Roll up Tonneau cover security?

Hey guys,

 

I am a new truck owner and I have been looking at getting a roll up Tonneau cover.

 

For any owners of a roll up, I am wondering if they are significantly less/the same security level as a trifold...

Specifically,  is it possible for someone to just un-velcro the side of the tonneau and take a look inside or take something small without actually puncturing the cover or lowering the tailgate?  

 

I might be underestimating the tension of the cover but it seems like that might be possible. I would like to get some feedback from roll up Tonneau cover owners.  Let me know your thoughts guys.

I am pretty pleased with the security level on my Truxedo Pro15x You could maybe get your arm in there thru the velcro but, you'll not get anything of substantial size out... After having folding covers for about 6 years, I just switched a month ago to the roll up and doubt I'll go away from a roll up anytime soon... I was considering the hard roll up from truxedo but, it was almost 2x the cost of the soft and only had a 3 yr warranty vs. the soft has a lifetime.

I’ve owned both, the trifold and the RollNLock, hands down, the RollNLock blows away the trifold competition. All the trifold covers utilize plastic in their clips which is garbage for a locking mechanism. The trifold also blocks your rear view when fully opened.
The RollNLock has aluminum plates connected to each other on rollers with steel locking mechanisms and not only lock onto the bed but to the tailgate as well which is a plus! I love my RollNLock and will always buy one with every new truck.

i got my first roll up cover in 1997 for my '89 chevy truck.  i still own that truck and i have never lost anything out of the box (and the tailgate doesn't even lock).

 

i got my '14 silverado in 2016 and immediately put a roll up cover on it (truxedo) and have had no problems at all

I also had roll n lock but it's hard to justify its price. The one I bought my truck with is just like roll n lock but it rolls up on top of itself instead of in a box. Reinforced security and no one can get in with the locking tail gate. Stand by for pictures

I have a truxedo lopro. I agree that you might be able to jam your arm in there by pulling up the Velcro, but you can't reach very far or pull out anything larger than your forearm. 

 

The biggest benefit to the cover is keeping things out of sight. That prevents people with curious eyes from seeing anything of value. I also don't ever lock my tailagte and have never had anyone tamper with my bed.

I looked at those too but found that they too incorporate plastic surface contact clips in order to lock and WILL wear out or break. In addition incorporates rubber in between the slots which can be cut with a knife, that’s only if someone really wants to take the time to.

Most are nice but, I highly recommend for you to go to a large shop that offers a variety and see for yourself, look at point of contact, take advice but don’t let someone else sell you one that best makes most profit for them. Look at construction and point of contact, you don’t want plastic and rivets in thin aluminum, both wear, break then rips off. You want metal contact points for the highest protection especially while on over night road trips and you don’t feel like taking everything out.

You know, the snaps that lock yours in place, plastic snap in when you roll it to close. Yours is still a nice looking one and I think a great deal if you’re not to worried about someone breaking into it especially if it’s on a Lifted truck lol

I have had Velcro type, roll n lock, and now a retrax pro. I love the retrax, and I should since it was the most expensive. I really thought the Roll N Lock was the best value for the money considering it security and construction. But the thing that will take me back to Retrax is the customer service. I had an issue with mine, bought used, and they offered to replace it at cost and shipped it to me for free. Not only that but they offered to take it from the lesser plastic one to the metal pro version, again me paying the difference. I am sure that I will continue to buy the retrax pro from now on. I keep lawn equipment or golf clubs in the bed of my truck. The security for me is worth what I pay. It’s all about the value you get from the money you spend.

Really didn't understand what you just said. They offered to sell you a new one with your broken one but with free shipping, and they offered you their upgrade for extra $. No discount it anything?

I bought one used. It ended up being damaged and I called customer service. They offered to replace the one I had for their cost of manufacturing. Then offered to upgrade me to the pro, again for their cost, not retail, and I did it! And they shipped it to me, if I remember correctly for no cost.

      Based on what I can tell, yes.   As for updating it, its a mixed bag.  Updates do fix a lot of issues, but occasionally can create some oddities.  They do more good than harm though overall.     Here's what the most current one does and a  V171 Improvements Important: Improvements will vary by model, build configuration, system, and sales region. Not all vehicles have all features. OnStar and Wi-Fi may not work after remote start CarPlay may not automatically reconnect Part of the Driver Attention messaging screen may be in English even though the language is set to something else XM may not work After a dead 12V the radio may set to Arabic at each startup Bluetooth contacts might not be able to sync with the vehicle During an OTA the 12V battery may drain Customer might see a screen telling them to return to the dealer After changing the Wi-Fi SSID or password a device may not disconnect If a device is connected on the 2.4Ghz band, nothing will connect to the 5Ghz one, which could show as slow Wi-Fi speeds Customers might have noticed Wi-Fi dropping in certain areas and reconnecting later Customer might see the top of the screen blinking during Android Auto Android Auto may not connect CarPlay audio might momentarily cut out The "Add Phone" button may be grayed out The radio may not start up   V167 Most Notable Improvements:   Outside Air Temperature is incorrect. -You may see a popup message for Engine Shift. When downloading contacts, there is a progress bar and circles on the Recents page of the cluster. The temperature on the cluster and the display may be different. After receiving and ending a call on the secondary paired phone, the cluster may get stuck on the phone menu. Bluetooth Intermittent Bluetooth connection loss.

      Front End Rattle

      Looking for help troubleshooting a metallic like front end rattle. Figured I’d see if anyone had thoughts before I schedule an appointment with the dealer.   The rattle is fairly loud and occurs primarily when the front driver side wheel hits a bump, even fairly minor road seams. Sometimes does it when the passenger hits a bump but I don’t believe when the rear hits. Rattle still occurs when foot is pressing brake peddle so I think that rules out the caliper rattle I’ve read about. I’ve also checked the running boards and they are tight.   Most noticeable at slow speeds.    Any insight is appreciated.

      We try to make cruise the coast. It’s where our favorite casino is. I only want to spectate. Never took a car. Always had one to take. I belonged to a club once. Even when I used to drag raced. It was during test and tune. Probably because I’m not a night owl, party person.

      Good looking Olds, and TRX!   I haven't been into car shows either. I'm probably not a convert but I did push myself this year to attend a few select events to challenge some assumptions and try to experience car-based social clubs in a different way. I joined up with the local Hagerty group for some cars/coffee events, group drives. A month ago I showed my '94 Camaro I rescued last fall at Radwood. Had a good time, but, there was some sitting around with the car and that's the part of shows I don't enjoy as much. I prefer to be a spectator, walk the show, grab a burger, go home.   Radwood was the only era-limited event, but where it had strict model year limitations, it made it up in variety. Having Jason Camissa there was also a hoot.   Where I see old 50's car shows, doo-wop and winga dinga music stuff fading out, same with "only" vintage muscle clubs, it seems to be the activity-based clubs/events which are gaining strong popularity. Places where all cars and interests come together.
