On Star Trial Questions

So I keep getting notices that my on Star trial for new truck is about to expire. What exactly happens then, does everything just stop working? Is there any part of it like emergency stuff that works forever?

Trying to decide if it's worth another monthly payment. Never had on Star before.

Thank you!

You lose all features (calling, vehicle diagnostics, turn-by-turn nav, etc) offered by OnStar. If you're in an accident, they do not contact you via OnStar, you do not receive vehicle diagnostics and reports, etc. The system still has all the original capabilities (and can be activated in the future), but you don't have access to them...just like if your XM radio plan expired, you won't be able to listen to XM Radio.

Depending on the year of the truck, the app for your phone will still work without an active Onstar account. It 3 to 5 years I think.

Basic coverage for 5 years from in service date, which allows you to use the app for remote key fob functions. I also still get the monthly diagnostic reports a year and a half after my in service date. Other functions will not work as stated above.

I was told today without an active OnStar account that the in-dash nav stops working because it uses the OnStar turn-by-turn for GPS signal, any truth to that?

Depends on which in-dash nav. There is an OnStar turn-by-turn on that shows up between the speedo and tach. That one will not work without an OnStar subscription.

But the 8" nav where the radio is will continue to work without OnStar. You can buy updated maps through NavTeq but you don't have to -- it will work for the life of the truck it just may have older maps.

Onstar, intellilink,MyLink is garbage. Mines going nutz. iPod sync is horrible, all controls super slow, nav is junk. We all should get a GM turn in rebate to buy a much better aftermarket system.

You lose the premium features but retain some basic features. I think you even retain the remote start through the app?

And they still send you diagnosis emails to drum up service business...we got one the other day that the OLM was at 92%, which means they still monitor the vehicle because I change my own oil and reset the OLM.

Hum, no issues with any of that on mine, everything works fine. Maybe you need to take it to the dealer

They ever offer any kind of discounts? I would like to keep the full package for peace of mind, but $35/month is just stupid lol.

And then the hotspot appears to be an add-on even to the big package? Damn.

I read something about connecting it to you ATT account, which I have for my phone, may look at that more..

I have never seen a discount and I've looked, only offers I've ever seen are the trials for expired subscriptions but the vehicle needs to be new to yoj

Ok so, trail ends tomorrow...Do I renew?

Who here has onstar still going, for peace of mind I guess?

Anyone use their data plan also? I stream all music so considering that. Wish it could just use my ATT plan though that would be cool

I just renewed at the "Protection" level. A no cost "Basic" level stays turned on for 5 years. Go to the OnStar website and you can get a side-by-side comparison of the plans offered.

Good idea, I just renewed the same, and added unlimited data because I stream music while on the go, so we will see how it goes!
