Hooked on the 6.2, but wavering a bit

Oh don't get me wrong I'm a Gm guy, this is my third 6.2.. And I never lined my ford up, but seat of the pants felt like my ford would run off, hell it was making all its power at 2500 rpms, when the boost comes on its fun! Spend 1k on the ford and your really talking power, spend a grand on the 6.2 you don't even have a set of headers.

Stock for stock absolutely not. I've seen half second difference between a GM 6.2 vs even a newer lightened F150 3.5EB at the track(13.7 vs 14.3). But now this same EB has a crazy tune in it and he's running high 12's which is nuts! Advantage Ford on tuning because of the extra boost! However it still only runs a couple mph faster in the end. 102 vs a 99. It's the immediate monster torque they make once tuned which gives them straight line bolt. But I will still take my normally aspirated more responsive super fun to drive big V8 any day!

I love my 6.2 NHT and as any true 6.2 owner laugh at Ford drivers. LOL

Great info. Appreciate it.

This reminds me of the late 80's when Grand Nationals would prowl the streets. Darth Vader looking things.

They were quite a machine weren't they? :)

Buy the 6.2 you won't be disappointed. I sold a 2005 2500 HD ECSB 4x4 Duramax and got a 2008 1500 Z71 with a 5.3 Needless to say I was underwhelmed and sold it 3.5 years later. Swore I wouldn't buy another 5.3 and after another Duramax and two 6.2's all I can say is the 6.2 is a beast. Great mid range acceleration with a guttural sound to boot. Both my 2014 and 2015 trucks have been trouble free. Good luck with your decision.

I currently have a 2008 6.0 Vortec Max. I know the tuning of the 6.2 is for a less responsive pedal for gas mileage, plus I have the 4 speed vs the new 8, but how do they compare? Has anyone had both? The VMax is an awesome engine, and I've driven several 5.3s and wasn't impressed.

This reminds me of the late 80's when the Buick Grand Nationals roamed the streets.

All the "muscle" cars were V8's, then that little turbo v6 threw a wrinkle.

I wish Mercedes made a pickup with that twin turbo v8 they had in the GL450 two years ago.

That would make the decision easy. Would probably have to hit the lottery first though. Ha!

Going to drive a couple of 6.2's after Christmas.

Will make sure I push the pedal past the "click" this time.

At least a full second difference in the quarter mile on the forums and a lot more in reality... It's not even a comparison really.

while the truck is turned off, press the pedal down a few time to get a feel for it....

Why do it when the truck is off? Turn the damn thing on, find a back road, and hammer on it!

The Gen V 5.3 and 6.2's are different machines altogether. The latest 5.3 would ape rape a 6.0 Max any day, hands down, in nearly any category.

I say "nearly" because the fleet maintenance type reliability and serviceability are still up for grabs. But not for long.

I do wish that were true, but the 3 buddies I have with the 5.3 seem to prove otherwise. It's not significant, but they just don't have the same acceleration that mine does. I've driven 2 of the 3, and have done a quick race or two and they just seem more sluggish. They have slightly more torque (383 vs 375), but slightly less HP (355 vs 367). Both of them have the 6 speed, and I have the 4. All 4 trucks are quad cab, 2WD. Obviously their gas mileage is significantly better, but I really want at least the same throttle response or better than I currently have. If the 5.3 had that, I'd skip the 6.2 and save myself $2500, but at least in my comparison, they just don't compare. The 5.3 seems way too tuned for gas mileage for my taste.

Based on what others have said, I'm thinking I wouldn't be happy with anything but the 6.2, but I've yet to drive one. But, I'd be curious to know if anyone has had the 2007/8 and above Vmax and gone to the 5.3 or 6.2?

If having a fast truck is important to you, get the 6.2L. My 2014 5.3 is not up to the 08 6.0L Vmax I had. It's not anything like the old 5.3, in fact it's not far from the 6.0L. The 5.3 is plenty for most people, but you'll regret not having it if you put performance ahead of mileage.

The 2016 5.3, in SLT or LTZ cone with the 8 speed and more mechanical advantage via gearing. Supposedly the throttle response is better too...perhaps test drive one of those? Should close the gap in performance a little.

Run E85 in the 5.3 and the horsepower jumps to 380 and torque is 416.Now your past the 6.0 in performance. To me having the 6.2 for $50.00 more a month on a 4 year loan is a no brainer. I have a smile on my face every time I stab the peddle on the 6.2.

Do you guys have dragstrip times to back up your 6.0's being faster?

My 2014 5.3 would walk my buddies CC Silverado SS pretty hard and beat my other buddies RCSB Max even worse.

    • How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.
    • Out and about yesterday on a long Saturday drive I passed a lot of Shell stations. My preferred, so I pay attention. Lot's of small town Illinois so not six stations in three blocks like the city.    Everyone of them over a radius of say 100 miles had regular at $4.19 but one which was the one closest to home at $4.15. However Premium pricing varied greatly between 85 cents over regular to $1.50 over. I'm not counting the price of the station with the lowest regular so the reference is the same for the remainder and all within the same brand. However the spread discrepancy holds across all brands.     @txab, any thoughts on that?
    • What are your thoughts? The Chevy Blazer relaunch was an epic case of 'lunchbag letdown'. Jeep Wranglers and Ford Broncos stick out like a sore thumb.    The AI photos do not look like a 'retro version', but shrunken Tahoes. Get away from the 'futuristic look'. I've seen two concepts. One had rectangular headlight like a Rivian and the other way to big should include dual round headlights like the early version.   If not this would look OK   At least it has GM styling (albeit the K2XX) A lot of the images floating around look like Bronco IIs or the current Bronco. Looking at the Broncos in my area (central Ontario, it seems to be a mix of 2 doors and 4 doors, 'mall rated' to ones that could go offroad.    I'm sure a AT4 and AT4X RPOs could be outfitted similar to a Rubicon if the braintrust understood the whole offroad scene. Crosing my fingers that if it does see the light that the front air dam/bumper doesn't extend below the center line of the tire...
