Why are some Sierra 1500's built in Mexico and some in IN?

After looking at window stickers on the lot I've noticed that some Sierra 1500's are built in Mexico while some others are built in IN.  Why?  I've also noticed that Denali's seem to be mostly built in IN and the SLT's seem to be mostly built in Mexico but not all. Just curious.

Because GM has two truck plants to fill demand.. Easy way to tell is the first number of the VIN. Actually 3 if you count the one building 19 Limiteds

 

1= US

3= MX

There's also a big market for the Silverado 1500 in Mexico.. called the Cheyenne. Drug cartels like them a lot.

Is it based on Cab size? I thought all the CC's were Mexican and all the double's were from IN/MI.

This isn't the case when it comes to 2019 T1 platform trucks.

Crew Cabs are built in Indiana also.

all i know is my last one was built in IN and i put 260,000 toruble free miles on it, this 2018 built in MX has been in the shop twice in 20,000 miles. my next one will be from IN

My 06 was built in MX and it was a good truck.

My 14 was built in IN and was solid without issues

My 19 was built in IN and so far so good at 6400 miles.

I don’t know that it matters much as far as quality or likeliness of issues

Not so much anymore with T1.  Before Mexico went back online for T1 which was only a couple of months ago, double and crews rolled from Fort Wayne.  Mexico online now, they handle crew and regular cab, while Fort Wayne handles crew and double.  Flint will do majority if not all the HD production.

If I had a choice when I bought mine I would certainly have preferred as US born truck. But my mexican baby has not had any problems that I would attribute to assembly, so I guess its not a big deal.

Any quality difference?  My 2018 is a Mexican truck (it's been fine, 21k) but I'd prefer my soon to be 2019 purchase to be an Merican truck!  It seems like all of the SLT PPP trucks in my area are MEX built.

It is easy to tell by the VIN. If you want an American built truck only buy trucks with a VIN starting in 1

The Fort Wayne assembled trucks usually have a Fort Wayne Indiana sticker on the door.

Now GM just needs to tap into that Islamic terrorist market and take business away from Toyota. lol
