Can any other than the dealer program a key? How much?

I already have a key that's cut and a working FOB. I just need the ignition key programmed.

You can do it yourself if you have an original key to the truck still. If you are replacing a lost key, different story.

Adding a new key to original keys already programmed (must have at least one original):

Take the current learned key, turn the key to the ON position.

Turn it of and remove it.

Take the new unlearned key and turn that to the ON position.

You will see a message with "(number of keys) programmed." You will leave the new key in the ON position for about 10 seconds to make sure it learns it.

Start the truck with the new key!

If you are replacing a lost key(s) and have no other spares already programmed:

With an unlearned master vehicle key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Observe the security indicator, after approximately 10 min the indicator will turn off.

Turn OFF the ignition and wait 5 seconds.

Repeat steps 1 - 3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 min.Start the vehicle. The vehicle has now learned the key transponder information.

Thanks much. It worked first time. I had asked the dealer for a 3rd set of keys when I bought the truck. They mailed a fully cut key to me with a new FOB. I had programmed GMT800 and 900 keys, but not a K2. I thought I had read where the K2 couldn't be programmed without dealer equipment, so it sat in the drawer for 3 years. Now, I've misplaced a set and need a second set. Thanks again.

BTW, the dealer I bought the truck from is 100 miles away and a local dealer wanted $133.

Just an FYI. This exact process will not work on a '17. There is a process but requires 2 "known" keys to learn new keys. GM has upped security for '17.

Correct. I found that out the hard way even after I read the updated procedure the month before LOL.

I realize this is an old thread but im in a bind. I just bought my truck and i only have 1 key and 1 key fob. What are my options to have 2 working keys in my truck? I read about the 30 minute procedure but if i understand correctly that will only program 1 key so again trying to add a second key wont work correct?

Ok guys I just dropped my truck off at the locksmith and he actually told me how to program the key myself. I have a 2019 Silverado 1500 legacy and he said that after the 30min procedure there is a 9min window to program the old key back in and more keys. You actually have to program the second key or the truck wont start. I went ahead and let him do it and a remote for $50

I just got this to work on a 2018 Sierra using this process - worked great and total cost under $20.   Key B119 from car and truck remotes and Ace cut for $10

Thanks to  car keys express for info:

Adding Gm Basic Transponder Keys Must Have 2 Working Key (Manual Procedure) Up to 2017 and Up

  • Insert a master/working key and switch the ignition on. (I waited for security light to go out)
  • Insert the SECOND master/working key and switch the ignition on.
  • Wait for the security/immobilizer light to go out. Switch ignition off and remove key.
  • Quickly insert a UN-programmed key and switch the ignition on.
  • Wait for the security/immobilizer light to go out. Switch ignition off and remove key.
  • The key is now programmed.

DIC also showed that I had 3 keys programmed.

Happy Camper now!!  Hope this helps someone.

Wow Ace cut it for $10 that's cheap. Do you know if they cut it by code or copied one you had using a tracer type setup? Also does it matter if the door is open or closed?
