it showed on the screen at all since I don't drive with that sort of info displayed on the DIC.

    • Checked the pads today and there's plenty of meat on them. If the message keeps coming up, I'll just answer YES that the pads were replaced and wait for the squeal.
