How to Change Your Oil...Women:1. Pull up to Jiffy Lube 3000 miles after the last oil change.2. Drink a cup of coffee.3. Fifteen minutes later, write a check and leave with a properly maintained vehicle.
Men:1. Go to O'Reilly auto parts and write a check for 50 dollars for oil, filter, kitty litter, hand cleaner and scented tree.2. Discover that the used oil container is full. Instead of taking it back to O'Reilly to recycle, dump in hole in back yard.3. Open a beer and drink it.4. Jack car up. Spend 30 minutes looking for jack stands.5. Find jack stands under kid's pedal car.6. In frustration, open another beer and drink it.7. Place drain pan under engine.8. Look for 13mm box end wrench.9. Give up and use crescent wrench.10. Unscrew drain plug.11. Drop drain plug in pan of hot oil; get hot oil on hand in the process.12. Clean up.13. Have another beer while oil is draining.14. Look for oil filter wrench.15. Give up; poke oil filter with Phillips head screwdriver and twist it off.16. Beer.17. Buddy shows up. Finish case with him. Finish oil change tomorrow.18. Next day, drag pan full of old oil out from underneath car, dump in hole in back yard.19. Throw kitty litter on oil spilled during steps 11, 15, & 18.20. Beer. No, drank it all yesterday.21. Walk to 7-11 and buy beer.22. Install new oil filter making sure to apply thin coat of clean oil to gasket first.23. Dump first quart of fresh oil into engine.24. Remember drain plug from step 11.25. Hurry to find drain plug in drain pan. Pan is empty. Find drain plug in back yard hole.26. Hurry to replace drain plug as last drop of fresh oil drains onto floor.27. Slip with wrench and bang knuckles on frame.28. Bang head on bumper in reaction.29. Begin cussing fit.30. Throw wrench.31. Cuss for additional 10 minutes because wrench hit Miss December (1982).32. Clean up. Apply Band-Aid to knuckle.33. Beer.34. Beer.35. Dump in additional 4 quarts of oil.36. Beer.37. Lower car from jack stands.38. Accidentally crush one of the jack stands.39. Move car back to apply more kitty litter to fresh oil spilled during step 26.40. Drive car a quart low for 7000 miles when it'll be time for another oil change.

I am going to use my 4 oil changes up, after that I do all my own maintenance and repairs. Important to me is using a good brand of full synthetic oil and a reputable oil filter such as Wix. Stock drain plug here. You probably know but make sure to fill your filter with oil prior to putting it on.

I've been doing my own for 30 years.... I've never heard of filling the filter with oil first. What's the reason? Thanks!

Some people just do it... idk why. I put oil on the rubber just a old habit. I'm pretty sure once u put the new oil in. It will get to the filter. But what fo i kno... i know a lot of people that do do that. Can't hurt anything

I do my own oil changes 'cause I know it will be done right, i.e., using a clean funnel, priming the oil filter, ect.

I've always rubbed the o-ring, but I never filled it... good to know.

GOLD PLUG magnetic plug. Replace the aluminum washer every other use. Purolator PureOne filter. 0-20 M1 Extended Performance oil. I prime the oil filter also. Torque drain plug with a click type torque wrench to 20 Lb/Ft. Hand tighten filter to pretty much as hand tight as possible.

I'll be changing my own once I get beyond the four free ones. It doesn't take that long and I can use whatever oil and filter I want. Plus, can sample the oil to send it in for analysis if I want. I don't put on a lot of miles, so it's every six months for me. I've always filed the filter. I'm sure it makes no difference, but I figure the less time that the engine is running without oil, the better. Purely anecdotal and not based on scientific testing though.

I always used to change my own but, this new sierra has the first four free, I'm getting my last one today, my wife drives a mazda and they always seem to have a $39 special at the dealer for synthetic oil and tire rotation, I think I can buy the supplies for like $30, it's not worth the $10 to me I just have the dealer do it. I guess we will see what specials the local GM dealers have, there is a Chevy & GMC dealer right up the street from me, if I can get a similar deal as I've been on the Mazda the dealer will continue to do my service but, they take damn near an hour to do an oil change, I can do it in half that time so, we will see.

I have always done my own oil changes but on my current two daily drivers I have 4 free oil changes so it's hard to justify! Once those are used up I'll go back to doing it myself.

 

I use the factory drainplugs. I have looked a Fumoto over the years but have never pulled the trigger on buying one.
