My latest update, spent the day at the dealers for repair of DIC reading "Service Side Detection System".....

After most of the day waiting, I was told that the dealers diagnostic equipment indicated that they must re-flash my computers sensors system....They told me they tried to do this and kept getting an error message from my trucks computer that said the re flash could not be done....they said they called GM Dealer Service engineers for help.........They were told to order new mirror and other system sensors...... So now waiting on these parts to come in, and with the recent UAW strike, most parts orders have been going on Back Order, so we will see what happens after they come in and get installed.....

I hope it works out with you.  I thought the UAW strike was over?

It is but the backlog of part orders has overwhelmed the GM system.

Purchased 2019 Sierra Denali 1500 6.2L 4WD very late December 2019 from out of state GMC dealership in Washington. I live in Montana. I previously lived in Washington for 18 years before moving to Montana.  In the past 12 years I have purchased 7 new GMC Sierra 1500 pickups from the Washington GMC dealership. Have had nothing but good purchase and service experiences with the dealership so I trust them. Anyway purchased the new truck on a Saturday when the dealership service department was closed. Had to drive back to Montana that same weekend because I had to work on Monday. The  new Sierra Denali 1500 pickup I was purchasing was my means for getting back to Montana by Monday. While purchasing the truck that Saturday I thoroughly checked out the truck and went through all the functions of the new truck to include the optional Alert 2 package functions (Collision alert, pedestrian alert, lane departure warning, auto high beams, etc), which none of them worked.  Salesman I’ve dealt with many times asked if I could bring it in on Monday to their service dept. to get the Alert 2 package problems fixed.  Advised him I could not as I needed to be back in Montana on Monday and that the truck was my means to travel back to Montana (additionally if I did not purchase truck that weekend I would lose out on $15,000 in rebates which end by Jan 2nd).  So he and I determined taking truck to a local Montana GMC service center for warranty service on the non-working Alert 2 Package functions would be next best course of action (other than not purchasing truck). So bought truck and went back to Montana.

Contacted local Montana GMC service center (30 miles from where I live) and made arrangements to get the truck to them. Only down side was they could not get the truck in for service for minimum of 3 weeks.  Got it to them more than 10 days ago.  They took a day to diagnosed the truck and said they captured several fault codes they did not know how to fix (said these trucks are getting more complex and complicated to fix all the time). Said they reached out to GMC engineers to get guidance on how to fix the truck and would have to wait until GMC engineers got back to them with a fix.  Told me to take the truck, that they would contact me and re-schedule an appointment to service the truck when they heard back from the GMC engineers on a fix.  In the mean time since then, my touch screen intermittently goes from functioning to displaying a blue screen that advises to service rear camera system.  Contacted the local Montana GMC service department by phone who advised (this is 7 working days after they reached out to the GMC engineers)  they have not yet heard back from the GMC engineers.  Said they would add the new blue screen problem to their list of issues to discuss with the GMC engineers.  It has now been 9 working days and I not heard a single word from the local GMC service department about fixing the truck.  Truly disappointed in GMC.  At minimum reach out to me every so often to let me know that the  issues are being worked rather than me having to call and wonder if anything is actually be done or whether I am floating around at the bottom of your vehicles that need to be fixed list and we will get to you when we get to you.  During the initial service session the Montana GMC service tech advised that the captured fault codes could possibly be liked to a faulty processor and that they did not know how to fix it. Said the truck had captured numerous fault codes and that truck had numerous issues. Not a confidence builder.  Getting tired of lack of communication and waiting on anticipated repair of my brand new GMC pick.  Losing confidence in the reliability of the truck.  Hope the issues can be repaired correctly and in a timely manner.

Concerning your Tech Package, it sounds like the Front Camera is not calibrated correctly. Maybe the vehicle received a few TSBs and Recalls in Dec. One of those software updates caused problems with the front camera. The camera would need to be place in Re Learn mode for it to calibrate to allow those safety features to work. Your rear camera situation could be several things, needs a software update, video processor module might be bad, bad coax camera cable. Check your rear slider window for water leaks around the corners [Plastic frame cracking or stoplight fixture mounting holes not sealed] or check the appearance of your headliner to see if it is discolored due to leakage. Some of that water [if it is leaking] may have leaked upon the video processor which is mounted behind the back seat. Check this website which if you provide the VIN will provide the software calibrations for the vehicle modules. IE if I look at the Brake Module, it will tell me that one of the recalls was performed ie N192268090. Ask the dealership if all the TSBs and Recalls have been performed on your vehicle.

Rocz3cqg. Thank you for your response and very helpful suggestions.  I will bring them up with the Montana GMC service techs. Hopefully it will give them some guidance in which direction to proceed for both Tech Package and rear camera system. You are correct that updates and/or TSBs were performed on the truck just prior to my purchasing. I had asked salesman to make sure that any outstanding updates were completed prior to me picking up/purchasing the truck. Salesman advised me their service department had completed the updates, both he and I unaware that those  updates resulted in systems functioning issues/problems.  I am going to go out and check rear window surround for cracks and leaks.  Again Thanks for the guidance and suggestions. When The faulty issues are identified and fixed I will post the corrective actions the service techs completed to get things correct and working.

Thanks, your correct, the strike is over, unfortunately it has created a back log on parts availability, good luck with your local dealer, you can request the phone number From them for GM Customer Relations, give them a call and get them involved in your problems and they will help you with both your problems and with your servicing dealer

Thanks Theweavman for the heads up to contact GM Customers Relations.  Hopefully they can help make things responsive to my situation.  I contacted the Montana GMC service shop yesterday. Spoke with a different service Tech who acknowledged and recalled the initial diagnosing of faults for my truck, now coming up on two weeks ago. The Tech advised he was off of work and out of town for the past 5 days so he would have to check back into his emails to see if GMC engineers responded to their request for help/guidance fixing my truck.  Said he would call me back after he checked emails. Never heard back from him.  Looks like I am going to have to make the 60 mile round trip to see them in person to see if I can get some movement out of them or instill some interest in them trying to fix the truck. Guess I was right to be a bit apprehensive as to how repairs would proceed given the first thing they asked me when I contacted them about the problems was if I purchased the truck through their dealership.  I guess I’ll just have to see where this goes.  Very frustrated with GM and this brand new truck that doesn’t work as advertised.

Sorry your having these problems with your brand new truck, the dealer I use for warranty work is not my selling dealer either, but I have been treated very well By them so far without a mention of where I purchased my truck.... the trucks are great, hang in there, you will be happy once they figure out your problems that you should never of had.....start contacting your dealers service manager, then the general manager, you might even need to look up county or city records to find who the dealership owner is and contact him, and call GM Customer Service for sure, and get them involved, If you have a GMC, you can always take it to a Chevy dealer or vice versa, too! ..... Don’t give up, also remember there is a lemon law, if they don’t fix it...... good luck

Thanks all for the helpful suggestions and contact info.  Will follow up with all.  Got in contact with Montana GMC service tech today.  They arranged to have me drop off the truck to them for warranty work service. Unfortunately have to wait a week to get it into them. Said they would have truck a minimum of two days and would arrange for a loaner vehicle.  In mean time truck problems seem to be getting progressively worse.  In addition to Safety 2 Alert systems not working and backup camera system not working (i.e. blue screen with service rear camera system warning,  now when I brake and stop (on street at intersection with nothing around, in parking lot with nothing around) the front center parking sensor warning indicator goes all the way to red, driver’s seat vibrates and center screen goes blue.  Happens about 50% of the time I stop.  There is nothing obscuring or near the front parking sensors.  Hopefully they get it all figured out.

I’m glad they are going to have you bring the truck in for warranty repairs. Hopefully they will get it resolved for you, almost sounds like a bad electrical connection or even possibly a moisture related issue, but these systems have become so complex and inter related its hard to know, but once fixed, I think you will be a happy camper with your truck

Finally was able to get my truck into the Montana GMC Service Department today.  Got a loaner vehicle (Chevy Spark). In addition to Safety 2 Alert systems not working they are also going to look at the service rear camera system issues and front parking sensor/blue screen coming on at same time issues.  Told me they anticipated having the truck for several days at minimum.  Said 13 safety recalls had been performed (and recorded) on the truck prior to my purchasing the truck brand new.  Hoping they have fixes for all the issues.

    • hello I recently bought a 2012 gmc 1500 with a 5.3 and have a AFM disabler on it I'm interested in doing a cam but I'm worried if I remove the AFM system I will fail smog does anyone have info if they are able to detect that or a work around to it (not talking about hot smogging) please let me know thank you
    • Update. I started chasing down my symptoms. Started first with pulling valve covers and looked at everything. Everything looked good and couldn't hear or feel anything different. Then a compression test. 240 psi or really close on each cylinder. I was worried I was a tooth off of timing. Not bad for an engine with 173,000. Granted I did put new heads on. I sprayed water around the injector area to see if I could hear a change. Nothing. I hooked up my new hp tuner which I should have done in the first place but I don't really know what I'm looking at just yet but am learning. I noticed the fuel trims were way off so that told me I have to have either a bad injector or exhaust leak. New injectors, so I did the shop vac on blower and in the tail pipe. Sprayed soapy water and found the exhaust flange on the drivers side was leaking. I didn't think it would be that considereding I pulled the heads and left the manifolds attached. I did have the transmission replaced not long ago. They must have not seated them properly but I guess I didn't notice. I put in new gaskets on both sides. Which by the way isn't a bad job but I had a hard time getting them to seal right. Took two attempts. Reset the fuel trims and the ticking is gone, engine runs smooth and acceleration has improved. Got to feel the real difference with that stage 1 cam. It's not that big of a difference but it does add a little more. It feels like how the truck should have been from the factory.
    • Can it still be Assembled I?    Stribeck says that we need a certain amount of viscosity under conditions of load and velocity to prevent two surfaces of a know roughness from tearing each other asunder. And we have marketing trying to tell the masses that those two surfaced require less of that commodity due to more exact limits being placed on the same old clearances. We also know that there are limits to how hard something can before it becomes to brittle to be viable and to smooth to 'wet' the surface and that both of those conditions have been known and met since about the Second World War.    That viscosity value shook out at 10 centistokes at 212 F just under a hundred years ago.  Give this a look: [Anton Parr]     What is advertised is the Kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) or that which has been density adjusted but the value we are after is the dynamic viscosity (mPa.s) or true viscosity. You can see that this number is dependent on density thus base stock and temperature. You can also see that an SAE 30 doesn't reach that value in this example. However an SAE 30 that is at the upper end of the SAE 30 range; 12.5 cSt (mm2/s), might. 12.5 * .83 = 10.375 (mm2/s). If you could find an SAE 30 at the upper end these days.   Then there is the complication of viscosity modifiers or VII or VM, whatever you wish to call them. Polymers added to very thin base oils, perhaps 3 to 6 cP oils, that will meet the SAE *W30 spec at 'tested' shear rates and 100 C/212F  target temperature. So a polymer fortified base that is a fraction of the 10 cP requirement Stribeck insist upon.   This could be all well and good if those polymers didn't have two very problematic 'features'. They shear or loose viscosity both 1.) permanently and 2.) temporality. And they do both omitted in the advertised data with the distinct  purpose of deceiving the consumer of the actual operating state of the fluid. I've shown the example of Warren Oils COSTCO 10.91 cSt 5W30 formuation several times where the 100 C HTHS value is 6.9 cP!! That's the temporary shear down and with and SSI or shear stability index of 9.4 cSt. Note the intentional deception in using mixed units?    After a short while that 9.4 cSt oil has a viscosity corrected dynamic value of 7.8 cP. But as the SSI is still within the range of an SAE *W30 whose lower value is 9.3 cSt.    This allows them to continue to call this SAE 16 weight oil a 30 weight, the cake, and still meet the API requirements for fuel efficiency IMPROVEMENT mandated by the EPA. The eating of the cake. By the time you've worn out your motor doing the responsible thing by adhering to the warranty requirements, (the stick), you get deprived of the carrot, wear control. So sad, to bad.   So what can be done? Do I need actually say? [Anton Parr]       Even this must be monitored if the oil is on the low side and the VII an organic or you opt for a 0W40 with an even lighter base oil and more / higher MW VII. (Note the lower density of the 40 weight versus the SAE 30 mono-weight?)    There is another workaround. Temperature. An SAE *W30 run at a bulk temperature of between 180 and 195 F.    Being the belt and suspenders sort I am I do both. Run it cook and run it heavy.    In Part II I'll work the AW package.
    • So, do I go elbow-deep on this thing or list it for sale and play dumb? Seems to "runs good."   I'm about $1200 away from having: -a rebuilt injector ($300) -a new cat ($250) -a new cat back exhaust (OE style) ($300) -a new AC compressor ($200) -AC refrigerant charge ($150)   In theory, this should rectify the obvious detracting issues from its value and operability. Cold AC with a non-squeaking AC pulley both sounds and feels good. An exhaust that isn't cut/hacked in 17 different places and doesn't vibrate on a crossmember would make it sound and feel less janky. A working cat would help the stink, and will save the earth, but *if and only if* the fuel system is working properly, which would also address the intermittent "rich" CEL.   Heard a good one... CEL for "Rich condition" means you haven't spent enough money on the truck lately, and it's letting you know.   Rebuilding the injector would seem to be the most important part. Replacing the cat would be secondary. I don't think mine is plugged or overly restricted, but it might be a little restricted? I have no good way to tell other than seat of the pants feel. I hate the smell.   The current theory is I have a rich idle problem: A bad fuel pressure regulator, or a leaking injector(s) being the highest probabilities. I already replaced the FPR but that doesn't mean its replacement isn't also bad. It was a new part from Dorman, but the packaging looked like it had been sitting on a shelf for 20 years.   This is the (single) upstream O2 sensor shown at idle. I'm getting a lot of "rich" it seems. Sometimes it stays high like that and doesn't drop down. That makes me think it's processing injector leaks or a partially stuck open injector.     Other times it looks like this. Nice oscillations between rich and lean, which is what I think it should be. Under load and at speed, the oscillations are nice and tight and uniform looking, high and low.     Fuel trims suggest the PCM is compensating pretty hard at idle to pull fuel out. But it's not enough to trip a CEL. Something about slowing to a stop: brake vaccum booster, EGR, or the EVAP purge is delayed, or there's pooled fuel in the intake again that's draining into a cylinder is enough to set the CEL. Of course, in two days of driving, it hasn't set. I was hoping to actually look at the freeze-frame data when it sets. IAT is high because it's idling on an 83 degree day here.
