seat belt dinger

Recommended Posts

There is a super simple way to disable the seat belt warning chime on the new 2014 sierra/silverado. Just forward of the seat belt latch between the console and seat there is a connection where the wire comes out of the seat, if you feel around its easy to find. The release is on the bottom side of connection. Disconnect both driver and passenger and the lights go out and no more annoying reminder.

This will also likely make the airbag system think you're buckled in and thus fire the airbags at full power in a crash. If you're unbelted in that instance, the airbags could really mess you up. Do stuff like this at your own risk.

I just put the belt buckle on. I have read too many horror stories of people getting thrown from the vehicle in a wreck...

Interesting. I find that buckling the seatbelt works just as well and requires no modifications...

When I'm at races or driving my trash to my street. I don't need a seat belt and hate the warning. I do however want it to work, just be nice if it started after say 15 MPH. I only have a 5 acre yard and have issue with this what do farms think about?

I drive a lot in the woods... idle speed..and don't want to buckle up. That ding sound is a PITA. In these situations... I just use one of the plastic dummy buckles you buy on ebay for a few bucks..

This.

In for updates if someone can weigh in on whether doing this has any impact on airbags, etc.

It's pretty clear GM didn't have one single "non-city-boy" in the group that made some of these choices. Pull through a gate at 2 MPH and it locks your passenger out.... Dealers in rural areas must be getting an earful from farmers and ranchers.

You all realize that Gm has federal NTHSA mandates they have to follow in regards to safety equipment, right?

As said, if you bypass the seat belts system you also may be bypassing the seat weight sensor that determines if to fire the airbags at full or reduced power, I would hate for you to forget and a child be in the front seat and get hurt of killed because of a minute annoyance of a seat belt chime.

Most of the issues being complained about are not NHTSA mandates--which is why we complain (other vehicles can be had without/more easily shut off, etc). I'm not especially worried about the airbag malfunctioning while driving across a pasture (head-on with a mean cow?).

Buckle the seat belt across the vacant seat when you're road hunting or farming. That pretty well assures all system design features are intact if some small person uses the belt in a normal manner later. Im no rocket scientist, but that seemed like the obvious solution when I want to disable the chime temporarily.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to be clear, I am an ASE and NATEF certified master technician. Although the airbag system is correlated with the seat belts, to my knowledge the two stage airbag is solely affected by the speed of a collision and not by the drivers or occupants seat belt status. Doing this mod does not disable the passenger seat weight sensor, the airbag will still function.
