I know this is the wrong area but it covers a couple topics so i wanted to post where everyone can see. My local trans repair man said that in order to check the magnet on my 02 4L60e you have to drop the trans. He also said that the in person tune by blackbear was not good for the life of my clutch packs and can toast my clutches. He also hinted towards not adding a servo. I understand that the PCM does not shift hard through gears because soccer moms will complain about the harsh shifting, so the line pressure allows slippage. Why would increasing the line pressure with a BB tune and servo damage the clutch packs if it reduces the slippage from the factory. I would like a servo with 123K. Blackbear said the tune would not cause damage to my 60e but if they tuned it to shift "firmer" under everyday driving than why would they do that if it hurts my clutches? Justin said that the increase in line pressure will save my packs but why does my trans guy beg to differ? I do believe justin is the best tuner, the truck drives so much better and performs better than expected, it just flies now, The reason i post this is because last april i had justin tune me in schaumburg IL and he will be back this month so im called my trans shop (guy owns a z71 sub too) and he said no pretty much to a vette servo, LARGER PAN, and fluid/filter, and i wanted to add a servo/fluid before i set my BB in person tune date

I don't have a clue about transmissions. I don't know if a tune will hurt your tranny or not, but this still seems pretty simple to me. You requested a service from your local transmission shop. The request wasn't illegal or immoral. Said shop "said no" to providing the requested service. Find a new shop. Problem solved.

I would find a new shop.

If a vette servo is gonna hurt the trans - how come trannys aren't fallin out of vettes left and right (just sayin).

If your guy won't even install a larger pan, change the filter and add fluid - I would go elsewhere.

He said that the servos are okay for vettes because the corvette has different clutch packs. Is this true?

From what I can tell the weak link is the 3-4 clutch pack. They are failing due to low line pressure and the resultant slippage.

The vette servo mostly firms up the 1-2 shift.

I don't see how reducing slippage at the clutch packs will hurt the trans - unless you are running around 800 horsepower or more (you wouldn't run at stock trans anyway).

I would seek another opinion.

I didn't really think the vette servo would be worth it, I'm really happy with the way the pickup drives now. But if you want it tell them fo and have someone else do it... Should take half an hour.

Like I posted before my old 700r4 in my 85 diesel 'burb got the guts pounded from it and slammed into gear ALL the time and I took it apart to steel 3-4 clutches out of it and was still brand new inside with 2XX ,K km on it

I say nothin wrong with a firm shift , a sluggish nice drivability shit is not good IMO

Reducing the slippage - they claim wears down the clutches. I agree with you

I don't know why your trans guy is putting up such a fuss.

If he is right and the mods destroy the trans - then he gets to build you another one. He wins either way.

I just installed the corvette servo into my trans last night. I'm at 131k miles, LOVE IT!!!! It drives so much better. I'd still like the 3-4 shift to be a little more crisp but the 1-2-3 shifts are AMAZING!!! Unless you don't like quick, snappy shifts, your trans guy needs to get a new job. Heck do the work yourself and save the money. I did the servo in about an hour (including test drive) and the pan drop doesn't take very long either as I did that a little over a month ago. We have lots of threads about doing both jobs and youtube and what not have some really good videos too.

The magnet is inside the pan and is not accessible without dropping the pan. It's centered around the indentation/dimple in the pan. It will be covered in material too so don't let that alarm you.

If you're wanting to know the condition of your trans, one way to find out is to send off a fluid sample and have it tested. You'll be told what all goodies are suspended in the fluid. Magnet really means nothing. As mike said, it'll be covered with stuff no matter what. Now if you dropped your pan and found the whole pan coated with a layer material....... not good.
