Do I have to wait until oil life is down to zero before I can get my o

My 2014 Silverado just hit 5,000 miles and I still have oil life but do I have to wait until life percentage goes to zero? I was told I get two free oil changes a year and as little as I drive I want to just space out the two oil changes between the miles I drive my truck..

You do not have to wait. You can get the oil changed prior to 0%. Your manual will tell the maximum amount of time between oil changes, such as at least once a year or so. With my previous '06 I would change it anywhere from 25% down to 0%, just depended on when it was convenient to get it changed. My current truck I will just go mileage since I don't have a percentage to go by anymore. It'll be every 5k miles or so. Keeps it on track with the wife's Jeep since we drive about equal miles per year.

My dealer says when its below 30% i can get my free oil changes done. Which so far has been about 5500-6000 mile intervals.

My first included oil change was when the truck had only about 2.2k miles. Probably 60-70% oil life left.

GM dealers can only suggest that you follow the OLM. If you wish to have it changed at 3000, 4000, 5000 miles, GM states that those requests may be honored and you get your free service. Still, just the 4 free ones. GM wants dealers to suggest to customers to follow the OLM.

That's what it's there for! A lot of science, testing and math went into the OLM and they trust it. I trust it too.

5000 miles on the original oil?

I have done 3 oil changes on my Camaro and I am only at 4500 miles :)

My dealer had paperwork that I had to sign for the free maintenance deal that the OLM had to be below 15 or 20%.

Did not matter as I changed it at 1,000 miles on my own then again at 6,000 & will follow up at 11,000 with full synthetic.

The oil used for the included oil change is a Dexos synthetic blend 0W-20.

That's what im going to do, as soon as it hits 3k

Ok. Thanks folks. Also I should be able to take truck into a local dealer instead of where I bought truck for the oil change correct? They are both gm dealers

You get 4 free oil changes to use within 24 months and 24,000 miles. They do not have to be done at any certion interval or oil life percentage per GM. So doing the math, and under "normal" driving I would get it done just under 6000 miles or just under 6 months.
