2016 5.3 Silverado AFM Disable After Lifter Problem

I’m new to the forum, as I just purchased a 2016 5.3 Silverado about a month ago. It currently has 58,000 miles and I had to have 8 AFM Lifters replaced a week ago after hearing a loud knocking noise in V4 mode (covered by warranty thankfully).

I know the topic of disabling AFM has been beat to death, but I did not see any threads with answers to my question.

I plan on purchasing a Range AFM disabler but I want to know if there will be any issues since I have already had problems with AFM lifters.

Thanks in advance.

the range device will lower the chances of another failure

That’s good to know. I just wasn’t sure if it would cause any problems since I already had some.

Got proof or is that just an assumption since AFM is off? Same lifter and hardware are still in there...

OP, pretty much all the threads on AFM disabling and the range device answer your specific question, might want to try looking at those and merging this thread.

Tyler,

I’ve read through most of the threads on AFM disabling and I know of the benefits of disabling AFM. I didn’t see any pertaining to someone disabling AFM after they have already had lifter issues. All of them that I read were related to disabling AFM to stop an issue from happening.

There are permanent disable kits out there in the $700 to $800 range.

Not including labor.

Thanks. Right now I’m looking for something more wallet friendly. I’m hoping I don’t have anymore lifter issues. I mainly want to turn it off because I don’t like the sound when it is in V4 mode.

The issue with the lifters arises when they are collapsed/extended as the engine cycles between V4 and V8. If you stop the cycling, your chances of a failure will go down.

my 2014 when new you couldnt tell when it switched until about 45k , then it started to get a vibration every time it went to v4 mode, i bought a range to disable it and the truck ran fine. i had to take the truck in for a warranty update and they told me i had a lot of miss fire codes on an afm cylinder and they would need more time to find the problem. i told them to just do the warranty work and give it back to me . i put the range back in and i am now 100k miles and no problems

What if it could be solved with a simple valve lash adjustment. Or maybe its just the lifters built with inferior metals and bad tolerances.

I built the LS motor in my 70 corvette. It's got hydraulic roller lifters, no adjustment there. The rockers are torqued to a spec when on the cam base, no adustment. As far as I know, there is no lash to adjust on these.
