TXGREEK Posted February 24, 2019 Posted February 24, 2019 There is no disconnect. The op posted about LT tires to which a non LT tire person (you) posted psi recommendations. Your post became null and void as soon as you said you didn’t have LT tires. I stick by my post as the ops tires are LT 80psi rated. Tire psi is like oil choices. Everybody has an opinion to which I stated mine. Running 40 psi in an 80 psi rated tire is to low IMO. Thanks I’ve had at the least 20 4x4 trucks and SUV’s, always LT tires and always between 35/40psi with excellent wear and ride quality. I’ve got over 5K on my 34” LT tires always running 37-40 psi (no towing or hauling) excellent tire wear. Maybe higher quality LT tires differ from cheaper made LT tires, I wouldn’t know cause with my OCD on getting what you paid. Sent from above
TXGREEK Posted February 24, 2019 Posted February 24, 2019 This is the only right answer if your after maximum tread life. And if you need more scientific instruments, they sell neon colored chalk at your local kids science store, think it’s called “driveway chalk”, made in the USA [emoji631] [emoji6]Sent from above

Lots of fun reading and opinions on tires! "P" rated tires provide ample durability for 1/2 ton use and vary in design and quality. Did you find the reason behind your inordinate number of flats?

The first was a nail within the first 300 miles on the truck, dealer was nice enough to plug for me no questions. The second was a 2 inch metal roofing screw, replaced with a new stock tire since the screw was in the outer edge of the tread and only 5000 miles at the time. The third was my fault, clipped a corner cement wall buried under snow while pulling into a parking spot before a hockey game.

I'll start there and perform the chalk test as a sanity check.

The LT walls are much more stiffer than P rated tires. Do update us. Sent from above

I asked the question because your bad luck sounds like my first couple of months with my new '09 Sierra. It came from the factory with Firestone TransForce LT tires. A fast food drive thru curb took out my sidewall!
TXGREEK Posted February 24, 2019 Posted February 24, 2019 It just goes to prove, not all LT’s are equal. Higher quality and top priced AT’s, Hybrids and MT’s are much more forgiving than standard passenger tire sidewalls which are designed to run on rocky terrain while on low psi. It’s never failed, I’ve never had a Michelin tire, whether more highway all season oriented tire, high performance or AT2’s without somehow attracting nail/screws and yet not once with my BFG’s or Nitto Ridge Grapplers. My Nitto’s are much more durable than my BFG’s were. Sent from above
TXGREEK Posted February 24, 2019 Posted February 24, 2019 First one is Michelin All Terrain Second is Nitto Ridge Grapplers Third is BFG KO2’s Last is the BFG MTAll these tires are LT’s, bet you can pick out the one that’s more vulnerable to punctures, especially sidewall damage Sent from above
btj_z71 Posted February 24, 2019 Posted February 24, 2019 Falken Wildpeak AT3W is the best AT tire. I have really enjoyed my set. Considering I am a spirited driver on and off road, they are wearing very well for being at 36k-37k.Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk

I replaced these Firestone's with Michelin LTX MS2's LT rated. Nice ride and no more flats. I switched out my factory tires on my '15 with the P rated version of these Michelins. The load range of the P rated tire far exceeds any potential load a 1/2 ton can carry. Great service from a significantly lighter tire! I ran 40 psi on the LT and the same on the P rated tires.
flyingfool Posted February 24, 2019 Posted February 24, 2019 i run 30 psi up front , really softens the ride, after 20 minutes driving the road/brake heat increases the pressure another 5-7psi
