How do you remove gas from the tank?

That is not an emergency it is a screw up. No ones life was in danger. Solution there is drop the tank and drain it, No rush. Siphoning was silly as there is no possible way you got it all.

Gas does not hurt a diesel like diesel does a gasser, so you were probably ok doing that but the reverse would not be so lucky. Many military vehicles have diesel engines that are converted to run on just about anything from gas to diesel to biofuel to wood grain alcohol.

How many people want (or even have the tools with them) to drop a gas tank in the parking lot of a busy gas station? His was a great reason to siphon the fuel out.

Also, if you're out in the boonies and somebody runs out of gas - siphon some over. There are legit reasons for this.

EMP...............tornado..............hurricane................blizzard..................flood................the last 4 could leave you stranded for days/weeks, and you may need the gas for a generator, chainsaw, snowblower etc. The first example would be the most catastrophic; anything controlled via computer would be toast; and fuel would become a valuable commodity.

I've wondered about siphoning gas out of my truck for the same reason. I keep 20 gallons of gas in the garage for the generator, but IF that wasn't enough and I couldn't make it out to fill up my tanks (or if tanker trucks couldn't make it to the gas station to fill up those tanks) I figured at least my truck should have 10-20 gallons of extra fuel in it in a pinch.

If you are worried about any of those things buy yourself a US military auction vehicle and make a doomsday machine. Or just keep a few jerry cans laying around. Problem solved. Buy solar panels for electricity, no need to run a genny in 2016 also get a handsaw & a shovel and you could survive infinitely longer than with 'some gas I managed to siphon out of the truck'.

I am literally trying to picture some old crotchety dude in an end of the world situation firing up his snowblower to clear his driveway. "The world may be ending dammit but he who has the cleanest driveway wins!"

Totally missed my point........................in an EMP situation....................................short term siphoning could be a necessity......................until folks re-think and re-adjust to the different conditions.

How many people can call a tow truck. everyone.

I live in the boonies or at least where there are many signs that say 'Check Your Fuel, Next Station XXX KM'. I often go out to the bush and never not once has anyone with us never brought spare fuel. The amount of time in my life someone has had to siphon fuel to get back out of the bush ... zero. It is simply such a far off probability that the chances are about as good as Doc Brown showing up and converting your car with a flux capacitor.

Wow the guy asked a simple question, try a parts store if there is a way to do it safely they'll have it.I have used a small clear hose and slid the hose as far as it goes put my thumb over the end and pull out point to the ground. Use a small wooden object to hold up the flapper so no boom. Works real good on full tank. Yes there was a hurricane all vehicles were full and cans ran out. Geez

Had a situation where a buddys wife filled his 09 Duramax with gas. She only drove a couple of miles home. After we bought a siphon pump at Harbor Freight and were able to remove all the gasoline. Just changed the fuel filter and put in 10 gallons of diesel and it started right up. On a gas truck you may have to hold open the filler valve but should all be good. Lots of luck and sorry for your troubles.

Alpine didn't live through Hurricane Katrina in Long Beach, Mississippi. I did.

There are legitimate reasons to siphon fuel. My boat was on a trailer in a boatyard. I found it (not where I left it) and towed it to a neighbor's yard. The filler tube was anti-siphon so I unscrewed the cap where the assembly attached to the polymer tank and had access to 55 gal of ethanol free gasoline. With a siphon.

There was no other fuel for private use for quite some time. Amazing when the structures, trees and street signs are gone, it doesn't matter how familiar you were in your home town. When it gets dark, you're flat lost.

Emergency? In my opinion, yes.

My aunt and grandmother lived in Pass Christian during Katrina. My parents and I immediately drove over from Texas and it took us a couple of days to find them, but they survived. Barely. We brought about 100 gallons of spare fuel with us because it was rationed across several states for months. That was an emotional 5 days I'll never forget.

There is literally no emergency that would warrant doing this. And if it is an emergency there is no way you could remove enough fast enough.

Please give us an example of said emergency because it sounds to me like you just want to siphon gas and I doubt anyone around here cares to help with that.

* I could have a million or even a billion dollars in a bank and money would still be an issue so you must be JD freaking rockefeller. .

Hurricane knocks out power and blocks access to outside world...there's 38 gallons of generator fuel sitting in that tank...happened to me during Sandy.

That's a real world example...not hypothetical.

Same thing when Hurricane Charley came knocking back in 2004. My boat had a good 50 gals in it so you might as well use it. Why would you not use it, and if I needed 5 gals out of the truck I'd take it. Heck if I forgot to fill up the small can and it was time to mow the grass, I'd rather take it out of the truck than change gears and drive 10 mins to get it. I haven't needed to do it but it's really no big deal since it's my gas.

In a situation like this you literally go down the street poping holes in gas tanks with a screw driver and drain them before someone else does. You better believe I would. Still no need to siphon it would take too long and you can only do 1 at a time. That is the reality of the world. All the vehicles in Sandy were written off anyway.

Heck some people do not even wait for an emergency:

Not in my case, we actually sustained ZERO damage, but trees were across every road and had no power for a couple weeks. The truck was filled with gas just for that scenario.

Just because you can't imagine a scenario, doesn't mean it hasn't happened. Maybe you should live through a couple disasters before you engage your mouth...

Had I caught you; you wouldn't have made it out of my driveway.

Okay guys, knock it off. He asked a simple question on how to perform this, not a 2 page argument on how to justify it. Get back on topic.
