This is a crazy thread no doubt. Can anyone confirm that this does not occur on the full solid window? I don't have the slide open rear window.

Yes it seems to be a problem with the connector on the sliding window. With all the opening and closing it gets worn and dirty and bent and creates a hot spot. The full solid windows have been fine as far as I know.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I Hope GM steps up and gets this resolved for all the owners that have the sliding window.

I can only imagine how that must feel when one hears that pop and sees that window shattered.

Oh, crap. Sorry to hear that. I have the full solid window also. I'm going to refrain from using the defrost. I turned off the auto defrost in the settings menu. Infotainment/settings/vehicle/climate and air quality/auto rear defog. I'm only going to use it when absolutely necessary. Then wait for a recall...

Good evening! Sadly this is my first post on this forum but I have lurked a bit. I own a 2017 Sierra Denali which I bought in May of 2017. I was driving today and after using my remote start to start the truck (like i do often) I drove 5 minutes and then smelled smoke. I turned around and saw smoke pouring out from behind the rear seat on the driver side. I began to freak out and pulled over to get out but about 10 seconds after I saw the smoke and began to pull over I heard a loud bang like a gunshot. I turned around and my rear driver window shattered into thousands of pieces. It stayed in place but shot a decent amount of glass inside and outside of the vehicle. I am dropping the truck off at the dealership in the morning to have this diagnosed and this is clearly something that should not of happened. I only think what would of happened if I had kids or people in the back of the truck when this took place. Very disappointed right now and want this taken care of, but figured I needed to post this on here to inform all of you about this issue. I have researched this happening and it is a common thing on some Ford f150s but I havent seen to much about GMC.20180221_155246.thumb.jpg.879f22a74290ed4f0e03ff15da7b4ffd.jpg

I had this same exact thing just happen to my 2016 high country last night. Did dealer cover this or you get any answers about this issue

Did you find any answers on this of it’s a recall won’t let me view the comments

I am still doing research. I had my rear defrost short out on my 2018 GMC Sierra HD last week. Luckily it did not shatter the window.

Dealership is telling me I'm not covered under the recall and they want $1400 out of pocket to replaced the rear window assembly.

Even my Ally Major Guard extended warranty denied the repair. Crazy.

Looking into other options. 44k on the truck.

I've reached out to GMC customer service. Waiting to hear back.

Also, does anyone know the fuse/relay location for the rear defrost. I want to pull that before things get worse.

You are very welcome.

Do not give up with GM, make sure you have opened a claim, and get the number, you will need it.

Really stress the point that you purchased an after market warranty from a GM dealership, and they are denying this too. Let them know you are upset, and want this to be taken care of, see how that goes.

If you start to lose traction, on this approach, start down the road of them helping you with the cost, this is when you will need help from the dealerships service manager, hope you have a good relationship with the dealer. They can do a lot more in helping you that they will let on.

It amazes me with how widely known and documented this problem is that any dealer would even try to say that you’re not covered. It went from the official recall fix being to just remove fuse #10 to actually replacing components on the window surface at the junction point where it closes. And yet some of them are still giving us a hard time about it.

I was going to try putting in a timed relay after I removed fuse 10 and then I just went thru the whole winter not once saying “jeez, I wish my rear window defogger worked”. So I’m just leaving it off. And tbh I don’t even know if I’d have any confidence in it not happening again even after the FULL fix.

The heated mirrors still work w/o the rear window so I don’t even think about it any more.

I completely agree. It is mind-boggling why they don't include all VIN numbers in the recall.

    • I will admit I haven't experimented much with pressure drops beyond the numbers I put in and part of that is that the numbers I used are fairly low and then found out it would trigger regardless at that 35 psi. Having said that I had tried before had changed the placard pressures and being that I have a 1 ton set to 80 on the placard for the rear I believe it triggered close to 60, the front I don't recall now for sure but thought maybe it could get close to 45 from that factory 60 placard pressure. So I never did figure out if it was a number of psi from placard pressure to the alarm or a percentage of the total placard number as some figured it was like a 25% drop from placard pressure would trigger it. So as to try and answer your question, I believe I set the placard pressure on the front to 47 or so and while I run the front tires at 40, they have dipped below that some if its colder and I haven't put "winter air" in yet and never once have had the front alarm go off. I would say that the answer your looking for is no, that if you set your placard pressure to 45, you have a certain amount of room to drop below that pressure before the alarm will go off.    The pressures you decide to run in your truck, that ends up being what makes sense to you based on what your carrying in your truck or if towing, then have to bump them back up to something that will carry the load in the rear and the fronts typically left at the same pressure. It all comes down to that chart I put the link to and using an accurate roadside scale to be your guide, both unloaded and then loaded to know your minimum safe pressures.    I just wish GM would allow a person to change the readings for the tire pressures to the English system of pounds as I have to look at that goofy metric reading that will never ever jive in my head and will go over and change it just to figure out what they are if need be and then change it back.
    • That part I understand, that the dealer can do it. But I'm not understanding why updates that were available to the truck since it left the factory, or the dealership originally, would not still be available to it without dealer intervention.   I'm thinking along the lines of recalls. They stay available until they are completed. Why not updates as well, especially since some of those can be safety related also?
    • That's good to know, but I don't think I'll even be running them under 45 in the rear  unless it's on the sand or something but will only be for a short distance anyways!    I didn't read all the instructions in the booklet yet, but do you know let's say I set the rear psi on the placard to 45, will the warning light come on soon as it drops under 45 or is there a percentage it has to drop from the set value before the warning light is triggered?
    • That's bad.  Like, its probably destroying the stub axle the CV slides into.   Do you have a proper lift installed with differential lowering brackets?  Did you install AT4/Trail Boss factory CV axles?
    • Hot? New Jersey? Today? I was working on my old 2000 Silverado 1500 today. Believe me, it was boiling hot today. As it has been.
