That press release deals with purchasing a couple more years from the standard 3 year / 36K mile warranty when the vehicle is purchased new...

 

But like lapoolboy states above, you can purchase an extended warranty through your dealer (or any GM Dealer) for your vehicle. The price jumps considerably if you are over 36K miles, or past 3 years after taking delivery, or both.

 

I just purchased GM's Platinum Coverage Plan for another 7 year / 100K for my truck as I was getting close to the 3 year / 36K, but was under both. The better news of waiting to purchase when I did as opposed to when buying the vehicle new...

My new extended warranty is good until 134,000 miles and /or Nov 2025...

The extended warranty starts from the moment it was purchased. If I purchased this same warranty when I bought the truck, it would end at 100K miles and / or early 2023 as it runs concurrently with the factory warranty...even though it can't be used.

 

Don't hesitate to negotiate prices with multiple dealers. They want to sell you this product as it is typically a money maker for them, not us. So wheel and deal just like we do on the purchase price of the vehicle...

@EJCarter, you sure it starts from the purchase of the warranty? Not the actual miles on the truck? From every extended warranty I've ever seen, they started after the factory ends and go until stated mileage being purchased. Are you also sure that it is a GM extended warranty and not from someone else the dealer sponsors? 

 

I read the article OP linked also and have been considering extending my "OEM GM" warranty as well. I don't like dealing with other brands that dealers support. Did that once and the dealer went out of business, got no coverage, refund or otherwise after.

Just to be clear, the Op's question pertained to a warranty that can be had with a new car purchase only. And extends the bumper to bumper warranty. Yes OE extended warranties are available. Normal GM extended warranties are not bumper to bumper. Don't let a salesman tell you otherwise. They do cover the vast majorities of failures but not everything like a true bumper to bumper warranty. I lived for 36 years. As a tech I hated GM extended warranties. But it's the only one I would recommend because of what they do cover. Now having said that, GM has recently changed thier extended warranties. Gone is the old GMPP. Now it is called the Chevrolet Protection Plan and it is  administered by an outside company similar to aftermarket warranty companies.

m3n: I was able to get mine for $2800 with $100 deductible. I believe it was approx $3500 for the $0 deductible plan (after looking at my contract, it's actually for 84 months / 100K miles, not 72 months). Keep in mind, there are many plans available (months / miles) a different price points to best suit your needs... 

 

Batman900: Yes, mine is a GM warranty. I am also aware of dealerships offering third party warranty's and, I agree, definitely wanted to stay away from those. Mine is the General Motors Extended Protection Plan (GMEPP) Platinum. Now this still isn't as good as the factory warranty, but covers almost everything. They also offered a Silver Plan that was a little cheaper, but covers much less. These GM Warranty's are good at any GM dealership, so you are covered while traveling...

Regarding the warranty time frame vs. the factory warranty...I'm only going by what I was told by multiple dealers, which all stated the same thing. Whatever your current mileage is they punch into the computer. It computes what you added. If you have 23 miles on the vehicle when purchased new, and decide to buy a GMEPP, they enter the 23 miles and date purchased on the contract...therefore, you are good until 100,023 miles (if purchasing the 100K plan). I purchased my 100K extension at just under 34K miles at my local dealership (they were the cheapest), and my contract states it is good till just under 134,000 miles / Nov 2025. They also confirmed it pays to wait and not purchase these at time of delivery as it "extends" you further. You just have to pay in full for the extended warranty at time of purchase as opposed to adding it to your payment if you purchased it when purchasing the truck.  Again, I'm only going by what I was told by the multiple dealerships I checked prices with...

Oh man I can't tell you how many customers bought a GMPP plan for 60  months 60k miles at purchase. Basically a 2 year warranty for a lot of money.

When I bought both of my 2018's I got the GM extended warranty to 150,000 no time limit. Covers everything even the radio. $100 deductible. $2999.  

So much crap to go wrong I couldn't say no. 

That being said I think you could do an aftermarket warranty for a lot less depending on what is covered. 

Carsheild comes to mind .

I recommend getting out your paperwork and looking over the exclusions now so you aren't disappointed when you eventually try to get something covered. Most warranties are sold as "covering everything", but the salesman fails to explain that anything that just wears out due to normal use is not covered. That's a lot of parts that normally need maintenance. (brakes, tires, belts, filters, fluid......)

 

I find it extremely hard to believe they would warranty the "entire truck" for 150,000 miles, unlimited time, for only $3,000.

 

If you are not exaggerating, you need to tell me how I can get that plan.

 

I regretfully bought an extended warranty from my dealer, even knowing what was all excluded. I wish I put that $2,000 in my bank account instead.

150% markup by the dealer. That is why they are selling the $2999 package for less than $1500 at some dealers. It is the biggest sucker sell except for magic paint protection wax. But hey, I felt so good about buying a quality product that I bought an insurance policy because I might actually be stupid at my choice of vehicles.

Don't be afraid of 3rd party plans. Just pick a reputable company. I have an 'ALLSTATE' warranty, (from Allstate insurance) on one of my cars (2015 Altima).

The A/C compressor replacement last summer paid for the policy I bought.. They were excellent to deal with. No questions asked. The repair was approved in minutes.They paid the Nissan dealer directly. You can bring the vehicle wherever you want. They started at $2000 for the policy. we agreed at $600.   I currently still have 3 years/50K left on it.

I just bought one for my Sierra from the dealer.  Truck had 34k extended additional 125K on bumper to bumper and power train to 159K for $ 3134.00.  This was at Classic GMC in Arlington TX.  Finance Mgr took 1K off retail and told me they make 500 bucks on these and employees get it 400 bucks cheaper and they make 100 bucks on them.  Very straight forward negotiation when I started to ask about their margins on these.

      This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.

      2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.

      Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉

      Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
