Why are some Sierra 1500's built in Mexico and some in IN?

My 2007 TX Edition LTCC was built in Mexico. The best vehicle I’ve ever owned. Probably didn’t even put $750 into it outside routine maintenance.

My 2019 RST was built in Indiana. So far (2300 miles), it seems solid, too.

My dad's US 2016 has bad fuel injectors... my MX 2017 had a bad A/C unit.  I think it's more luck of the draw.

One thing I did notice, when I was at the dealership I was trying to decide between two trucks, one was US the other MX.  On the US truck, I noticed the panel gaps between the hood and fender were way off left to right, like 3 times wider on one side.  That's pretty disappointing the US built truck would be sloppy like that.  I ended up buying the MX one, no panel gap issues.  That's not why I picked it though, had more to do with color and options.

I know there are stereotypes against Mexican quality, but I've done a lot of business in Mexico, primarily in the software and ag industries.  There are a lot of very smart people down there doing great work.  Surprisingly, in ag (fertilizer manufacturing and distribution specifically) their regulations are a lot more stringent and properly enforced than ours, at least in my experience.  So maybe those stereotypes are just outdated, or maybe they are based on people coming up here, who are primarily uneducated, at least the first generation.  Still hard workers though.

I ended up getting an AT4 built in MEX.  I couldn't see any difference between MEX & IN and it was the one I wanted.  My 18 was MEX truck and it was a good truck.  I don't think there is any quality difference, just luck.  Look it over and ride the heck out of it before your buy.

I’m one of those that will pay a little more when possible to buy Products made in my home country. Companies foreign or domestic building in selling countries is smart business. I’m not in favor of buying products from seemingly hostile countries to make them stronger to hurt us. I hope that open minded people are taking notice in just how close we were to a tipping point. While we still have the buying power to balance things out before it’s too late. Great countries can only help the less fortunate as long as we stay economically strong and keep our own people working. Buy North America first when possible.

I'd know that, we're Mexicans. The illegal immigrants who come to the U.S. are rarely from Mexico City or Monterrey, both very advanced cities. Usually, they're from the southern parts of Mexico, largely rural and uneducated, much like their Central American counterparts.

The stereotypes against Mexican quality... I recall an article back in 1990 when VW looked into that and concluded the Mexican-built Rabbit and the American-built Rabbit were similar in terms of quality, although both versions were a bit lower in reliability than the German version but the German model was already very different from the other two (round vs. square headlights, more plush interior for North America, etc.).

My 2014 Silverado Z71 crew cab was built in May of 2013 and was assembled in Mexico.  The first six months it was at the dealer a lot.  Driver seat issues, dash rattling, GM recalls etc.  I love the truck but when and if I ever sell or trade it in, my next crew cab Silverado will be born in my hometown of Ft Wayne Indiana.

I personally won't buy one from Mexico, I will keep my fellow Americans working and bought mine that was made in the USA. Love my 20 SLT Sierra Crew cab.

My 2020 AT4 came from Indiana, because of the CarbonPro.  Only Ft Wayne can produce the CarbonPro because the company that makes the beds for GM is local.

Silao built here too.  Every GM truck I've owned since 2011 have been Mexican assembled.  No problems to speak of with any of the vehicles, so as you say................................GRACIAS AMIGOS!!!
