Would be tough, but under right conditions, possible. Took a little over 1000 mile road trip and got roughly 17.5 for the trip on my then new 2015 2500 a few months after buying it. Hand calculated along with DIC and it was only off, maybe, 1 tenth. Round trip central Iowa to Memphis TN with a stop at St. Louis for a business meeting. Just rolling hill stuff. The lifetime average for the pickup is around 14 mpg. But it is a rural use pickup and not a city commuter driver sort of thing, so that is probably why it has a little better than average lifetime mpg.

I had a 2015 2500 HD 6.0 and my wife set the all time high of 17.5 MPG according to the trip computer.

For a whole tank or for 25 miles?

That 3.73s and driving like an old person...which has a lot to do with it. I'll bet the 1500s I see everyday don't get 15mpg on my commute, but they jack rabbit starts, race to the next light, and pass me at 85mph...

I agree it MAY BE possible with 3.73s. That's why I was asking to see if the early 15s might have had 3.73s and he thinks its 4.10s. He does drive like an old man, but if his truck has the 4.10s for sure, I don't believe the 19-20 mpg claim he is making.

I dont drive my vehicles hard but here's my real world 6.0 mpg when I parked it at the dealer and traded on a new Duramax.

I don't think they offered 3.73s in anything after 13 or 14 without it being a chassis cab?

And not for nothing, but 4.10s might actually help, less throttle to launch and less power to maintain speeds. Again, depending on driving style.

I think your buddy is high. Best MPG I've ever hit in 120 mile trip was 15.6 driving about 65-68 mph. I normally average 11.5-12.5 MPG around town and highway.

Never have figured out what driving like an old person is. Is that obeying the speed limit? Well, given that speeding tickets are just a money cost and a nuisance to many, if you have a commercial drivers license, all it takes is 2 tickets of 10 mph over the speed limit in a year to loose your license (and your livelihood) for 6 months. Yes, even in a personal vehicle and not just during commercial driving. Look it up in the regulations. That would cause my entire business to fold up and be no more. Many other violations that are very minor to the average driver, can mess up bad the license of a commercial driver.

anyhoo, the 17.5 mpg I got was in rolling hills of Missouri and Iowa. Running about 65 most of the time, which was the speed limit over a large portion of the drive. And Hwy 61 and 65 in Missouri can hardly be considered "flat" for much of it. The mpg was for the 400 mile average and the overall trip average. I did make a mistake though..... stated 17.5 it was actually 17.4. Memory not as good as it used to be. It could be that I have over 5 million miles of commercial driving under my belt and have learned a few things about how to get decent fuel economy from any vehicle. My Cadillac CTS the same type of thing. EPA highway is 25 mpg, I can get 27-28 frequently. My commercial semi truck, lifetime average is 7.93 mpg over 642,000 miles. That is well over 1 mpg better, in fact almost 2 mpg better, than the national class 8 truck average for the same type of trucking. Just skilled, not driving like an "old person". That 1 mpg better average for most wouldn't mean anything, but for a commercial heavy truck, that equates to about $8000 a year is fuel savings.

And lifetime average for the 2 years I have had this 2500, including some local short distance towing, lots of hauling, on highway, in town, daily rural gravel roads of a minimum of 2 miles one way, off road on the property checking things and fence line and some work, everything.... the average lifetime mpg for my 2500 is about 13.5 mpg. The question is not about the vehicle, but the skill of the driver that really one should be asking themselves if they can't get above 12 mpg with a 2500 6.0L. I could even get 16 mpg on my '98 2500 with a 454 on some road trips.

It means not racing from red light to red light, driving 85mph in heavy traffic, tailgating at speed, etc...

I set my cruise in most cases (which doesn't give the best mileage by the way) and on the stretches of highway around here I run 65mph (typically 63mph) or less even though posted at 70mph. But that's only part of it...

I run with my windows down in the summer, and it's amazing to hear the cars in traffic hit near to red line just taking off from a red light (that "I got to be first" mentality). I also find it funny that the Prius owners are some of the worst offenders...always driving faster than the speed limit, always foot to the floor.

And not for nothing, I also get amused when I get lined up with another truck at a redlight...they ALWAYS race off when the light turns green like we were drag racing, or they will rev it up along side me (yeah, I got an exhaust too). Some of the worst offenders in the truck world are the diesel owners...when I had my Cummins (and even today in this truck), they will goose it along side me so I hear their exhaust or they will punch it to smoke a little....really?

And not for nothing, I see this everytime I'm on my commute...I run 100 miles a day, couldn't afford to drive like everyone else.

Yeah, pretty common place.

I still get a smile about this one occasion in the Chicago metro area. Was in my semi truck going down Harlem Ave and there was a little sports car dead on my butt. When we took off from the light, he couldn't stand being back there anymore and decided he was on a mission from God and had to get going. He floored it and shot out around me. Problem was, he was so close he couldn't see there was a broke down car in the other lane and he ran right into it. Being in a hurry and trying to draft someone can be a detriment sometimes.

Another instance of the racing and drafting stuff. Semi in front of me blew a trailer tire near Iowa City. 4 cars in left lane dead on each other's butt. 1st car just missed the gator the truck left on the road, the second just clipped it, the third ran over it which thru it right into the windshield of the 4th car and caved it in. Maybe they learned something from that incident, but I doubt it. if the other 3 cars had been using sensible driving techniques, they all could have missed the gator and went on home.

I see it day after day. It isn't about driving slow, it is about driving sensibly. I will generally run a little slower, but within a few mph of the prevailing traffic and I am always watching for stuff a quarter mile or more in front of me. I don't wait to get within 10 feet of a traffic light or stop sign to start slowing down. I don't feel the need to use the traffic lights as my own personal Christmas Tree lights on a NHRA track. If traffic is slowing or stopping, I have plenty of time to brake moderately and slow down. All in either a heavy truck, my 2500, or my Caddy. 5 million miles with no caused accidents and only two moving violations.

I used to be the MPH adverage nut on long distance driving I'd go 5 MPH over always time my stops etc. I finally figured out that over a long distance I would save 20 minutes sometimes even 40 minutes on a 12 hour to 18 hour drive. Not worth the anxiety. Much more relaxing to drive the speed limit and let the crazies pass on by. I don't drive more than 8 hours anymore since I turned 40, I'm 61 now no tickets since 99.

I agree the main factor is driving style but the equipment determines a lot of the fuel mileage also. Most of my driving is City stop and go and I just drive normal with occasional burst cuz the exh and CAI sound so good... 2016 CC SB denali with 6.2 8 spd 3.23 has bed cover CAI and Borla catback exhaust. AFM is set to ONLY come on above 50 mph. I believe that with this combination and half arsed right driving that pretty much everyone is getting an overall average of over 20 mpg??
