Hard Wiring A Dash Cam

Hello and Merry Xmas.

Going to add a dash cam to 2018 sierra 1500. Was looking to use an add-a-circuit kit to be able to have the always-on dash cam parking sensor working.

 

Does anyone have a suggestion as to which always on fuse slot is the best one to use for this?

I can't help with which fuse is the best to tap into for constant 12vdc but it isn't to hard to just get a test light and start testing circuits until you find one that is always on.  Dash cams don't take much juice.  Just make sure you put a fuse inline to it.

Yes either do the testing or keep searching, i know someone posted pics and said which fuse location to use in the many dash cam posts you will find here.

I think I read at one time either for a silverado/sierra or possibly another vehicle but they did the add a circuit to the front driver seat

At the foot box there is positive,rap,and ground all in there. Please fuse it and your all set. I wire a relay of the rap wire from there as I have a lot of accessory items.

Next question..any tips on getting those fuse box side panels off without snapping the thing in half? Work it loose from the bottom 1st? I am hesitant to just grab hold and yank it out as it seems very tightly attached to dash.

Every single fuse in the passenger side fuse box is constant 12V only the drivers side have switched(rpo) power.

 

Here's a video of me removing my fuse cover.  First time it is a bit tight but it will cut into your skin before the panel brakes.

 

 

What dashcam is it that requires constant 12V for parking mode?  That doesn't sound like parking mode to me but more like continuous recording.

My bad. Yes continuous recording while parked to record motion etc. 

On the passenger side panel are there any particular fuses i should use or should avoid using?

I was looking for switched 12V when i was in there so I didn't actually end up hooking anything up to that side.  But from the owners manual these seem like probably the best ones.  

 

9 Rear seat entertainment

10 Cargo lamp

18 Radio  (I probably wouldn't use this one.  I know on the cavliers it would trip the anti theft and require a dealership visit to unlock no idea if these trucks do that.)

35 AC inverter

36 Amplifier

 

Everything else is not the right fuse type or goes to body control modules.  You need a micro-2 fuse add-a-circuit.  I had to order mine online, none of the local stores carried them.  Seen lots of people pick up the mini fuse by mistake they look very similar.

 

Hope your using a hardwire kit that has low voltage cut off.  Also seen lots of people just hook it up to straight battery and leave it run 24/7 and come to find a dead battery.  I personally like the dash cams that have a internal battery that it runs off while the vehicle is off and charges up while driving.  What dash cam are you using?

I picked up a vantrue t2. It has a low voltage cut off or so it says. It came with an OBD port power plug in the box, but that seemed like a sketchy idea.

 

Got the whole setup-camera, sd card, clip-on mount and wiring kit on amazon. Didn't cost too much for a first try with this tech. See how it works out.
