How often do you use tow/haul mode

On our 2013 Tahoe, I find myself using tow/haul mode a lot. I don't tow that often with the Tahoe but I like the driving characteristics of it better.

My old truck had a 4.8 in it and I live in a hilly area with a small mountains to cross and used the tow/haul quite often. The 4.8 was a good little motor but even with 4.10 gears it still needed the lower/longer gearing of the tow/haul mode to help it out. On my 2014 with 5.3 and 3.42 gears I never use it, truck has plenty of get and go IMO.

Everytime I tow. Helps with keeping trans Temps down as well. I tow at least 3x a week so anytime I'm hooked to a trailer, even empty. Also helps reduce slippage in the tranny down the road

When I'm towing or hauling...LOL.

Jokes aside...in my 2012, here or there I'd run it empty (Z71, 5.3, 3.42 gears). It would actually run AFM longer so I'd try to see how it did mileage wise. Plus, if I had a tank of E85, E85 seemed to run AFM longer when just in D, so I'd fire tow/haul to see how much run time I could get in V4. My 15 HD, I've used it with loads in the bed but that's about it. The 4.10 gears make it un-necessary when empty.

I use it every time I have my camper hooked up (14 Z71 5.3 3.42). I have tried a trip with it and the same trip without it and it seems to be much happier with it on. I also just got my AutoCal from Black Bear so I can't wait to see the difference that makes towing as well as not.

I just wish the snow would stop so I could go fast enough to get a few WOT runs so I could send in my results to get my tune!!!!!!

Only when I want to have a little fun. I remember reading somewhere where it said it was not needed on anything under 7000#. My boat, trailer, gear and other crap is around 5000# and the 6.2 yanks it easily so no need for it but if I'm pulling out in traffic I'll turn it on just to get up to speed.

Whenever it is shifting to often.

(which is usually only when hooked to a trailer and pulling grades.)

In general, tow/haul mode maintains lower gears longer and increases shift pressures. It is designed to be most effective when the vehicle and trailer combined weight is at least 75% of the vehicle's Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR). Operation of tow/haul in a lightly loaded or non-loaded vehicle will not cause damage. However, there is no benefit to the selection of tow/haul when the vehicle is unloaded, and use of tow/haul mode during unloaded driving conditions will decrease fuel economy and may generate shift feel concerns.

I've been running mine in TH mode around town lately and love it. Throttle response and shifting is much improved.

Gas is cheap!

Use it mostly for stop and go traffic.

Same here, up until I got the Blackbear tune. I seriously hated how Drive shifted, I would either use tow/haul or m5.

Now I actually enjoy using Drive and only use tow/haul for what it was intended.

There was a recent thread touting it has Haul Arse mode to be used for spirited driving, longer gear holds, seemingly better throttle response. YMMV.

Hi guys, quick question! Im considering of buying 6.2 '15 sierra 1500 SLT with max trailering package. So my question is would it be ok for the truck to tow my '32 travel trailer which is around 7500lbs dry? In the gmc website is given that trucks with max tow package can tow up to 11700lbs but my friends are telling me that towing such a trailer will be difficult for 1500 and I need 2500...? Any comments? Thank you!

Never! I don't find it useful with a load on with my 2015...... just tries to keep the truck from upshifting and hangs up more in gears for no reason.... Can't stand it. What I would want is an M mode that shows the gear the tranny is actually in and lets me upshift it when I want too..... that would be great! The wire from the shifter is broken in 2005 and I have no reason to repair it.... was useless in that truck too. I tuned that one myself and it shifts great but I didn't use it when it was stock either.

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    • No one will care for you like you care for you. Do what you can for as long as you can. IMHO of course.
    • How about them NICKS!!!
    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
