Oil pressure 6.2

I know this thread has beaten like a dead horse. But from what I seen in common is that most people have around 20psi or higher at hot idle. I've noticed this summer(can't remember last summer) that my oil pressure is below 20psi.i would say between 15 to 17psi. This is after driving for maybe 25 mins mix highway city. No additional weight in the truck. I've seen the pressure slightly lower than that but not much. Cruising is usually around 30 to 35.i run mobile 1 0w20 with mobile filter and change oil around 5000 miles. Currently around 3200 on oil. Just wondering if you think it's a indication of weak oil pump or something.  My 2016 5.3 never went that low

Here's a real hot idle after pulling a trailer up a monster grade at 70 plus.  Less than 10psi.  At normal operating temps I regularly see 12ish.   Outside temp 110.  I came on here for trans cooler suggestions and saw your post.  Motor only has a few thousand miles on it and so this was my first towing trip.

I seem to remember the old saying, 10 psi for every 1000 rpm.   If that’s still true, then you are close but fine.   Then again.  It was an OLD saying....?

I'm guessing you're indicated pressures are accurate or close.  I see in the 12 psi area at idle once the engine warms up and OAT is 80F or above.  I have run Mobil 1 in the past few trucks since new.

 

If you're concerned, take it to the dealer.  But, I would bet dollars to beers they'll say "it's normal".

What's your dash show when it's 10psi. Is the dash Farley accurate. I don't tow with my truck at all. Mine is just mostly highway driving. I'm not going to say I don't beat on my truck(anyone with a6.2 that says that it's lying) but it doesn't matter if I just cruise at 70 either

When the temperature outside is cooler below 75 80 ish. It will not go below 20psi. It's only goes below 20 when it's hot out side. I blame the 0w20 water weight oil

I have not logged temp, but I'm sure its probably scalding.   Normal low for me is 12psi.   This is just the lowest I've seen and probably is from the high temps and thus the only reason I took a picture.   According to dealers 6psi is the minimum so apparently they don't care about anything above that.  The corvette boards recite roughly the same.  It should be noted that mine is a rebuilt motor as well and I'm more interested in whats normal in case I want to take it to the shop I had it built at.  Some say cam bearings could cause this as well as an oil pump.  

 

I looked at other sites and they confirmed the use what ever oil weight that gets you 10 psi/1000 at 212 degrees reasoning.

Please do next time you tow as that is contributing to your issue.  Judging by the coolant and trans temp and description of use, I would guess your engine oil exceeded 260 degrees.  Do that with thin oil and you get really, really thin oil....

How much above 20?I would love for mine to be above 20.my we 2016 5.3 stayed above 20. But not by much. 

I am a little concerned about it. But I hear no engine noise at all. I know dealer will say Normal

Being in the desert and towing up big grades I was half expecting temperature problems so I put a 30 or 40 weight in it before I left.

Not sure why some choose to keep a razor thin margin for error in these not inexpensive machines. The 0w-20 spec was made to save .1 mpg for federal mandate and not to tow a trailer up a hill at 70 in the heat. Put in thicker oil of your choice or risk it all its your choice. Do a Used Oil Analysis on this fill and see if there are some bearing metals in the oil. As the bearings wear the pressure will get even lower accelerating the wear. Good luck

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
