Flapper valve and resonator removal

I have a 5.3L and was wondering if removing the flapper valve and rear resonator would allow my truck to actually sound like a v8 truck and not so much like a hybrid lol.

I'm not a fan of loud exhausts and I am not wanting to change out the oem exhaust. On my previous avalanche I removed the rear resonator and it gave a nice rumble to the truck and that is all im hoping to achieve.

Sorry if this has been asked, I tried searching the topic but could not get a definite answer.

thanks

Doesn't make much of a change at all except the V4 mode is more pronounced (bad) and the tone is a bit higher, not necessarily louder. All and all, not good. Just remove the muffler. You'll like it, throaty, not loud.

I had everything from the muffler on back removed and had a Flowmaster Super 44 added. Nice and loud, but being that it doesn't have the flapper valve it does have the V4 drone. It doesn't really bother me because it sounds like an 18 wheeler's engine brake (which I love the sound of actually). If it ever gets on my nerves I'm sure I could just add a couple (one behind each outlet of the muffler since it's dual out). Not sure if that would effect anything, but to really work I've read that the valve has to be behind the muffler. I just really wanted duals and the big resonator looks awful in the fender well so I can live with the V4 drove. If you want to keep single outlet then just replace the stock muffler and remove the resonator if you want to. Keeping the valve is what's important to not have the V4 drone.

So to achieve what i want, it seems as though i just need to remove the muffler. Excuse my stupidity but is the muffler not important on the truck? Im more of a wiring guy rather then mechanical

Search YouTube for "2014 Silverado muffler delete". You will find lot's of videos.

I cut my muffler off too be honest it's not much louder. Sounds nice on start up and wot but just driving it sounds stock. I left the resonator and flapper valve.

Well look at the name. Mufflers just muffle the sound so it's not so loud. removing it wouldn't throw codes. States (not sure about all, but I would think it's all) just require them in regular inspections for that reason I would think. I think what you might be thinking about is the catalytic converters which is required and will throw codes if removed. These new trucks have a 3rd cat that from what I've read is just hollow because they're all just Cali compliant. I left my 3rd one but I may have it removed. The only bad thing that it will make the exhaust look like it was hacked together from pieces like my old 98 was and I don't want it like that. Maybe if I ever get headers I'll get the 3rd one removed, but until then I'm not worried about it. Being hollow I don't think it really effects performance or sound.

By the way, I did hate that the truck stock sounds like a damn Prius and I've always had loud trucks so it was killing me. My OCD also screwed with the fact it had just 1 tailpipe lol. I was worried that the truck wouldn't have been that loud because I heard about the new trucks still not getting loud. But mine is loud as hell without having the annoying sound so it's perfect for me. At idle I can easily hear it while it sits on the street in front of my house while I'm on the backside of the house or even at the back alley. So I can only imagine how loud it is from the outside when I get on it. Again I had everything from the muffler on back removed. I'm not sure how much the resonator quiets the engine while idling or driving. But with what you're talking about, just replace the muffler with a mild muffler. Any good shop that does exhaust could do it for cheep and would know what options would fit you. As said above, just go on youtube and search videos so you have some idea.

I wish my 2014 sounded like my 2007 did stock. Not loud but throaty at idle and a decent sound under hard acceleration. It appears the only difference in the exhaust between the 2014 and the 2007 is the added flapper valve and resonator. Im inclined to think deleting these 2 from the mix would achieve that 2007 stock sound. Or rather the historical GM truck throaty exhaust sound.

I did the muffler delete, gave more sound but you can here the V4 if you don't have a tune. In town just put your truck in M5 no V4, when you get over 60 MPH click up to M6 its not to bad after 60.

When I removed my muffler I moved the flapper and resonator to the original muffler location, added a Y, and ran duals out the back. No V4 drone. Seriously, none. Actually sounds good in V4. Not sure what did it, but I'm thinking the resonator & flapper combo did it.

I have a 2015 silverado, I'm thinking about doing the flowmaster dual kit. The kit I got doesn't have a flapper valve. Will this cause a check engine light to come on.

    • Hello All!   My 2019 Colorado 3.6 LT, 4WD Crew Cab has approximately 77,500 miles and I recently began experiencing the well-known transmission shudder between about 30 and 65 mph. The problem had worsened to the point that I could no longer attribute it to road conditions - and I had decided to bring the truck to the dealer - when recently, I experienced a sudden loss of power while driving at maybe 40 MPH. Several warning lights flashed, the “Check Stabilitrack” message appeared, and the Check Engine, Stabilitrack, and Traction Control icons remained illuminated. The truck regained driving power, but it stayed in a low gear with unusually high RPMs for the speed. (limp mode?) Because I was only about two miles from home, driving slowly, I was able to make it back and run an OBD-II scan, which showed fault codes U0101, P0700, and U0100. My next trip in the truck was to drive it to the dealer the following day. That trip began normally, but after about a mile I experienced another loss of power, along with the same warning lights and the same “Check Stabilitrack” message. As before the truck remained driveable, but again operated at an abnormally high RPM-to-speed ratio and seemed stuck in a single gear. About a mile later, the dashboard lit up once more, this time displaying “Check 4WD.” Soon after that, I arrived at the dealer. I have verified that the truck still has its original factory transmission fluid, which means it has never received the corrective fluid exchange outlined in GM Technical Service Bulletin #18-NA-355.  That was Thursday of last week and I've heard nothing yet from the dealer.    According to Technical Service Bulletin #18-NA-355 and the build date of my truck, my truck should have the newer LV fluid. I've done a little research and read something about a problem with the wiring harness as well.   Anyone have an insights into this situation?  Thank you!!

    • Did you even read this article?   Even the title of the article says "U.S.-Iran Deal Doesn’t Mean a Swift Return of Oil and Gas Flows"   Remember, crude oil prices are based on FUTURE purchases by the oil companies.  Gas prices are based on FUTURE purchases by the station.  This article stated that many of the oil producing nations have to restart their processes to get the oil produced.  Then the oil has to be shipped to wherever.  And it doesn't get there overnight.  And most of that oil is not coming here. Check out this site:  https://afdc.energy.gov/data/10621   A graph will pop up to show where the US imports their oil from.  Notice that there isn't a lot of import from OPEC and Iraq.  Most of the US import comes from Canada. The US oil produces are selling their oil on the open market, which is why the US fuel costs went up.  So you're correct, the US oil companies are going to slow walk the price downward.
