Question for Double-Cab Owners

I almost bought a double-cab. I ended up with the crew cab just because of the extra room in the back.

My question is... How do you use the extra space in the "back seat" area? Is it for tools, kids, groceries, people hauling?

If my only need was to haul my grandkids around, the double would have been fine, but for full size adults, pretty snug! (I mostly haul people rather than stuff...)

Have only hauled a few adults on short distances. No complaints but you do have to move the front seats up a tad for a lil bit more room depending on the adults size. It's not bad. I would have loved a CC but the extra dough was not worth it for me as it's mainly just me and sometimes my lady riding front. I flip the seat up often for groceries or supplies and what not. I love it though!

Put me in the same boat. I traded my 2003 Crew Cab for a 2014 1500 Double Cab. Yes, the Crew has more room, I seldom have adults back there, usually shorter trips. I also didn't want to go less than the 6' 6" bed, and fit in the garage comfortably. If this doesn't work out longer term I'll go back to a Crew Cab. I also dropped from a 2500 series to the 1500, heaviest trailer is just over 3300 lbs.

I bought the Double Cab for most of the same reasons others have stated.. My youngest graduated from 6 years of college a year ago, so I am an empty nester. No grandkids yet, or in the near future. Neither of my kids , 27 and 24 are even married yet, but they are working on that.

I had an extended cab for my last truck, and wish this Double Cab configuration would have been on that for the front hinged doors. I use it mostly for hunting, and only need enough space to keep my gear inside, dry and secure. There has only been 2 times over the 8 months that I have owned it where someone has rode in the back. With the front seats positioned correctly there is enough room to ride comfortably for a few hours. Might not be as comfortable for a cross country trip, but nobody complained yet, and I asked them to tell me the truth about the ride.

The Double cab gives me the 6.5' box, which allows me to park in the garage without a shoehorn, like the Crew Cab would with the same box. My son has a 2012 Crew Cab with the 5'8" box on it. No kids, but a girlfriend and 2 dogs. He wished the 6.5' box would have been available 2 years ago, as his quad has to be shoehorned into his box.

I really didn't need the Crew Cab, and am completely happy with my Double Cab. The only negative I have found is I tried to fit a tall skinny dresser in the back, and the "B" Pillar was just not going to let it happen. Had it been a crew, or old extended cab, it would not have been a problem, but I can live with that as it fit in the extra room in the box.

Stuff and the very occasional passenger in the back (twice since Sept.) for short trips.

I needed 6.5 bed, crew with 6.5 wont fit in my garage lol

That too for me

I have a 2011 but it's the same story for me- having multiple passengers is not common, I mostly wanted inside storage space. Also cost and the fact crews aren't made in America played into it.

I have been grateful for the 6.5" box more often than wishing for the extra 10" of space in the back seat. An adult rode in the back seat for 600 miles one day and had no complaints at all. The double cab looks better, costs $3000 less, and is made in the USA.

My sons 2012 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab was assembled in Flint, MI. The 2013 Crews and 2014 Crews are were assembled in Silao, Mexico.

My Double Cab and the Regular cabs are assembled in Roanoke, IN (Ft Wayne Assembly).

It is my understanding that the 2015 3/4 and Tons are assembled in Flint still? II haven't looked at the stickers yet, even though I seen a bunch at the dealer a few weeks back

I haul both people and stuff on the regular. My buddy that's 6ft hasn't complained yet but I do slide my seat forward a touch. I did ask if he was comfortable back there and said it was very comfy.

When I've climbed in back, it's the getting in and out that's alittle tight IMO. That's where the old suicide doors came in handy. Other than that PITA... I like the new 4 door configuration.

Anyone know which has better relative resale value - is one more desirable than the other?

I traded my 2011 extended for the 2014 double cab. I'm not sure how some of you sit. If the front seats are all the way back, of course it's a tight fit, but what's the need for it so far back? I'm 5'11 and don't see the need to slide fully back. When I do have passengers in the back seats I just move my seat a little more forward, hell it gives me better posture which in turn makes the heated seat feel real nice hah!

It was cheaper, better looking to me. I wish they would have left it as an extended cab.

Was thinking somewhat the same. Add the pillar for the crash testing stuff but keep the 170 degree(or what ever they were) suicide doors. They could have tucked the exterior handle for that away as well. Additionally, it would have been something no other mfg offered...

It really is based upon what you looking for and even what your life style is. I was personally satisfied with the room of the double cab, off the top of my head I believe the difference between a 14 double cab and 99-13 crew cab is only about 2" in leg room. $3,000 was mentioned before for price difference but I distinctly remember the difference between a 4WD 2LT Double Cab and Crew Cab was about $4,000-$6000 for a 5ft box and I believe dealers were selling the 6.6' box around $46,000-$48,000 (I'm sure that varies by location) which is about $6k-$10k more. Fully loaded LTZ Crew Cabs 6.6' box were running about $55,000+ here. Even now the high country with 5' box is $54k.

Anyways.. On high mileage trips I usually have my truck loaded with people and all the luggage in the bed, I never heard any complaints about being able to stretch out and relax in the back. The only thing that I would say could have been slightly larger is the amount of space between the corner of the seat and the cab pillar. Everyone usually has to pivot themselves to get out, otherwise smacking their knee on the pillar. It would probably be good to note that if you are planning on taking any of the kiddos around that require a car seat, it's well near impossible to manage that in the double cab. I found that the seats need to be forward to an uncomfortable distance, and even then it's still tight for the car seat.

Overall, I am very happy I went with the double cab. The look is more appealing to my eyes and it meets my demands in terms of cab room. It was hard for me to justify spending $4,000-$6,000 more for just cab space when I was getting my double cab for just south of $38. Passengers love opening their own door without someone else needing to open the front one first.

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    • No one will care for you like you care for you. Do what you can for as long as you can. IMHO of course.
    • How about them NICKS!!!
    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
