Brand new 2018 Silverado comes with rust ?

I used ultra high temp clear on the manifolds on my former 2013, and on my 2017. When I took delivery of both trucks brand new, they had nice, fresh raw cast iron manifolds devoid of rust. When I traded my 2013 in August of 2017, it had a very light surface rust, and my 2017 looks new after 3500 miles and 6 months. This is in a shitty upstate NY climate too.

I agree with your concern and I believe you should express your upset with your dealer.  If they say it is normal, have them show you other 18's on the lot with the same issues. I would also ask for a detailed shipping history of your truck to make sure it wasn't on one of the lots that experienced flooding.  A good dealership will do what they can to alleviate your worries.  They may try to pat you on the back and send you on your way but don't quit until you are satisfied and your worries are eliminated.    My guess is they will offer to coat the problem areas like your differential and offer a complimentary service.  If there is no "history" to your truck then I'd consider this to be a fair resolution!

It is superficial surface rust on cast iron pieces.  Perfectly normal.  Spend time enjoying the truck.

At this stage all it can be is surface rust but it looks awful on a brand new truck.  Mine didn't present itself like this and 2.5 years later it still doesn't.  It definitely stands out enough to concern the op and I don't believe he should be satisfied with a this is normal statement.   If it is normal, then no problem.  He should be able to see other trucks on the lot in the same condition

I have owned dozens of vehicles so far, and every one of them showed surface rust on RAW, CAST IRON exhaust manifolds.  How could they not?  It's a non-issue.  OP, if it bugs you that much, get some headers or some high-temp spray paint.

Surface rust on the raw parts may be expected when the truck has been sitting outside on the lot and will probably not be as noticeable after awhile.  It is the rust on the painted/treated parts like around the differential that I would find unacceptable.

I don’t think it should be accepted as normal, but it’s nothing to worry about. I’ve got 15,000 miles on my ‘17 and don’t have rust to that extent yet. But your truck could have been hauled on a carrier that drove through some winter weather and encountered some salt spray from the road. Being this time of year it may have been test driven on some salty roads as well. All depends on where the truck originated I guess. Did it have any test drive mileage on it when you took possession of it?

None whatsoever. I picked it up and it had 3 miles on it

Unfortunately poor low quality paint on components underneath all trucks is the norm it seems . It is a ball buster tho buying new and with the price we pay . We all like to think well at least we must have bought high quality at least for this high price .......then you look underneath. I compare it to a restaurant ....nice Clean facade out front at the customer entrance but out back where the door is for cooks and deliveries......grease tanks and pails of overflowing grease...cigarette butts everywhere....paint faded and stained.

This is my 2015, driver's side, 35K miles, and snow belt of central New York. Sorry about the quality but it's only 15 degrees right now. The white stuff on the valve cover is salt spray.

Exhaust manifold is bare metal, it’s gonna rust. If it’s not too late have the truck undercoated, before the wheelwels rust from the inside out.

My manifolds were like that as well... my dad was a dick about it when I brought it home.
“Congrats son, it’s a beautiful truck.
*pops hood* nice rusty manifolds by the way”

I would be curious to see pictures of anyone’s truck who claims they don’t have it....

I was curious about my manifolds so I decided to pop the hood and check.
First picture is of my dad's 17 with about 12k miles.
Second picture is my 16 with about 22k miles.017e9bba72c3a907227a4ec5a9032a8d.jpgd947322a97bb45a1ca3052872f37aad2.jpg

Can't really say about manifolds but rest of my truck I have no rust underbody just changed oil and greased the front, 8 months and 18k. I plan on cleaning my cai I'll look and get some pictures. I'm in Denver now we've haven't had much snow here so not much salt also...

PI0281E: Underbody Component Corrosion – 2017 And Prior GM Passenger Cars And Light Duty Trucks

With pictures. enjoy.

"Note: During transit between the plant and the dealer, some of the exhaust system components may corrode as a result of salt exposure. These exhaust parts are made of a bare mild-grade stainless steel that will oxidize, or appear rusty. Over time, these components will have a uniform rust-like discoloration, which should be considered a normal condition."
