I just got my truck back from the dealer today and found out that it had a busted exhaust valve spring on the #7 cylinder.

The back story is last week i pulled out of my driveway and the truck started shaking when accelerating and the motor was running terrible. The transmission also started downshifting really hard at the same time. Any time it dropped into first it shifted really hard. the MIL light was blinking and the traction control light was on solid. The DIC also had a message that said service stabilitrac. All these happened pretty much at the same time, needless to say i never got out of my neighborhood. Parked the truck and brought it to the dealer on Monday. When i fired it on Monday it drove fine for like 2 miles then same symptoms which eventually cleared by the time i got to the dealer bnut the mil light was on solid by then.

Truck was at the dealer for 2 days. They discovered a broken exhaust valve spring on #7. That would explain the misfire but it does not at all explain the transmission or stabilitrac messages. The tech said after the miss was fixed that all appears to be fine and he cannot find anything else wrong. I trust this dealers work as they have always done right by me in the past so i picked up the truck and its driving as it always has and everything appears to be fine.

The truck has 32K on the clock, is 100% stock and other than a couple of recalls for the transfer case programming the truck has only had one other issue. That was a failed injector on that same #7 cylinder about 10k mikes ago where the truck ran rough when cold but fine once warmed. I don't beat the hell out of my trucks so this motor has not been abused buy any stretch. I do tow with it but i don't flog it and i do maintain it.

Anyone have any ideas as to what went wrong? The valve spring could have simply been faulty and i can totally see the misfire being related to that, makes sense. The transmission and the really hard downshifts are really what puzzles me since they cant find anything wrong. No codes and after the misfire was fixed its gone. The tech did get to feel the downshift in the parking lot and even he was a little puzzled.

Other than the stretched timing chain i had to replace on my 97 vortech 350 after 300k this is the only other time i have had an internal part failure on a GM truck V8 and i have owned a few.

Yes, but hasn't the 6.2L been out for awhile, or is it completely different in 2014 vs the GMT-900s?

Different.

The trans acting weird along with the stabilitrack, and traction control messages sounds about right. My Cruze had a misfire issue about a year ago, and it did the same thing. Dealer said it was due to it misfiring so bad. They fixed the issue, and the car has ran fine since.

These engine electronics are so interconnected that one problem may show up as something else. Case in point, disconnect the MAF sensor on my Raptor while changing the oil filter. Forgot to plug it back in. Started the truck and I got several messages about my stability control system. Shut it off, plugged the sensor in, restarted and all was back to normal. Weird how a MAF sensor can set off a stability control message.

The transmission control module passes data back and forth with the engine control module. When your valve spring broke and the engine ran like crap, the data on engine performance received by the TCM caused it to try to adapt and in the process, acted strange.

All of the systems are linked, when the SES light tripped the system goes into limp home mode. That kills the stabilitrak system, as said once the power was off balance by losing a cylinder the transmission wont shift right as all of its shifts protocols are based off of torque input.

Cascading waterfall effect.

    • I'm not sure if this should be a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - AC Delco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles, 119k total miles.  When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so I did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out, it could've been the wrong fluid. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material, scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance. I had a panic stop prior to this issue which may have contributed from what I read. And on the first attempt to bleed and hydraulic test the scanner listed things to look for and one was any gaps between the pad and rotors which I did notice on the RF corner and I removed the outer pad (where the gap was) cleaned it and the hardware and didn't see a gap after that but will re-check it. I read that if pushing the caliper pistons back then you're supposed to open the bleeder so as to not push fluid backwards into the abs module or it will damage it. If that's true then that's also a possibility from the previous owner having the brakes changed before I got it. I'm using an XTool ip500 scanner. Any suggestions, questions and comments welcome.
    • Next Friday will be my 6 week point from my right knee replacement.  The surgeon says it will be fine if I choose to drive after this checkup.  I know I could drive now but best to do as my surgeon (and my wife) tell me.  Richard compared being 62 to 72.  I remember when I was in my early 60's I was experiencing slow but regular decline in my mobility.  Thanks to good medical support,  i continued to fight the speed and spread of this decline. During my 60's I worked on non-surgical methods and just when I turned 70, my orthopedic surgeon recommended joint replacements.  In a little over a year, I had one shoulder and both knees replaced.  This hasn't been a terribly fun experience, but worth the discomfort as my future mobility health trajectory has reversed.  It is a treat to now be watching my mobility. balance and confidence steadily improve!
