GMC headlight recall concern

Dropped into my servicing GMC dealer today with a copy of the TSB, discussed it with the service manager and my truck is now scheduled for the headlamp bulb upgrade + BCM flash + re-aiming next Wends. No problem.

It helps to print the TSB and take it with you. Here is a link to it;

Had the PIT5374 Headlamp Performance (BCM Calibration and Vosla Bulb) upgrade done at my servicing GMC dealership today. I supplied the bulbs (ordered direct from Volsa in Germany) and the dealer did the swap, BCM flash and re-aiming at N/Chg.. From what I can tell this is going to make a big improvement (was still daylight when I drove home this afternoon), but won't really know until I drive it at night. I choose to order the bulbs directly ($67 for the pair) and not wanting to wait given the limited availability of them through GM parts.

Will have mine done tomorrow at a Chevrolet dealership.

I just got back from a dealer service, they just got the bulbs today and replaced them in my truck. Tech told me to check it out and let them know if there are any problems. I will know tonight if they work better, but from the photos I have seen I should be pleased.

Mine was booked for yesterday (with my block heater install) but dealer tells me bulbs are backordered , he saw some 11,000 orders in system (Canada) , I will wait now until next free oil change .

It is NOT A RECALL.

Yes you have to tell the dealer you are having problems with low light visibility with your Sierra. In most cases they will have no idea about this TSB and will have to look it up. If they do know, they will most likely have lights on order and you will have to make a return visit. I got lucky as my dealer knew of this and I was able to have them checked out during a service visit and they had just received a the lights.

I own a perfomance shop and do HIDs and LEDs all the time, however, I have been hesitant to put ANYTHING in this truck because of all the issues people have been reporting. I heard about the BCM flash and headlight bulb upgrade for the Sierra and I jumped at it even though the dealer said there wasnt any difference in his 2015.

I live pretty much in the woods so ANYTHING helps but WOW there is a PRETTY big difference in my 2014. Before, my lights were so dim, the light barely dispersed past the fog light beams and i NEEDED my foglights on to help see. NOW with the flash and new bulbs its an impressive diffrence.

I would say a 30%+ increase in not only light dispersal but also the RANGE and how far it goes efficiently now.

I highly recomned at LEAST all 2014 Sierras to get this done. I might do the HIDs soon

Fairly much my opinion as well. Re-aiming the lamps help considerably as well. I spent about an hour driving on farm market roads adjusting, readjusting. Be this as it may, however, this improvement basically gives us standard illumination. But, it made an incredible difference over the sub-par and dangerous lighting we had before.

FWIW & my 2₵'s,

For those who don't want to wait on the GM backorder, the specific German made Bi-Halogen lamps can be purchased direct from VOSLA for 57 Euros (about $67) for the pair delivered to your US address. VOSLA also offers numerous other bulbs that provide the +30% brighter performance for both European and US market automobiles.

Of course many may quote that the wholesale price per lamp from GM is about $14 ea. vs. ordering direct from Vosla - but that does little good it you can't find them.

Also, as OP#1 (Bob) advised, be aware the GM part number 23342527 alone does not guarantee it will be the Vosla German made lamps which is good information to be aware of and to further verify with your servicing dealer before they do the swap (i.e. that they in fact have or will be using the correct German made Vosla replacement lamps).

Click on the link below and run a search for Vosla item # 28432

After having the TSB done on my '15 (build date of 6/2015), I can honestly say I noticed little, if any difference in headlight performance.

Found the following info about the Phillips bulb that were originally in the truck and appears the specs are very similar to the Vosla bulbs that were put in, explaining why no noticeable difference.

When I spoke to the dealer rep after driving the truck a few times afterwards, he agreed that I wouldn't notice a difference as my truck had the BCM upgrade from the factory and the bulbs were similar, but the service adviser just praised how the upgrade was "night & day" different-which probably is the case for those that needed the BCM & lamp change.

Now I'm in search of what to do to improve the headlamp lighting since it seems the TSB was basically for nothing in my situation.

I had an early build 15, and when the upgrade was done it was significantly better. (but nowhere near as good as the 16 LED's)

Production may have gone back to phillips as soon as they were able to supply the revised bulb in production quantities.

(they wouldn't pull the production contact if phillips was supplying what they had been contracted to supply)

They may have even have changed production to a revised phillips bulb immediately, but supplied the volsa to service only so service wouldn't get confused having 2 phillips versions.

Is there a recall on the bad headlights of a 2014 GMC Series yet? And is there a cost to bring it in to a dealer ship on the service bulletin PIT5374 they have out?

No recall.

No cost to you for them to apply the service bulletin.

It is an improvement; in fact I get high beamed by road ragers a fair amount, especially other full size trucks. But people have said the upgraded bulbs wear out quickly, and are expensive to replace. That said, I've had them on since the fall, and they're still going strong.
