New Truck Fever.

I have a 2012 GMC Sierra SLE ext cab max tow with the 6.2 in decent shape. Currently at 48K miles. I probably won't have much equity in it after looking at nada and KBB, but it sounds like there's good deals on new trucks right now. Unfortunately you have to pay premium price to get the new 6.2 since it only comes in the LTZ/SLT/Denali, so that's probably not going to work for me. I drove a '16 5.3 SLE and it seemed so much smoother and refined than my current truck. I'm afraid if I keep my current truck I'm going to have to start replacing things (just did pads and rotors all the way around a couple months ago). I have a year left on the powertrain warranty. I shouldn't be putting many miles on it in the next year since I work out of town during the week and drive a different vehicle.

Does anyone have a similar truck they've recently traded? What are you getting for trade and what should I expect to pay for a new truck with an MSRP in the mid 40s?

The KBB / Edmunds etc will get you a good range for tradein or perhaps a private sale to an individual. On a 2016 model right now if you are not getting at least 20% off MSRP it is NOT a deal. Fly on up to Laura GMC and pickup your new truck and drive it back home. they had killer deals a few weeks back on double cab SLT's with the 6.2 that were approaching 25% off MSRP! You can put your old beater on craigs list and get it sold later on. Please post a pic of the new truck when you get back tomorrow afternoon.

To sum it up, you have a truck with only 48k miles that you have little to no equity in that you want to replace with a 45k truck so you can save money on repairs that are not needed yet and you still have a year of power train warranty?

To sum it up, yes I would trade in my truck for a new one with an MSRP OF 45K. Obviously I wouldn't pay MSRP, hence the reason I asked what I should expect to pay for a new truck of that list price. If I could find a smoking deal on a '16 and received what my truck is worth on trade I would definitely consider it. Not that it's of anyone's concern but I'm not jumping into a new vehicle if it doesn't make sense TO ME financially. I'm pretty picky about the condition of my vehicles. As much as I try to keep it up, with salted roads during north country winters signs of rust are nearly inevitable within the next couple of years. It's also a nice peace of mind to have the bumper to bumper warranty and the powertrain warranty.

Keep it one more year and get a '17 when the '18s come out

There are a lot of good reasons to upgrade from a 2012 to the new generation. Doesn't really make a difference if it's a 16, or a 17. If you see a truck on the lot you like for the right price I'd go for it. If you don't, you can easily wait until next year, and probably have more selection to choose from. But the price might be a little higher.

Do you use your max tow w/ 6.2 for towing? If not, you will save a bunch of money going with a 5.3.

I'm completely happy with my 5.3 with the 6 speed and I can see myself driving this truck until the end of it's life span.

There's no rush, you have a really nice truck and still under warranty.

But if you see a nice one, in the color you like, sitting on the lot with a 20% off deal going, you can bet someone will pick it up very soon so honestly, if I found the right truck I'd jump on it if I were you.

i just traded my '13 Silverado LT Z71 5.3 with 53k on it and got 28k trade in. It was also lifted.

Car dealers all over love this line of reasoning. But hey if you have money to spend...why not right? But then again if you have money to spend why are you overly concerned with repairs that "might" happen?

So you have a 4 year old truck with 48K on it and you're worried about it all of the sudden needing expensive repairs? Why would you buy another GM if your fear is the truck is a driving money pit that is under 5 years 50K? Your logic makes no sense....if you feel that way you're a prime candidate for leasing.

If you already don't have equity in your current truck, it seems you are in no position to be looking at a new vehicle. If your truck had over 100k miles, then yeah I would agree with getting rid of it. Just doesn't make financial sense right now.

48k miles, that's it? I got 64k on my '14, would probably be 75k if it hadn't sat in the body shop all summer. I wouldn't even consider trading that truck in yet, just my 2 cents

My 2012 is just shy of 53k miles and still has OEM brakes, I checked when I bought it used.

So yea maybe you should be looking at a new truck if you had to put new ROTORS and pads on. :happysad:

Seems logical to me. :nonod:

I have the same truck (2013 ext cab, 6.2, SLE, leather, 20" wheels etc.) & fewer miles. Earlier this year a dealer had insane deals on 2016 double cab SLT's w/5.3. All in would have been somewhere around $14k off of sticker. The trade in offer for my old truck was bottom of the barrel wholesale pricing & old truck is virtually flawless. No dents, dings, scratches. A few small rock chips & some scuffs in the bed.

Point is, I kept staring at my old truck thinking how great of a deal it would be to score it at the wholesale pricing they were offering. So I kept it.

In hindsight, do not think I could have went wrong either way. But as you mentioned, the last generation 6.2's were available in SLE trim & it was a $1,000 option then. Which also scored the 14 bolt rear end & 4 wheel disc brakes etc. Now it is $2500 on the more expensive SLT & up trim lines. So if you really have that new truck fever. Polish up the old one & try to sell it privately this month while keeping a watch out for deals on new ones that fit what you want. Be specific too as buyers remorse can be more expensive than speculated repairs on your current ride.

The new generation trucks are incredible, trading in for that alone seems like a good enough reason to me. If you don't have much equity in the 2012 then it's almost better to trade because you won't have much in the new one so nothing really changes there, if you can afford to trade I would. Good advice here on the 5.3 vs the 6.2 as far as price points go, I just traded a 2014 5.3 for a 2017 6.2 and I do love the new truck but the 5.3 was excellent.

As far as price and selection.....hurry up if you want the 20%+ deals as the inventory isn't getting any better. I ended up finding the truck I wanted as far as color and options but was a 2017. Selling price of 50,500 from a sticker of 58,210 and they gave me 28,200 for my 2014 and KBB said highest trade was 28,500.

It was a fair deal, maybe even a pretty good one.....the 2017 will carry one model years value above the 2016s so the 13.5%+ is comparable to the deals on the 2016s imo. Be careful of second stickers and try not to buy very much if anything on the backend of the deal and you should come out ok. One thing for sure......you will love the new truck! Good Luck and post what you get please.

I just bought a 2016 Sierra SLT Double Cab. the previous truck is a 09 Sierra SLE. What a difference. much more refined and smoother. rides really nice.

It took me some time, but I got 30% off sticker and then another 2500 off with GM dollars. Many dealers wouldnt talk with me; saying they have never taken over 20% off. Be patient.

Trying to sell my 09 now,

Most of us have faced similar dilemmas. The decision is personal From what you describe, you already have a great truck and it will retain a high trade-in value for a few more years. A new truck is nice but you will own even less of it than your current truck. You have several years of potential worry free driving on your 2012 and if you pay it off it will look a lot better than the new trucks! Do what makes you the most happy. I had vehicle loans for decades and drove nice vehicles. I broke that cycle many years ago. It is an awesome feeling when someone says you have a "nice truck " and you don't have the bank as a co-owner!
