Question about cold start High Idle

Every vehicle I recall owning, when started in the winter, would idle a little high till it had ran for 30-60 seconds. It would usually idle around 1200 to 1400 rpms and slow down after a brief time period. My 2013 did this and the first 2014 idled up also. I have noticed that my new 2014 does not idle at an increased rpm when cold. I had noticed mine not increasing the idle since I bought it so i assumed as it got colder it would idle up.This morning it was 17 degrees, I got in it and started it after I got in and it immediately went to 750 rpm and stayed there. I'm not complaining, just curious.

I'm wondering if this is something new to save gas or is mine in need of some update? Anybody else notice this also?

Mine idles high every single time I start on a cold engine. Usually for about 20-30 seconds; then it drops down to the normal idle rpm.

Probably because with direct injection it can be kept running smoothly without any more increase in rpm.

 

Idle rpm probably also adjusts in response to electrical and accessory loads.

It is the "norm" for the these engines to idle at a higher rpm for a certain amount of time.

 

You can also set it manually. It's in the manual.

Mine always idles high when cold. Maybe try unhooking the battery to reset the computer. If that doesn't help then maybe it's possible that something isn't right. I don't know what tells the computer to raise the RPM's at idle when cold but maybe some sensor isn't right and telling the computer an incorrect temp.

It's been 12 hours since I started the truck. I went and started it again and made a video. Here is what is does when cold.

I also noticed when completely warmed up it idles at about 500 rpm.

Looks normal, if anything I bet the tach is slightly off.

My 2015 idles high for a bit when cold too, not sure why your truck doesn't.

From what I understand the high idle is to warm up the engine or more specifically the pistons. The pistons expand to their nominal size as they heat up. Driving immediately after turning the engine over, especially on a very cold day will allow greater blow-by and oil contamination.

 

Mine idles high for about 30 to 60 seconds based on temperature.

I guess I better check at the dealer and see what I can find out. Man I hate going in for something petty, especially when the selling dealer is 80 miles away. I might go to local dealer and ask questions. I assume I would have to leave the truck overnight so they can check it cold.

Good question, I'm curious now. Mine idles high most of the time upon start up

Just pretend it's a 1972 model and still has an automatic choke.

On cold outside temperature-cold starts, mine idles high, slightly above 1000rpm for about 30 seconds or so. Then around 750 for a while. Then once its warmed up back down to normal.

Actually the high idle is more for warming up the emissions componants than anything else.

Mine does exactly this too. Normal being about 500rpms.
