Why my freshly changed oil turns black?

My 06 trailblazer ss owners manual stated the oil change light would come on between 12-15K with mobile one. My Camry light starts coming 200 miles before 5K miles. Stays on at 5K. I believe the light is for people who are forgetful now. More of a reminder than an accurate measure. Synthetic oils are known to go longer when tested generally.

LOL, actually due to me being an early bird, the wife is an late bird. We both generally use the Camry, our beater and trip car. The others due to low mileage once a year. Don’t tell Grumpy, I went back to 10K oil changes on the Camry as they recommended. I’ll probably put 150K on it, ( try to anyway) and give it to the next grandkid. Like we did with the Elantra. I’m slowly down sizing, house and cars.

10K.... pfft... amateur.  Running the 25K changes on the 2011 Malibu's 2.4 Ecopoop.  The cars powertrain will outlive the rest of it and I will surpass 200K miles with it before I send it off to the big crusher in the sky.  If this Malibu's life is shortened it will be electrical problems or the useless 6 speed ( however this is a rebuilt and updated version) that send it off early.

I use to. Didn’t have any problems doing it. The only vehicle that goes any mileage is the Camry 20K a year. The rest under 5K. The Camry gets two a year, their synthetic until it’s out of warranty. About two more years. Usually about 90$ with tire rotation.

That’s my thinking.  My first two changes were comp’d by the dealer but now I’m just going to go with every 5K as above.  The two from the dealer got me to 11K so the first one on me will be a little less than 5K, but then I’ll be on track.  Idiot proof.

I’m running the Rotella gas truck 5w-30 and have been pleased with it over the Ow-20 I was running. I plan to stick with it. 

 

I’m not a vendor, I just inform products that have actually made a difference for me as well as others and highly recommend them to others, which is what I joined this forum for, to give and receive first hand experiences. You’re obviously ok with using your oil as is what’s to be obvious and more power to you but I along with others want and expect much much more and it’s scientifically proven the Amsoil is the BEST oil in the market so with all due respect, get over it!

Also at this mileage as well as 7,500 miles you rotate your tires at the same time.  So far I got just about 60k miles out of my Michelin LTX MS2's.

My OCD won’t let me go past 20K miles without swapping my tires for a new set. I usually pick out a single mom with kids at the tire store and donate what the tire store gives me as trade in which is typically no less than $400 per set.

Condition/Concern

Since 2010 all GM vehicles have been equipped with the oil life monitor (OLM) system

The monitor calculates the percent of oil life remaining, based on 3 pathways

The OLM starts its calculation for all pathways after the first 50 miles to account for marshalling and time before sale.  Subsequently, calculations begin immediately after each reset.

 

Recommendation/Instructions

 

Oil Life Monitor Calculation Pathways:

1.      Engine revolutions- Oil life starts with a fixed number of revolutions and will decrease with each revolution.  Cold / hot coolant temp readings have multipliers that reduce engine revolutions pathway quicker depending on how far from the normal oil temperature the vehicle is operating.

Note: If engine coolant temp gets above 260F, engine overheat condition, the oil life will go to 0%.

2.      Mileage from last reset – Starting with MY 2013, the OLM is capped at 7500 miles for all GM powertrains except the Volt.  In perfect conditions a vehicle would reach 7500 miles from the last reset and the oil life left would be 0%.

3.      Time- This pathway is a liner function, a fixed decrease in oil life for a given time after the oil life is reset.  The oil life will drop to 0% after 1 year regardless of the amount of engine revolutions or how many miles since the reset.

Note: The Volt uses a 2 year timer instead of 1 year. It also uses the engine revolution counter. It does not use the mileage pathway to count down.]/quote]

Anyone run some 0W30 Diesel oil through it for a few thousand miles? Diesel oil has detergents in it for the carbon and soot, it will help clean up the sludge in your gas engine. We used to do it lots with the old 350's.

I did once back in the 70s. I removed a six cylinder engine from my 70 Ford P/U, put in a 67 289. The engine was full of sludge but ran well. I ran diesel fuel transmission fluid mix at idle. Followed up with diesel motor oil. It did so well about once a year I would have to drop the oil pan clean the oil pick up screen. Fix the broken shaft from the oil pump to the distributor. The sludge doesn’t disappear it has to go somewhere.

We bought the wife's Terrain with about 20K on the clock. Carfax showed dealer service on schedule. I put it on a diet of Quaker State UD or Mobil 1 and 5K OCI's. It darkened pretty quickly but she drives it hard and so it was rinse and repeat until it got to about 80K and it started using oil. About a 3/4 quart in 5K. We are now on the fourth change using Red Line High Performance and it has quit using oil. Not immediately but over the four changes. Also back to about 3K miles before color becomes noticeable. Again gradually. 

 

It is my belief and experience that most motors that start using oil have an oil ring gumming issue. An unusually quick darkening a precursor. (gas not diesel) They start to stick in the land and can no longer perform their function. Controlling the amount of oil allowed to remain. Almost anything that will remove these deposits without sacrificing long term protection will help if not resolve the issue in an otherwise healthy, well maintained, adult driven motor. 

 

KARNUT used ATF and Diesel. Dad used Kerosene and ATF. Some use Marvel. There are commercial motor flushes. I like to try an oil with a great deal of natural solvency. Mobil 1 use to be on the short list of such oils when it was still a PAO. There might be others but Red Line and AMSOIL are two I know for a fact have a large ester percentage and esters are great cleaners...over time...or...used routinely. 

 

Had my oil consumption just abruptly ended I might have thought it was the lower NOACK number and at times that might also be true.

I have absolutely ZERO oil consumption in my 6.2, only use AMSOIL Signature Series along with Wix XP oil filters every 4K miles.
