Help me un-ugly my 2016

LTZ headlights are a no go, they're actually switchback LED and use an entirely different system. They'd throw a code in the bcm, and they're about $800 EA.

 

I texted my friend at the body shop about paint, he didn't reply, but he rarely does. I'll run by and ask him in person if I'm in the area.

 

front bumper, paint grade is $440 plus shipping. paint that for $150-200, install it myself in my shop, that should HELP.. but... I just hate the teeth in my grill.

 

I might take it off this weekend and take thet eeth out of it hey clip in, and see what that looks like.. maybe I can do something tacky like put chicken wire behind it.

 

I remember when I bought my 15 I saw these 16s and I was like EUGH! So glad I got a 15!

 

and now......

 

They had a 15 midnight ediition on the lot too when they did the repurchase, but since the msrp on that truck was way higher (ltz) than my LT 15, even tho it was older and GM had deep discounts.. they wouldn't even consider it. I woulda been SUPER happy to have a '15 midnight edition!

Different strokes I guess, I think the 16's are far better looking then the 14/15 and not to mention are you insane, most of us would love to have the updated and actually bright enough to see at night headlights and you want to go back to the old junk?

 

Really color match that entire front end and get a nice set of bfg ko2's on that thing and you will walk backwards after you get out of it!

There are grille inserts being made for the 16s now. If the 'teeth' bother you one of those may help. Heck there are aftermarket grille replacements if you want to go that route.

OK, I just got back from the shop. One thing I have always loved about GM is how modular their vehicles are.

 

This isn't gonna be hard.

 

OK, so.. here's what I learned:

 

the 16 grill is SUPER easy to take off. a dozen popits on top, 4x 10mm bolts, and then pull from the bottom, sides, middle, and unclip the top and it's off.

 

2nd thing: the "tooth" look of the grill is the actual grill. The chrome clips on! So.. I can unclip the chrome and have it painted, then clip it back on.

 

The headlight chrome clips on and appear to be held on with adhesive, I'd have to figure out how to get that adhesive off, and to do that I need to get the headlights out.. which.. I haven't done. The small piece of painted trim below the headlight attaches to the chroem of the headlight. It clips on, but how remove? Dunno yet.

 

Once you do that the 16 headlights come off like 14/15s. 2 tops, 1 front one side.

 

The 16 bumper comes off like the 14/15 bumper 4 tops 2/4 sides and pull straight out.

 

So... to color match I need the $440 primered bumper, and someone who can/will paint chromed plastic pieces, and a bunch of legwork to get the chrome headlight trim off.

 

and we're done for probably under $1000.

A decent body shop should be able to paint the chrome bumper without issues. I painted a chrome bumper on my old F-150 and it held up for the 4 years I had it and another 6 or so for the guy who bought it.

Maybe you could find one of those "bras" from the '80s haha. Im itching for a new truck and usually buy every year or two. I am praying GM really gets the next gen reboot right. I hate the thought of buying a Ram.

like many people have said, color match that bumper! color match your front and rear bumpers, the grill I'd almost wonder if a GMC grill would fit in there. Which if so I'd get a GMC grill with the black mesh. My dealers in town for me to color match my truck told me 750 installed on the front and 600 installed on the rear. While it's not cheap it is way better than plastidip or vinyl wrapping them. Other than that I'd say level it with some 20 inch black rims and black bow ties up front and on the tailgate to tie it all together.

I feel the same way the front ends on the 16 Silverados are hideous that's why I went with gmc this year! Maybe a brush guard to cover up its face!!

The grill is not very appealing, I agree. I also agree with others on the 18 inch rims. Those are killing the look as well but if you like them then that is all that matters. The red and white truck shown on here in earlier threads are pretty sweet.

So.. I intentionally bought a new 2015 in Feb. Problem is.. it was a lemon.. and I got a repurchase.

 

I targeted a 2015 because 2016s that aren't Z71 are ugly ugly ugly! In my opinion.

 

so anyway.. now I have a bulldogface truck.. an LT with the toothy black grill, andI kinda hate walking out to it in a parking lot. I actually park so that it doesn't face me, cos I can barely stand it.

 

Help me un-ugly this thing!

 

I'm thinking color matching, but how can I do that without spending $5000 on something so small? The truck is Autumn Bronze Metallic. If it were summit white or onyx black I could vynil wrap it and be done, but.. can that be done with this color?

 

Can a body shop paint these chrome parts? Is that a bad idea??

 

What can I do here? Send me your ideas!

I would suggest enjoying your truck as it is for awhile before any major modification. I think the front end of your new truck looks fresh and vibrant. The monochromatic look is appealing but I wouldn't spend money to change from chrome to paint. This is very much a personal taste issue and I am not suggesting you are wrong in wanting to change. I am suggesting not rushing into it because you have a great looking truck as it stands and your perspective may not be the same in a few months! (IMO)

      2 speed transfer case optional now?

      This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.

      2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.

      Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉

      Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
