Installed 2014 sierra auto release tailgate

Looks like you got the idea from the tundra forums? Any details on where you spliced in and how you control it?

Im not sure whats on the tundra forums but i have put this mod on all my trucks that i have owned.

I attached the door actuators to my compustar alarm/starter. This is easier to do with an aftermarket unit bc there is a dedicated negative trigger from the brain i.e. Aux 1 or 2, trunk release, etc. You have to convert the negative trigger to a strong positive pulse to move the actuators. This can be done by wiring two standard 5 pin relays.

This mod can be done with the factory keyfobs as well. Instead of a aftermarket alarm/starter, you need to install either a PAC Tr7 or Axxess Trigger. You can program these modules to only activate on a dedicated amount of door unlock pulses, which can be found at the bcm under the steering column. If you program the trigger to 5 unlock pulses, it will then send a signal to the relays to move the actuators

Another thought.. does it open on its own when it pops? If not, I wonder if there would be a way to "nudge" the tailgate with something to make it completely open on its own.

This is useful when your hands are full!

Closing it would be a nice luxury, but normally when you're closing the tailgate your hands are empty now, so your hands are free.

Only auto close I could think of would be some kind of gear on one side of the tailgate and a motor inside the truck bed.

I have a bakflip tonneau cover on my truck and the taigate pops open fine right now. If i find that it doesnt want to open i have a 25lb door popper that can give it the lil extra nudge that it will need.

Auto close on a tailgate is feasible but the install is ugly as heck. It requires a big linear actuator that has the ability to push and pull.

Just finished the auto release tailgate mod. Materials required are:

2 standard aftermarket door actuators

2 5pin relays

Primary wire to run from the back to the aftermarket alarm/starter

What is the trigger for the actuators? the alarm will trigger it?

Maybe a motor that winging a sling/rope system is more elegant?

I gotta figure out how to wire it to a switch in the cab and use the factory fob and this would be awesome!

I used a negative output trigger from my compustar unit to activate the actuators
