Most important thing you can do is introduce the best oil and filter you can afford for the life of the vehicle, everyone including myself will have their own opinion but at the end of the day, are you just getting by with meeting specs or are you wanting more, more protection along with a smoother, happier engine doesn’t come with “meets specs”. You may be like a few of us, standards are “exceeding the specs” for the sole purpose of longevity and that extreme protection between oil changes. Or, you can just get by with factory specs, sorta like tires, not all tires will last as long as others due to the chemical formula and as the saying goes, YOU ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

It is on topic considering this topic is, you know, about oil, and he did consider switching brands with everyone offering their opinion, as you already said.  Also, that site isn't this site so I wouldn't have been looking there for information when I can look here for information specifically related to our engines, not engines in general.  Also also, I already did a "search function" for Schaeffer oil and didn't find enough of what I'd like to hear from other people on this forum, not bobistheoilguy (doesn't mean I won't look, but it wasn't in my repertoire before).

 

But I digress.

On a side note, does anyone have experience with Schaeffer oil?  I can get it in bulk for dirt cheap but have no experience with it.

It’s not Amsoil so chances are you’re engine is gonna blow. I wouldn’t use it

I have to say also about my "5K miles" oil change. I've been following my dashboard "Driver Info Console" Oil Life Remaining as a reference w/o paying close attention to true mileage. Since Chevrolet recommends replacing oil every 7.5K miles, I thought, I was changing oil about 5K miles...or 30% to 40% OIL LIFE REMAINING on the  "Driver Info Console" indicator. How many miles does it take to go from 100% to 0% oil life. According to Chevy, it differs. The compute measures all kinds of indicators such as engine revolution and miles traveled and Engine hours…whatever comes first, as they say. So, in reality, appears to me I've been changing oil every 3K miles or so. From now on, I will log miles and Engine Hours for accuracy.

Do what I do. You have a trip a and a trip b in your DIC. Just reset the trip B every time you do an oil change.  When you get to 5k change your oil and reset.

I used Rotella T6 in my diesels, depending on the stock grade, Rotella is a very good Oil.

Has anyone figured out the 'conditions' that shorten the OLM?  I reset my 'Trip B' at every oil change on both my 2014 and my 2018 and both got to 0% at 7,500 miles regardless of driving conditions.  I regularly pull a 6,500# boat around for several hours in the dead of summer getting to the lake and back home.  I figure if anything is going to shorten the OLM that will, but it never changes.

I’m running the Rotella gas truck 5w-30 and have been pleased with it over the Ow-20 I was running. I plan to stick with it. 

I bought 60K miles tires 5 years ago. It came time for new ones. They wore out too soon all four. I got 160$ back. That covered the difference between cheap tires and expensive tires. So I got more than I paid for.

It wasn't aimed at you, but to head off this thread running off the tracks as most all the oil threads do, as they turn into as pissing match of "my oil is better than your oil".

 

I'll repeat, Schaffer is a high quality oil and you'll have no issue using it in any engine

Same here.  I rest Trip B and when the OLM gets to 0% I'm right at 7,500 miles every time.  No matter how we drive.  Long trips or short 3 mile each way for a month.  Our 2011 Acadia was set at 5,000 miles so when the OLM was at 0% the Trip B on the Acadia was at 5k miles every time.

Oil temperature use to be part of it but anymore...who knows. As someone else said seems to be total revs OR miles OR hours and it seems miles wins 99.94% of the time. I ignore it anymore.

I’ve heard the same story from others many times about their OLM hitting 0% right at 7500 miles, but oddly mine typically hits 7800, and on one interval hit 8000.  Thought it was a fluke the first time.

 As I write this it occurs to me that my odometer may not be accurate.

My 06 trailblazer ss owners manual stated the oil change light would come on between 12-15K with mobile one. My Camry light starts coming 200 miles before 5K miles. Stays on at 5K. I believe the light is for people who are forgetful now. More of a reminder than an accurate measure. Synthetic oils are known to go longer when tested generally.

The other great thing about the 5k I use on my vehicles is that it’s easy to keep track of, no trip odometer needed: 15k, 20k, 25k miles, etc. Idiot proof.
