My understanding of rock lights is dont go cheap. One youtuber with a nicely done GMC for Sema had them placed so that once they were on, shadows of any sort were eliminated under the truck. If you like them, go with it.

They’re not illegal if you don’t drive around with them on.

Being capable in some cases is still illegal as stated in this section so be careful on color and placement.

Hmmm.  Actual physical control means moving and it clearly states in bold red or blue light visible and directly in front of the center of the vehicle

rock lights go in the wheel wells or under the vehicle and as I said if you’re not driving with them on I doubt the cops will bother you.

Any idea what went wrong with the back lights?

My only guess is from the shit weather in CT in the winter something got in them or something. I checked the wires and they seem fine. I thought the clips I used may have exposed some of the wire but they didn’t. I also tried putting the front lights on the wires of the back lights and they still worked so it’s not the module

Weird that more than one would fail simultaneously though. Hopefully it's nothing big and an easy fix when you have a chance to pull them and check.

I meant more about the capable part, meaning even if they are off having them attached makes you capable of turning them on, and since I'm not positive if visible means the diode must be visible or the light coming from the diode is enough in which case the light bleed from inside the wheel well could still be visible and a violation.

I am pointing it out just so its thought about. I believe it's more for people who mount red or blue strobes on their grill or in their windshield but with the wording being vague I was pointing it out as a worse case scenario. Also as a reason to go single color for some people in states with even more strict laws.

I have the blue tooth  Oracle rock light set up that you control with your phone. Two pods per wheel well.  They’re bright but not crazy bright so if you’re looking for super bright look elsewhere or more pods.  I just got to Oracle wheel lights as a gift which I here are crazy bright,  and should look pretty slick with all the candy powder coating I just haven’t had a chance to put them on yet.

I guess the wheel wells are for cosmetic purposes ?  Rock lights are just that ROCK LIGHTS.  They are supposed to light up the ground so you can see the terrain at night when off road.  I am actually in the process of installing them on my silverado .  I have 8 lights.  I got the new Rough country ones because of the way they are designed, plus I know they make some good stuff.  I am mounting one in front of each front wheel , behind bumper, one behind each front wheel, one in front of each rear wheel, and one behind each rear wheel.  This way I can see whether i'm going in reverse or forward over obstacles, etc when the head lights are not illuminating the ground where I need to see.  These Rough COuntry ones are really nice.  The wire harness is completly plug and play, even with a relay and switch.  all the connectors for the lights have quick connectors that are threaded , and seal with o rings.  Very nicely done.  THey are flat with round 3 LED flood lights in them.  only come in clear, which is what I wanted.  THey even have rubber mounting pads that allow either flat mount or curved mount, like if you were installing behind a rock rail or something like that.

My purpose like I said is to see what lurks in the dark.  I was thinking of maybe finding a way to hook up so that I can either switch the on when I need them, or have them also come on when the door opens, like a serious courtesy light.

Here is the link to the lights that I got.
