Rag Left in Oil Pan

If the OP had said he drove it around the block with no oil pressure, I'd be worried. I got from his post that he saw 0 pressure as he pulled out of the dealer's drive and pulled back in immediately. Not much rpm, time or load. No crystal ball, but I think it'd be a good probability of no permanent damage. If he has a 100k warranty, that'd make sleeping at night easier.

I was excited to get the truck back until I pulled out on the highway and a warning message popped up that said to shut off truck due to no oil pressure!

That sounds like more than "around the block" to me.

Fair enough. If that means he drove it a significant distance with 0 oil pressure, I missed that. I guess it could mean it only went to 0 when the rpm came up.

Nice diagram, the problem is all the dealers I've been to in the last 10 years go front to back. I've been meaning to ask them why but I've been getting good tread wear so I don't.

They do front to rear for directional tires and just do all vechiles the same so it saves time and they are off to the next car.

On the rag issue, they told you that story so it should be true, could have told you they found nothing, any way, I would ask for a lifetime engine warranty. You would be covered if anything happens till you are ready to trade for a newer truck.

I just took my truck in on Tuesday to have the oil pan gasket replaced too. Was starting to leak around the front bolts.

Most places around these parts rotate tires fronts to rear and rears to front. Forget about any cross patterns and such nonsense. Take my vehicles to a friend's shop and he personally does it in the manner I request.

We had a 4wd work truck (fleet F150) where the oil pan was leaking. Common problem with 90's era Furd's as they cut costs by not painting oil pans and it later rusts out. Since it was a state DOT owned truck they told us to take it to his one shop. Couple days later the shop called to say it was ready. Boss says to take Tom and go get it. We got the truck and left the shop. I was ahead of Tom as we merged onto I-95 N but I lost him in traffic. He buzzed me on radio and says, the truck just quit. So I find an exit and head back to find him. Open the hood and parts are sticking out of the oil pan and a trail of oil behind the truck. Called the motor pool to find out what to do, guy asked "What the hell, did the mechanic leave his sandwich in the oil pan?" They had it towed to a local county road garage. They brought us a new truck (Dudge) the next day and took the F150 to auction w/o being fixed. Had nearly 100,000 miles on it and would have been replaced within a year.

GM just washed thier hands of your truck with that rag. Yer fooked plain and simple. Is it GMAC financed? If so I would leave it on the lot, get a good attorney and send right back to um. Of course that's me. You may have a different approach. I got nothing but time.

^^ My opinion is Surfarado is at least 90% accurate if not 100%. If you ever have an issue with the engine, GM is going to point to the rag and tell you to see the dealer that left it in there for repairs. Then the dealer is going to point to GM... They will point fingers back and forth while you are both broke down and without your truck. Not worth the hassle in my opinion.

Dealer made the mistake, have them do a trade/buyback that makes you whole. Its better that they take the loss on this one instead of you. Its just the cost of doing business when you have incompetent employees.

Side note: I would actually agree with GM if they denied warranty work on the engine. It is not their fault that this happened, not a design or manufacturing flaw, it was a dealership mechanics screw up.

Again, I would get the truck on a oil analysis program and might even have a discussion with the service manager about paying for it for a couple years. You should be able to see any continued deterioration of the bearings in oil analysis. I think it's a reasonable approach that is fair to the owner, dealer and GM.

Be fair to a dealer who left a foreign object in the engine? If it was me I'd be driving a new truck today with ZERO out of pocket. Absolutely no reason for OP to stand for this!

You might demand a new truck, but demanding and getting are two different things. Whether or not there's continuing engine damage can be diagnosed with oil analysis.

Yep and dealership is responsible. Not every other dealership out there just this one. Now they documented the rag incident in the system so now every dealership knows and will refuse to warranty this vehicle. Now if your comfortable taking your truck in for further issues to the same place who originally caused the problem....think man. GM would say...not our problem...dealership who ruined it problem...next.
