The new Ford 2015 Pickup has it problems

According to the automaker, an upper l-shaft may have been riveted improperly on these trucks, which can cause it to separate. If that happens, drivers may lose steering control without warning. Yikes.

Any maker of a new body style will have its bugs to be worked out. I'm curious to see what the sales will look like when their 2014s are all gone though

Was on a business trip / vacation last week. Bumped into a guy at a local restaurant near St. Louis that had a F150 Ecoboost pickup and was the sales / finance manager of a local Ford dealership. Since I wasn't interested in a Ford, as I was standing next to my 2015 2500HD while talking with him, I asked a lot of questions regarding problems and such with those pickups, and the discussions on forums like this. He stated they had not seen any appreciable numbers of problems that centered around the Ecoboost motor in it. They did have a guy bring one in with problems, but it was found out he was doing things with it beyond the design parameters of the motor and the pickup.

 

But that is only one guy and one dealership. As with any early production runs of new designs, there are going to be issues crop up here and there.

Yeah because a sales guy is going to know anything on the service side and even if he did he sure wouldn't say.

Salespeople are just that, sales. They may be a little familiar with the vehicles on the lot but that does not necessarily mean they are aware of any issues a certain vehicle may have. Their goal is to sell, not discourage customers and push them away by talking about potential problems you may have with that vehicle.

the sales people are given training on the vehicle specs and the options and features. they know just enough to be able to sell the vehicle in the showroom. the ONLY way a sales person would know about any issues is if they owned the vehicle in question themselves.

There are old ford sales training videos on YouTube that support my claim. And YouTube user Rivlanta has LOTS of Buick Training videos for both Sales AND Service!

Just because the training is offered doesn't mean it sticks. I've seen the stuff he's talking about- its online based, just basic info but if you get a turd for a sales person that won't matter.

Most dealerships do not want their sales staff to know technical data. Key phrases highlighting features or packages that may apply to a certain vehicle, but not much more. Interviewed years ago at a new car dealership & they were very explicit in that they wanted you to make friends quickly. Address any concerns via sales mgr. & get the customers headed to the finance office. Tech details, problems etc are for the service dept.

 

While I am sure there are unique scenarios, most salesmen I have spoken to followed the above of making friends with a ignorance is bliss mentality.

It really depends on the person. When I was a salesman for a short time one of the first things they say is that you have to adjust to the type of person that the customer is. Yes you try to make friends so they're more comfortable, but that also means that if you're dealing with a car but you'll need to know mechanical and technical stuff to keep them on your side. If you sale someone a vehicle and they have a problem then you're the first person they will call and come to. If it's something simple or something that someone mechanically inclined will know then you will make it much easier for them if they don't' even have to go to service. Some people will ask what things are while others might know the answers and will test the salesman. Of course not all salesman know cars like this and sometimes they have to go to service, but it helps if the salesman knows about cars.

I have no direct experience with any the Ford stuff, not since a 1979 Ford Bronco I owned, which was a great product. I do know several folks around me that have gotten one of the new Ford 150's that have the Ecoboost motor in them and they really like 'em. And these are rural folks who expect a lot from their pickups. If it weren't for forum banter about the Ecoboost, I would have never thought they were any more of a problem than any other motor. I will admit, most of the F-150's in my area are the V8's, but there are lot of the Ecoboosts also. I haven't heard a lot of negative about them. Could be a fluke.

I am able to directly compare to my brother's 14' F150 EB. He struggles to break 15-16mpg in it, while I am able to get 21-22 mpg on the same stretch in my 6.2. My company leases F150s by the dozen, with the 5.0s and they are better than the EB for mileage (about 18-21), though they are somewhat doggish on the acceleration and make a lot of noise doing so.

I agree, based on that observation, the mpg is pretty lame. On another note, though, it isn't as bad as it appears. The Ford OEM fuel recommendation is regular. The GM 6.2 recommendation is premium. Based on the cost for regular in my area, $2.49, cost per mile for his is around 15.5 cents a mile. Based on your mpg and the cost for premium in my area, $3.19, your cost is 14.5 cents a mile. It is a better feeling to only use mpg numbers, but the commercial trucker in me likes to look beyond the numbers and see what my cost per mile is. My 2015 2500 6.0L averages around 17 highway and uses E15 regular to do so at $2.39 a gallon for a cost per mile of slightly over 14 cents. And that is moving a much heavier pickup than a 1500. It might be close to a tie with yours if the 6.0 was in a 1500. Which would make my cost per mile around 12 cents compared to your 15 cents per mile.

 

It is pretty lame of the F-150 to do so poorly.

I do not know why Ford doesn't recommend premium in the Ecoboost powered vehicles. I bet they would return better mileage. I am not too "engine-inclined", but my girlfriends Volkswagen with a 2.0L turbo requires it. I know it has something to do with the compression ratios, so the CR 2.0L turbo in the VW higher than the fords? I wouldn't think so.
