If it means anything my dealer tried to buy back my 2014 at a premium because they are shipping them south. Supposedly due to the exchange there is good money to be made.

I know when things were flipped and the Canadian dollar was strong they came here to buy vehicles. As long as it's built in North America then it's supposedly pretty hassle free from the govt standpoint. I'm not sure if you'll find a dealer willing to sell and I think warranty may be an issue too.

It's a bit of a joke. Trying to sell my '09 to a guy in Seattle. I had to get a letter from GM Canada stating that the truck meets DOT and EPA standards. Letter must have truck VIN on it. The truck does not meet the LABELING requirements for passenger side air bags. SO I have to get the dealer to affix a metal decal to the glove box and send the receipt with the bill of sale as the US Port Authority will want to see it. I would doubt that you could move a brand new truck across duty free as American dealers close to Canada would not be happy about it.

You say new.

I remember when the exchange rate was the other way. Dealers in the US border states were under threat of losing their dealerships if they sold to Canadians. I wonder if the reverse is true now?

The Canadian dealers will not sell you a new one. They will happily sell you a used one though.

Not very many used trucks on the lots around here. They all get shipped to the US. My 2500HD duramax was loaded on a US bound hauler the same day I traded it. The dealer listed it on some kind of US auction site and the bid was what I got on trade.

i have emailed a few dealers. only 2 got back to me and said they only sell to canadian residents. they have very little used inventory. i would prefer a new one

dealers are saying they will only sell me a used vehicle. they say i have to have a canadian address to sell it to me.

I read elsewhere that others are doing this.

oh well

My last truck went south and my 15 is 3 months old with 5500 km...they MUST be 6 months old AND have 12000 km...better get a 16 ordered.

GM usually voids the warranty once you import between Canada and the US.

They will not sell new cars as I think they have to be at least one year old to import them.

GM does not void any cross border warranty, warranty will be valid regardless of where it originated from.

However, it is required to be at least 6 months from in service date AND have 12,000 kilometers/7,500 miles on it or GM will under no circumstances issue the letter of safety and emissions compliance. And, any dealer that received incentives will be charged back those incentives along with having their allocations curtailed. In other words, if I as a Canadian dealer, sell you as an American buyer a new truck... I get any rebates charged back to me, and they make it difficult for me to get more new trucks for inventory.

So, no dealer in their right mind wants to sell a new vehicle across a border... it's just too costly.

My own personal trucks go south at the exact point of 6 months or 12,000kms quite consistently when the exchange rate is favorable. Last one had an American buyer speak for it even before it was ready, the day it was ready... it was gone!

The labeling compliance mentioned earlier isn't a big problem, my shop just installs the US version of the airbag indicator light and provides a work order to show that it was changed to meet US standards and that's all that's been required. Keep in mind that Canadians don't have a "title" like you American folks do... so you have a bit of song and dance to do at your own title office with an original registration from Canada before you can title your truck.

I have dealt with the import/export of a couple hundred trucks through my dealership between when the exchange rate was high vs when it was low.

So whats the ballpark trade in for a 2015 All Terrain w/ nav and 22s at 15000kms? I've been toying with the idea of going to a 16 Silverado, I really like the new look.

$38,000 Canadian against a cash price. Can a dealer show you more if they don't discount the new truck sure... but that's what it's wholesale value should be as long as it's not weird or has a bad history. If you're worried about how much your trade in allowance is, then do it against retail and it'll be a good $10K higher on a no finance deal.
