Towing a Bass Boat? 1500 sucks at towing?

I did install 5100 Bilsteins in the rear only, they do have more control.

But the big issue you have is tongue weight with your boat. rarely are boat trailer axles set correctly and trailer needs to be level.

So at full max load the trailer is rated fro 5000lbs. I would put his the actual weight below this.

 

Now if the truck has a 3.08 I can see why there is an issue with power though.

This guy is looking for an excuse to get a bigger truck.. So go get a bigger truck.. Here let me help you... The 2500 or big Diesel truck will tow your boat better.. You should get one, even better go get one of those cool looking Raptors.. Yea, that will do the job :driving::drool:

 

Now for the truth, you need to post up specs on your present set up so people can help you. Truck: gear ratio, age (shocks worn out?), Boat tongue weight. Boat trailer set up. is the trailer level?

 

Yes, you probably need to put a few bucks into your present set up to make it work better. This is the order I would look at doing things. 1. Get the boat trailer set up right for the load. 2. Get the tongue weight right and level the trailer on the hitch. 3. rear shocks. 4. Rear end gear ratio needs to be better than 3.08. (expensive to change gears)

I agree with the consensus that its a tongue weight issue. There is no reason a 1500 wont tow any bassboat on the market. Have you checked the height of the hitch ball? The trailer should be level when its on the ball fully loaded.

I'm not familiar with boat trailers but I assume you have a weight distributing hitch like a travel trailer.

 

 

Negative, small bass boats just use a standard hitch. My 24ft Wellcraft with a Volvo-Penta 350 I/O weighs in about 7500 lbs including the trailer and it uses a standard 2 inch ball. I don't even know its back there except for my 0-60 times fall off a little.

Yea, nevermind the OP replied in post #21. But the guy might have a life beyond the truck forums. Give him time to assess everything. Heck he might not even know the gear ratio if he bought his truck second hand.

FYI you can find out by calling GM customer service with your VIN.

First OP a Raptor is not something you want to go after if towing is why you are considering switching. Second you in no way shape or form need a HD diesel for your little bass boat... If you are that uncomfortable towing 4k'ish pounds with a 1500 you should probably leave it in a slip somewhere as I can only imagine the boat ramp issues you might have.

 

As others have said it is probably off balance some. Weight the tongue weight and go from there. Shocks may help some but springs are a bigger player when towing. Consider adding a helper spring that picks up after the initial stage.

 

If you do replace the shocks don't go with an off road shock, they are softer and worse for towing regardless of what some here say.

 

The stock tires aren't your reason, changing them won't change your issue. You may have more traction though.

 

Finally those that say they can't even feel their 5k plus pounds on the hitch are just lying, period. I always laugh when they say that. The tundra guys were always big proponents of that statement "towed 9k yesterday like it wasn't even there". BS.... I am a big fan of our trucks but even with a couple jet skis out back you know there is something back there regardless of how little it affects the truck all around.

That is dry hull weight. Add trailer, motor, equipment and fuel and it will jump over 5,000 pounds fast.

Again total of boat trailer and motor will be closer to 4000lbs, plus gear. Even at 5000lbs whees the problem????
