You want to make sure you get the corresponding year cluster for your truck.

I just got a 2019 LTZ Silverado that has the same setup already just no HUD. I wonder what will work for this year/model?

Hud Was never offerd in 2014 -2019 K2xx generation trucks. Some trucks got the red leds for heads up alert / active low speed braking. SUV’s had HUD but have a different dash. 

 

You have to cut your truck dash to retrofit a SUV HUD which requires many other parts. 

 

I believe pgamboa offers a kit of the required parts.

The K2xx trucks are from 2014-2018.  The 2019 trucks are the new style (T1xx) and HUD is available on the upper trim levels.  I don't know what it would take to add it to a lower-trim truck.

That's true but only in limited numbers.  When he said 2019 I just assumed he meant the new body style (the 2019 K2xx is called "1500 LD").

You will need to tell us which one you have.  If the headlights look like a 2018 then you can't get HUD without major modifications (but there is a thread on here where somebody has done it and is custom-fabricating the dash shroud).  If it has the newer body style you can probably add HUD if you get the dash components and have some custom programming done.

The 2019 model has HUD 

You need to make sure your instrument cluster has the connections in the rear of it for HUD. Contact White Automotive and  Media Services. On the website is 2019 instrument cluster .

Have them active the HUD. They did my cluster. Easy people to work with. If you have any questions after talk to WA&M. Private message me. I will see what I can do to help.

First, Big shutout to @cmatt and @pgamboa - you two rock!

 

Second, I finally got around to retrofitting my '15 Yukon Denali with HUD (yes, it did not come with it - very early version I guess).  Thanks to this thread, a harness from CMATT, and other google searching everything is in and working, sorta...  Note:  before sending my OEM cluster to WAMS to be programmed I thought i would give it a try, and what do you know "0  MPH" was displayed

 

At this point the HUD will display the DEFAULT view, but when I try to switch to a different view via the "INFO" switch - the HUD goes black - no info and will not come back.  It is still working as i can move the display box up and down but no data is shown.  The only way i can get the data to display again it by disconnecting the cluster connector (P16) from the back of the cluster (essentially resetting it).  After that, the data will display again.

 

Question:  Does anyone know what might be causing this?  is there something to try?

Did you get a compatible cluster custom programmed by WhiteAutoAndMedia.com for this to work?  This is a requirement for it to work.

Sorry for the delay, I did not yet, I emailed WAMs to see / verify that programming will resolve the issue first. I have not heard back from them yet.

Well, I guess I’m late for the party.. I guess I didn’t do an update on my 2 attempt to HUD retrofit in a 2014-2018 Silverado/Sierra models.
Here’s a few pictures..
I modified everything to make it look as close as factory.
Big shout out to@pgamboa with harnessdr.com made all harness plug and play.
And whiteautoandmedia.com for HUD Enabling programming.

It's Aug 2022 - and after reading this blog from 2017 - I felt confident this is something I wanted to do for my 2015 Tahoe LT (we're not trading in - so why not update, we had just bought a 2022 Suburban and liked these newer features).

 

I ordered all the required parts from WAMS, and color schemes for my vehicle - and the custom wire harness from HarnessDr.com   Note: I don't work on cars - ever - but I felt comfortable knowing that if I had the tools, time, and patience - I knew the support was here if I got in a jam.  So - moved ahead buying all the parts and reading all I could. Bottom line - I did it. 

 

I added Radio / HMI 2.5 modules, 2016 programmed Denali Cluster for HUD ready, HUD System, Hud switches, and USB port under armrest, and the wire harness to make it all work from Phil at HarnessDr.com   When I got stuck - Phil was kind enough to coached me on through to completion (via email).  I was totally successful  - but only thanks to everyone who contributed here and to Phil at HarnessDr.com 

 

Everything I read, watched, all parts, tools etc.. are attached on PDF doc. 

Note;  highly recommend buy cluster wires from HarnessDr.com and getting equipment from WAMS. 

You can order the rest of the items where you find good deals.  

 

TECH NOTES: 

When you tap into X51L fuse panel at X1;  i recommend takin time to pull fuse panel out.  There are two clips - just figure it out and get it removed - it makes a huge difference getting to x1 and for quick testing.    When you tap into pin #3 (yellow) and #35 (red) -- just solder that joint and tape.  Don't try using those clips - they don't work well and not reliable.  Just peal back wire (careful not to cut) and then wrap your new wire around and solder and tape.  The green wire going into cluster connector in open slot #21 (bigger light green wire) has a pin that clips in - so simple.  Phil at Harness Dr provides the pin for the Green - so you're good.  Just solder the two other connects and you'll be fine.  This was the hardness part - and it really wasn't hard once you read Harness Dr instructions (that come with the  new harness) 

 

I didn't provide photo of project because we've seen all those before - I just posted a few photos of the detail wiring I had not seen before and had to figure out on my own.

    • Thanks - I wasn't quite caffeinated this morning. 2:1 makes sense, turning the crankshaft 360 degrees will turn the cam 180 degrees, and had I done that, the cam's dot would be at 6 and the crank's at 12 again.   I went ahead and took the sprocket off anyway, aligned everything dot-to-dot including the balance shaft just for s&g. I'm glad I did because I discovered no Loctite on the timing sprocket bolts. Maybe it's not required, but at only 20 ft-lb torque spec, those bolts aren't in there very tight. Cleaned and reassembled with some thread locker and torqued.   A general observation: Less is more with RTV. If a little doesn't stop a leak, a LOT probably won't, either. RTV is thinly veiled revenge, in a tube...      
    • The timing marks are ok, that is #1, you can turn it over until they line up and it won't change anything, the crankshaft turns twice for every camshaft revolution, I have always set up SB Chevs as your pic shows using a straight edge
    • Someone's been here before.... There is a receipt for a 3-piece timing set, purchased earlier this year.   Is this picture something, or, nothing?   I have the timing cover off and my crank is perfectly TDC and the keyed gear's locating mark is dead on 12 o'clock.   The cam gear locating mark is also at 12 o'clock. Now, I'm not an expert, but all the install guides say the two locating marks should meet and be perfectly aligned when installing a timing set. The mark on the crank should be dead on 12:00 and the cam gear's mark should be dead on 6:00, and both marks should be perfectly vertically aligned.   I believe the timing gear is keyed or has a dowel that ensures it can only be installed on the cam in one position, so I have to believe the cam is out of phase somehow. At the very least, with a triangular bolt pattern, it can only be installed in one of 3 different positions.   Before I pulled the front cover, the truck was running alright, no service engine soon lights except an occasional P0172 / rich condition. Timing -16 timing at idle (should be +16), and total -35% fuel trim, two conditions I haven't been able to figure out.   In related news, my injector tested pretty well, wasn't leaking, but I had it rebuilt anyway, and it's on it's way back to me.         Along with this discovery, the good and bad:   Good: The oil pan seal appears undamaged.   Bad: -The timing cover has been reused, and the positioning dowels have been broken. That could explain some of the leaking. -Some kind of white paste or grease was used to try to seal the oil pan seal and timing cover (since wiped off..). -Then, someone globbed silicone all over the front of the cover and also buried the ckp sensor in it. But, they didn't put any inside the cover or use RTV to try to seal the oil pan seal with the timing cover (good).
    • The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.                 
    • It also depends on what criteria someone is using for “best” when talking filters.  Are we going off best efficiency?   Best quality/QC?  Etc. because the two may not mutually exclusive.
