Winter Tire Setups

I am thinking about a set of winter tires for my 2016 Sierra 2500HD. I live in Saskatchewan so its extreme cold, snow and ice. Im tired of sliding around on crappy tires. I need something safe for family.

What is everyone using?

I’m in Ontario and I just bought a set of BF Goodrich KO2’s.    Never drove them in the snow with my 2500 Duramax but I had them in a Jeep Cherokee and they worked as good as any “winter” tire I’ve tried in the past; Michelin X-Ice and Hankook I-Pike

Up in Alaska here and I run BFGoodrich All Terrain KO2s as well. No issues and I'm very happy with their performance year round.

blizzak w965, now they have a newer version called the lt.  i disagree completely that an AT tire can compete with a dedicated snow tire.  The difference in compounds and siping is significant.

I have been using Good Year  Duratracs for ten years. They may not be as good as a dedicated snow tire I don't know as I have never had those but they seem to work pretty good and I don't have to switch them over twice a year. Pretty much the same as the KO2's mentioned.

I bought a lightly used set of Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT LT load range E.  They are studable.  Deep tread, soft rubber.  Noise levels were near the same as my Yokohama G015 all terrains.  Last winter was my first with them.  They worked fine, though I'll admit, last winter in southern Ontario was not particularly trecherous.  Heck, I did not even bother to get my ABS fixed, and I did not miss it.  I guess the solid traction of the tires helped the cause.

My previous set was Michelin X-Ice.  They were fine too.  They were less aggressive, and handled a bit more like an all season tire when the roads were dry.

Honestly, any winter tire, is better than an all terrain or all season tire for winter driving.

Hi Saskquatch I am in Sask. as well I run Bridgestone Blizzaks on my 1500 I find the wear down really quickly. I think if I had it to do over I would try the Michelin X-Ice we have them on the wifes crv and they still look like new after 3 years.Granted they are two totally different types of vehicles.

Ive had Duratracs and BFG All terrains in the past on my half ton and both were good in deep snow, but awful on icy roads and intersections. This is why I want to try a dedicated winter tire. I have read lots of positive things about the Nokian Hakka however you spell it.... They would be my winter choice.

All I ever used in the interior of Alaska for 10 years was BFG AT's.  I am using BFG AT KO2's now year round.  the KO2's are light years ahead of the original BFG AT's.   Great for general snow, pushing snow, and off road on the property.    Great in rain.  I have to deal with several miles of gravel roads just to get from my house to the nearest highway.  Mud, snow drifts, all of it, the KO2's do a great job.  I am sure there is probably another good tire and brand out there, but when something works well, why screw with success.

If you're not wanting to run a dedicated winter tire, then a good all terrain with the 3 peak snowflake rating (Cooper AT3, Falken AT3, BFG AT KO2, General Grabber ATX, etc.) would be second best.

I would like to try the ko2 just to see the difference. I had poor wear life with the originals.

I didn’t see cooper M+S mentioned. They are the best I’ve had on an HD and that I’ve plowed with as well. Of the others listed here I have only used the dura tracks which were decent. I have used many different snows on cars and would agree a dedicated winter tire have always given the best overall performance especially on icy conditions.

Try an All-weather in place of an All-season. Like the K02 or G015 or AT/W, I am still undecided.  If the LTX M/S had the mountain snowflake I would get it.

I'll throw some incite in here. I live in eastern Canada so we get lots of snow and freezing rain. i have a set of steelies that i keep a dedicated winter on. Also i always had weight in the box. I used train ties cut down to fit perfect in the box. The first 3 winters i ran the Cooper M+S and they were excellent. I only switched to the duratrac because i didn't like the look of the small cooper size and they were decent in the snow. This will be my second winter on the duratracs and so far so good. The only change i would have done now is stud them.

The cooper was also studdable but definitely didn't need it. The duratrac is excellent everywhere but glare ice so when i go to replace these i will either try something new or throw a set of studded duratracs on this time. All though cooper makes that new AT/W that looks interesting, and i have seen a few other newer winters out there that look promising.

    • New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?
    • So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.
    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
