19-20 mpg possible 6.0 gas?

Friend of mine and I was talking the other day. He has an early 15 2500 with the 6.0 and only thing he's done to it is put exhaust on it. Truck is completely stock, and torsion bars are in stock locations yet. Truck has just under 16,000 miles on it. Guy SWEARS he get 19-20 mpg on the open road with it. I know these trucks were standard with 4.10 gears, but could it be possible the early ones have 3.73? He says its 4.10 gears, but I just don't see how 19-20 is possible. My truck's best was 12.4 in completely stock trim with absolutely no modifications.

I know there is already a MPG post here somewhere, but this just seems too far-fetched for me to believe.

Only 3/4 ton 6.0 that I ever saw get over 19mpg was being hauled on a tractor trailer to a job site LOL. If you want to have some real fun with him start slipping about an extra gallon of fuel in his tank every day for a couple of weeks and let him get used to great mileage and then stop and see what he says about it...

Maybe if it was pushed off a cliff or being pulled by a Duramax. Jokes aside, if 19-20 was normal unloaded, they sell out of 6.0 engines in these things!

That mileage claim is incredible if true, but big heavy gas powered trucks sometimes do better with a lower speed rear end. I ordered my 2005 Ford CC 4X4 long box with 4.10 gears and talked on the V10 Forum for 3 years and everyone on that Forum that had got a V10 with the optional 4.30 gears got better mileage than the 4.10 guys.

Ours was very very poor, the 4.30 guys were just poor. With high torque diesels, the 3.73 is the right choice.

With a gas engine, I like 4.10s and I am sure this is why GM stopped putting 3.73s in the HD gassers.

We had a 2001 2500HD with the 6.0 that we got 17 or 18 mpg out of once if I remember correctly. Then again we were roaming around on back roads and butt crack of no where roads in Maggie Valley where our top speed was probably 30 mph. With my 2006 6.0 the best I remember seeing was just under 15 mpg that was doing 55 on the highway for that 3/4 of a tank.

Its impossible for him to get that mileage, he would be lucky to get 15 mpg. EPA estimates for a 2 wd 1500 is 19 mpg hwy.

4.10 is only available ratio for 6.0L

3.73 is only available with diesel.

The absolute best I have got with my 07 with 4.10 gears was 16 when the truck was fairly new and we were on an interstate, little traffic, use of cruise control and probably a big tailwind

My typical MPG is around 13 and towing is around 8

You guys are saying exactly what I told him. I just going to chalk it up as him trying to sound cool in front of a bunch of guys and not knowing WTF he's talking about.

It depends, I've gotten 20mpg...once, last summer in South Dakota on interstate. I would guess low teens for city, I get 14 to 15 mixed city/highway on my daily commute, and 16 to 18 open and forgiving highway (i.e., flat). That is hand calculated, when I care...I didn't buy it for gas mileage.

That 3.73s and driving like an old person...which has a lot to do with it. I'll bet the 1500s I see everyday don't get 15mpg on my commute, but they jack rabbit starts, race to the next light, and pass me at 85mph...

I drive mine 90% highway at 70 and if I'm lucky I get 11.4. 4:10 6.0 stock tires. It idles more in the winter so I see 10.3 most of the time. Oh well, the view is worth it.

Tell him to stop resetting the avg mpg on the dashboard and let it run for a full tank of gas. I know that number won't be 19-20. All jokes aside, my father-in-law has a 2016 Chevy dclb with about 2k on the od and he gets about 14mpg. And he does drive like an old person if you define old as being a qualified senior citizen.

I had a 2015 2500 HD 6.0 and my wife set the all time high of 17.5 MPG according to the trip computer.

With me driving it would consistently average 13 MPG per tank full which I track on the Trip A setting, I track my miles between oil changes on the Trip B setting and again no matter where I went or what I did it averaged 13MPG exception being if I did any towing then it would be 7 - 9 MPG depending on tow weight and speed which would skew Trip meters accordingly.

I recently purchased a 2016 2500 HD 6.0 and again its pretty much the same experience 13 MPG average over the first 800 miles.

I had a buddy said the same thing...I was trying to tell him it was impossible especially around here with all the hills. I blame it on poor math skills.....

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    • No one will care for you like you care for you. Do what you can for as long as you can. IMHO of course.
    • How about them NICKS!!!
    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
