Transmission Temps - how hot is too hot?

I get amused when people knock the dealer or quick change oil services. The one I used for my older cars is family owned. Where I take my Acura has glass where you can watch. You can also check online for information about reliability. These people do more oil changes in a week than most do it yourselfers do in a lifetime.

Let's translate for you. You tow putting it on the severe service schedule or 45K service intervals. diyer2 is saying no matter who should have done the work, it wasn't done, thus the situation is self inflicted. Ergo you might not be in this situation had it been done.

Agreed. There is no Elfin Magic and "SAE Certification" says he paid to train but says little about his actual skill set and more importantly it says zero about his attitude or willingness for excellence.

I understand where your coming from, there are some fantastic techs out there, but I believe it extends a little further than the mechanic, they are often times working under the dictatorship of franchise management, [negative personal experience] - another topic for another day

Simply put.

IMO

Keeping a vehicle in good condition to me means maintaining a vehicle to keep it like new.

I listen and pay attention to all my vehicles and power equipment and they all have their own language. I know before there is a problem regularly.

I maintain them well so I'm not having problems on the road.

I can't remember the last time I had a mechanical problem with a vehicle while commuting or traveling and I owned a motor home for years.

Try going to Mexico with a poorly maintained motor home and having mechanical problems. Felt sorry for the RVers in this situation.

Every vehicle I have owned when it was sold was in top shape. I couldn't sell a vehicle to someone knowing it is a ticking time bomb.

When I sell them they are high mileage so they are appealing to people that have limited budgets and they probably don't have the money to fix things.

I try to treat people the way I like to be treated.

Not all automatic transmission fluid is built the same. Just like any other product you buy, most are built for profit at a certain price or to meet a low bid. Some use cheaper synthetic base stocks and put in less additives or less costly additives because the are selling to a price point.

If the dealership did a bg trans flush, there might be a warranty available from bg. I thought it was $1k or $2k, but you might be over the maintenance intervals to qualify

Does jiffy lube have the ability to flush the trans?

I thought it had to be done at the dealer. Because you obviously can’t flush the trans without the trans thermostat being open. I was the impression the dealer had a special way of bypassing it but other facilities did not.

might have changed over the years though

Here is my truck the other day. 95 outside temp running about 50 mph trans temp even with AC on stayed at 144 all the way home 22 miles. Just FYI

Well said every word. Like listening to my father which dyier2 is a great thing. My observation has been that Dad could sell you a vehicle with 250K on the clock and it would be more trustworthy and run better than the day it was delivered new. I hope my children will be telling that story about me some day.

I managed a Jiffy Lube for a time, never had a car fall into the pits, never had a car leave the bays without oil or an oil filter or any other such incompetence. My store was the one the GM sent all the problems to to get fixed, like stripped plugs and such. My boys and girl were well trained and very good at their jobs.

I was waiting for one you guys to speak up. When working out of town I would use these types of places. They would let me observe. The last thing I wanted to do when at home was change my oil. Sure there’s places you have to be diligent at. That’s true will anything. I can tell you stories about doctors that would have people questioning everything. And you should.

Yeah, people could stand in front of the car and watch the techs work, show them around under the hood and more than a few times I brought people down into the pits to show them the underside of their vehicle for one reason or another.

Many years earlier when I was a kid, Jiffy Lube down the street didn't tighten the oil filter and she almost lost the engine. Luckily, she turned right around and made it back in and all was well. Shortly after that, I turned sixteen and began turning wrenches and nobody changed our oil but my brother and I for the family for many years afterwards.

Twice since being married, my dear wife took our vehicles to have the oil changed when I was sick. Both times these different places over filled the engine with oil.

Good techs, like doctors, don't grow on trees and have to be searched for.
